Lieut. George Sweetenham, late of the South-Carolina
independent companies, is appointed from the half-pay to
be a lieutenant in the 9th regiment now in East-Florida, in
room of Lieut. Eufebius Chute, who retires on half-pay.
A’great many mortars, cannon, Sec. and a large quantity
of ordnance stores for East-Florida, are arrived here in the
Friendship, Ball, from London; also a number of paifen
gers for the fame province.
Oft. 22. On Wednesday last put in here to refit, the (hip
Tracey, Gapt. Robert Pring, from Boilon, bound for Cape-
Fear, Iraving loft her mizen and main malls, and (histed her
ballast in a gale of wind (he met with in the night of the sth
inst. off Cape-Hatteras.
Thursday also put in here, very leaky, the ship Generous
Planters, Capt. John.Calfe, from St. Christopher’s, for Lon
don. She left St. Christopher’s the 28th ult. andfprung a-
Jeak the 2d inst.
The sloop Indhftry, Wilson Cooke, master, from Winyah
for fome time look’d upon as a miffing veflel, after being 102
days at sea, and relieved by ten different veflels, arrived at
Madeira the ift ult.
The Bth of August last, Capt. George Ball, from Provi
dence, with dispatches from his Excellency General Shirley,
and on the 19th his Majesty’s ship Venus, commanded by
Capt. Weller, with letters from Sir William Burnaby, com
mander in chief of his Majesty’s Ihips at Jamaica, to the count
d’Estaing, governor-general of Hispaniola, touching the ex
traordinary conduct of the French fome time before, towards
his Majesty’s fubje&s raking fait on Turks-Iftand, in re
“ moving and carrying his Majesty’s said fubjeds prisoners
** to Cape-Francois, burning theii huts and destroying their
** provisions,” arrived at the Cape, and delivered their dis
patches, but were told that the governor-general was not
then in that capital; upon which, on the 220, they proceed
ed to Turks-Island, where on Grand-Key they found a Mo-
Jiument or Column erefted, 10 feet wide at the base, and 60
cct high, built of brick and foft mortar, with a square piece
of marble fixed therein bearing this infeription, viz. Homines
Dios nulla re froprius aueJunt quam filutem hommibus dando t
and over it, “ PHARE de CHOISEUL” in large letters
of-iron; and as it did not appear to them, that a monument
in this place could be of the lead fervicc to trade and navi
gation, but that it was rather intended as a mark of poifeffion,
Sec. they immediately proceeded to undermine, and deilroy
ed it in two hours.—Another of these Columns was credked
on Sand Key, but as that might be of fome service to Hi ip
ping, it was left standing. Some time after, the count
d’Eftainp sent a veiled tojamaica, and another to Providence,
with an/wers to the letters that had been delivered by the
Capts. Weller and Ball; which we hear, alledged, as a rca
fon for their removal of the Engliih from Turks-] Hand, that
they had robbed a French ship call away there; and that the
Ph aros was credtcd with no other view than for the general
good of mankind, and preservation of (hipping. Nevcr
tbelefs, we are informed, that a few who still re
main on Turks-Iftand, have been obliged to acknowledge
allegiance to the French King, by figmng a paper the con
tents whereof they were ft rangers to. —The report of two o
ther monuments having been eredted, by the French, on
Maguana, and the Caicos’s, seems to have no foundation;
neither had they yet put any soldiers or settlers on any of the
iilands.
