remains of u human Dodv, were found

qnently surrounded the case, defying
the utmost exertions ol the police to
kunravel it.
The disincmlKTed limits were care-
Rtlly pm together by enraeotu, and
were round to correspond in every
^particular, nothing Ixing wanting
the arms, which were never
found. The murdered man Inal evi
dently tleen healthy and vigorous,
and til a mt thirty-live years old, hut
no clue whatever could lx 1 discovered
as to liis identity. That a horrible
murder hud lieen committed was cer
tain, first, liecuttse. the lxaly had been
cut up by inexperienced hands, thus
proving that the disniendiernieiit was
not a livak on the ]iart of the medi
cal students, and secondly, la-cause
two bullet wounds were found in the
skull. The police, both of this city
and Brooklyn, left no plan untried
by which the pe.rjxdnttor of the ter
rible crime might lie detected; bnt
their labors were in vain. The head
was photographed and copies were
sent to all police stations throughout
the country. The head itself w
long kept on exhibition in u gin
casein the-Morgue in Brooklyn.
On the night preceding the linding
of the flrst package, Patrick Flood,a
Brooklyn huckman, drove throe sol
diers to IB Mercer street, in this city
and entered with them to drink.—
While he was iu the house two men
came up, leaped on the laix of his
carriage and drove fiiricnislay away.
Several hours later, as a severe storm
was abutiug, the carriage was driven
into a livery stable on Fulton avenue,
ncur Navy street, in Brooklyn, by a
man who was closely wrapped in a
thick gray shawl, under which lie
wore a velvet coat, broadcloth panta
loons, patent leather boots, white
linen, all new, and a large diamond
pin. The horses were reeking with
perspiration, and bad evidently been
driven furiouslv, one of them having
lieen lamed, ’flic strauger left the
carriage at the stable and went away,
saying ho would return. From that
day he was not seen.
After several years this horrible
mystery has been apparently solved
thus: According to a letter recently
received hv a friend of the murdered
man in March last, three men quar
relled at Sichley, Australia. A light
ensued, in which one man was fatal
ly stubbed, the second shot and dan
gerously wounded, and the third ter
ribly beaten. The rutlians were ar
rested, and tiie !bird man in prison
made a confession, implicating him
self and his companions in many
crimes, and among others is the mur
der of one .Joseph Smith, a deserter
from the Twentieth Connccticnt Re
giment, in this city in Ootdhcr, lSit-t.
From his story it appears that he,
with his two companions and Smith,
on the night of the 2d of October,
wereenguged in a debauch, tln-v Inn
ing made a large sum of nnniov by
“bounty jumping.” Smith hud fcloo
in his possession, and his villainous
companions, resolving to get this at
all haszurds, induced him to leave the
saloon where tln-v were drinking, in
Prince street, and enter a lar
The following is the substance of
a confession made to Mr. K. H. Free
man of Binghamton by Kulloff, re
|H-cting the murder of the latter’s
wife.
On the 23d of June, 1845, Kulloff'
told his wife that he hud got hold ol
a little money, and was going West
to find something to do. She said
she w-oiiid never go to Ohio, so far
away train her family, and thut if he
went, she would take her child and
go home. She said she was
rlHKl) or MVJNO WITH HIM ANY
HOW,
and her mother wus anxious for her
to go home. This mude Kulloff an
gry, and words arose lad ween them.
Jit- accused Harriet (his wife) of
wanting to see Dr. Bull, and told her
lliut she thought more of Bull than
aim did of him. She said that she
had a right to do so if she wished,
and tliut Bull wus her cousin. He
told her that site might go where she
pleased, hut that she should not tukc
the child, lie attempted to take the
child away from her, and she clung
to it. In his passion he reached for
the jiestIc of the mortar iu which he
pounded medicines, and
STULX’K HER WITH IT
over the left temple. The blow broke
her skull. She fell with the child in
her arms.
Kulloff took the child and laid it
upou the last. He gave it narcoftic to
stop its crying. He raised Harriet,
and placed iter so that he could ex
amine the wound. He tried to bring
liar to life. lie administered every
restorative he had at hand, and dress
ed the wound carefully. Ill his des
pair he did not know what to do.—
lie tinallv decided to kill himself, and
penter’s shop, or carriage factory, in
Prince street, where Smith lay down
on a liench, and soon fell into a
drunken sleep. One of the men then
shot him through the
which they cut lip tile laalv with ll
tools in the place, and tied up de
fragments in the manner described
above. Two of the men then went
out to look for a wagon, leaving, it is
supposed, the third to clear awav the
traces of their ci no. Then fntowed
the theft of Flood’s carriage, in which
the ghastly parcels were driven to a
lonely wharf in Williamsburg and
then thrown into the river. The
murderers immediately shipped for
Australia, and have since remained
in that country, leading riotous and
vicious lives until their arrest in
March.
The photograph of the murdered
man has lieen shown to tlu- widow of
Joseph Smith who is still living at
Danbury. Conn, and has been purtlv
identified by her, although Hie fea
tures were terribly distorted. Other
persons, however, who knew Smith
intimately, are convined of his iden
tity with tlu- murdered man.and that
this dark riddle has at last been
solved.

POSE.
He passed the night alternately ad
opting and rejecting various plans.—
When daylight came he realized the
fact that something must lie done ut
once. He pulled out and emptied!*
large chest. He wrapped his wife’s
laxly iu strong lied ticking and then
in two sheets. With great difficulty
he crowded her into the chest. He
also placed some flat irons and mortar
in the chest. About 11 o’clock lie
went over to a friend’s and borrowed
a horse and wagon. He put the chest
with the laxly in it into the wagon,
and went toward Capuga lake. It
wus at one time his intention todrire

after a long search. He returned to
the wagon, opened the chest and took
out tlie body, lie tied the iron and

IS THIS JtlLOFF'S DAUGHTER?
The subjoined letter is believed to
la- from Ruloff’s daughter, under the
disguise of a niece:
Franklin, Jan. 10,1870.
Dear Uncle Eu.: On Friday
morning, or rather Thursday night,
1 was taken with a very severe pain
iu the head, caused by cold, which
kept me confined to my lx-d for two
days. The second day, while lying
lln re, concluded to show vour letter
to K. us soon as lie would come up
stairs again, and I done so. He read
the letter, and looking up to me said:
"Bless his old lu-nrt; that letter sounds
just like hint: that is the way the dear
old iioy talks.” Bv tlie way, I must
just here put in that he has learned
to lo\ ■ \ i is dearly us T do.
I begun to think lie didn't mean to
say one word ahout the lock of hair,
hut in a lew moments he hopped up,
sit down on the side of the ta-d. say
ing. "B ell. my dear old girl, 1 must
head, after -bow you that,” and handed me the
‘ ‘ ' lock of hair. As soon as I saw it I
knew wlmt it was; had soon the same
before. 1 asked no questions why he
done so or anything of the kind, and
so ended the would-be joke. As I
s-iid in my lirst 1 would let you know
how f (-amt- out, I thought I ought
to. Bulge was perfectly delighted
with his visit; never enjoyed himself
la tter, and thinks there never was
snob a man iu the world as Uncle E.
He has made me almost believe that
you ary something more than human.
Ty toll the truth, I cannot find words
to express liis opinion of you, and 1
■t outre you it pleases me very much,
for I too have a kind of a liking for
my fat uncle. Now don’t you feel too
proud because K. loves you, for he
loves me too, and I am not one bit
vain of it. We are all well excepting
colds, which is nothing.
Your little niece, P. J. 8.
