The greatcft part of them perilled for want of food, or
rather for want of ijnftinft to go in quest of it. Several died
at the foot of the esp Her, where the wind and hail had beat
them from off the leaves. But it wouid be an cafv matter
to provide againllthe firll of these inconveniences, by remo
ving them from one part of the tree to another; an alii dance
which few would require above thrice, during their whole
lives. The second inconvcniency would, indeed, require
more attendance, which, after all, might be of no use, as
probably they receive fome hurt in their fall, it did not ap
pear that the birds, though very numerous in the place where
this experiment was tried, ueilrojcd many of them
These twelve hundred worms yielded five hundred and fif
ty coccons, weighing two pounds and a half Lyons weight,
of fourteen ounces to the pound, and these cccoons produced
about three ounces of the finell silk ever obtained in France:
but one of the cocoons was faulty, and not one of them
double; so that the operati ns requifitc to get the silk from
them was not attended with any wade. This method there
fore, notwithdanding the loss cf woims with which it was
attended, appeared, on calculation, more advantageous, in
regard both to the quantity and quality of the iilk obtained
by it, than that, ulually followed, of feeding them within
doors.
A PRAYER. By M. Je Voltaire,
Tnute jur la Toil ranee, chap, xxrti.
NOT unto men, lut unto d.ee, the God of all beings,
of all worlds, and of aJI ages, do 1 address mvfclf;
if feeble creatures, 101 l in thy imu.anfity, and imperceptible
to the red of the uoivcrfe, may presume to ask of thee any
thing; of the? who halt given all; of thee u hose de
crees arc unchangeable, as they are eternal: Condcfcend to
look in piry on the error* which are infrparable from our
nature, and let them not be to us the ground of calamities.
‘I hou had not given us heart; to hate one another, nor hands
to cut one another’* throats: Grant that vve may mutually
affid one another tofupport vet I > rtien of a painful and tran
sitory life: Let not the litt’e differences l etwee 1 the vell
nientt. that cover our feeble t/xiies, between < u defective
languages, between our ridiculous culloms, between our
many imperfciß laws ; between cur many fooblh
between cur several conditions, so unequal in oqr eyes, and
so equal in thine; let not the many dillinC. ions that denote
she teveral dalles of atoms called men be signals of hatred
and persecution. May those who light up wax-tapers at
noon-day to celebrate thee, bear with those w ho are content
with the light of the fun thou hail placed in the firmament.
Let not thole, w ho, to tell us we mud lo\e thee, cover their
robe with white linen, hold in delegation those who tell
*os the fame thing in a cloak cf black woolen. May it be
the fame to adore thee in a jargon formed from an antient
language, or in a jargon more modern. May those
whose vedure is dyevl with red or w'ith purple, who rule
over a small parcel of a finall heap of the mud of this earth,
and who polTefs fome rounded bits of a certain metal, enjoy
without pride w hit they call grandeur and riches; and may
others behold them without envy: For thou knoued that in
these vanities there is nothing to be envied, nothing to be
proud of. May all men remember that they are brethren,
” may they abhor the t> ranny that is exercised over the mind,
as they execrate the vit lence that takes by force the fruit of
labouc and peaceful induilry. If the scourge of war be ne
cclTary, let us not hate, let us not devour, one another in the
midd of peace ; but let us employ our momentary exillence
in blcfling equally in a thoufdnd different languages, from
Siam to California, thy goodness which has given us this
momentary exillence.
