j£\ eadnpfs in the minds of the. people throughout North-
America, and is fealty a matter which very nearly a daft*
their in cored and liberties, it behoves every lover of his
country to contribute what he can towards their relief. The
principal matters of grievance complained of are,
I. That it impofe* a tax upon them without their con
ton*, by fbctntolvcs or representatives, and to deprives them
of a privilege which has ever been very deer to Bnglitomen,
and which they have hitherto enjoyed, and think tkey have
right to enjoy an common with ther fellow fubie&s in Great*
Britain, and which, if they art deprived of, they think they
cannot, to any proper tonic* he (aid to be a free people.
a. That the namtr to which it it to bo collected will
occasion great trouble and embamffioent to them in tranf
a£tipg their adfairs. - •
j. That it is more expensive, and Itfs euual way of raif
tog money, than their ordinary way of taatftg* , .
4. That by said aft, the jentoiftion ofthe court of admi
rally is extended in Ae colonies, beyond what was ever
thought expedient or fafe in Great Britain, as it fubjeri*
the cotoeifts to prosecutions in that court, for any fupp ofrd
breaches of the damp aft, or any other revenue aft, ?d ia
deprives them of their privilege of being tried by a jury,
which is as great a grievance as the damp duties.
5. That the tax is imposed at a time when they are £?****
ly berthened with publick and private debts, incer’d by
means of the late war, and when their trade it greatly bur
thened and dogg’d, whereby they are deprived es Ae means
of procuring money, to pay thmr provincial taxes, or o
thet debts ; and therefore will greatly diftftto the people.
