For admirable specimens of line writ

vide its inane of June 6th, as follows: The
rain on Sunday evening was one of the
severest we have ever seen. Torrents of
dirty water swirled madly through the
sewers, and several bridges went sifting
to the sea. Two hogs were drowned.
The Rome Courier boasts of the fart
that a firm in that village received a bill
of lading dated Now York, May ‘28th.
The goods were shipped by the Great
Southern freight line—via Charleston—
on the 29th, and were receivi d at the
Horae depot on the 1st instant, ms king
the trip in less than fot>juh|VH and a half.

Many fanners are discouraged and have

One of tho oditors of the Mucou Tele-
>h writes from S« uth-Wcst Georgia:
damage to the cotton crop of thin
section cun hardly be estimated. Iu a
careful survey of fifty acres by tho writer,
he is satisfitHi that not less than five have
been completely washed up and doH-
troyod. Tho laud, too, where tho least
uuuulating, has been greatly injured.—
Thouiuiuds of gullies now fuirow the soil
with uuhightly rents, where washes have
never oocurrod before. The stands of
cotton are defective, and the plant
Ruffe ring from grass aud the lack of work,
though looking more healthy since the
wcuther has changed warmer. In point
of time it is fully three weeks later than
usual. Tho corn crop, unless a sudden
drouth sets in, will bo overwhelming.—
Everywhere it looks green and tlouriah-
iug, aud is beginning to shoot tho tassel.
Monv farmers are propuriug to give it
tho finishing work.
The crop prospects lietween Klberton
and Washington arc very fine—fur better
than any I have seen. The wheat fields
nre numerous and t o iipiiearunoo of rust;
the stand is good, vim stalk tall, with
not yet fully at ease in regard to the con
quests of right and justice achieved at
such enormous cost, and throughout the
South there are still the smoldering
embers of ill will and discontent, kept
alive by an unwise and impolitic pre
scription. Only when the impotent pro
test against the course of events has
ceased among thoae who appealed years
ago to the arbitrament of the sword—
only when all distinctions as to civic
rights and duties have passed away
among the victors and vanquished in
that mighty struggle, will the living 1m>
at peaca and the dead be justly glorified.
Let us earnestly hope that iu tho closing
days of future Sjirings we may see a
whole nation doing homage in harmony
to its dead, and reconciled enemies stand
ing by the graves in which their resent
ments are buried, united by the loesous
of bitter experience, in patriotism aud
religion, in peace and good will.
The London 7\mes of May 16th, has

tute the standing difference in the pro
