Xigger, and proceeded to exact the forfeiture. The delinquent was loath to discharge his debt in this way, but the creditor was iucxoruble, and came down on him for sixteen—which no doubt contained the full force of thirty- nine—and afterwards proceeded to balance bis books by profit and loss. From the Cartenville Express, 27th. IV bile Ben Lattinier, colored, was standing in the grocery store of Mr. A. R. Hudgins, Saturday last, as he said, “discoursing Dr. Lehrad on a subject which was of considerabel in trust to dis whole immunity.” some of tho boys desirous of having a little fun, filled his pockets with coffee, lemons, oranges, etc. After Ben had gotten through with the Doctor, his attention was called to his poekets, and he was advised to run, which he indignantly refused to do, He said, “I'm not gwino to run; dey tried to devustieute my character; but I wouldn't run.'' lie spoke for about an hour, and such .quaking, we never heard before, ami wound up his re marks by noiitivelv affirming that “if ever I finds out wlioputdom things in my pockets, l'U prosecute ’em tor frij/onomelry,” and Ben never preva ricates. From ike BrvruurL Republican, 27th. Yesterday Rebecca Williams, a young negro girl, aged (it vras said) about fourteen years, liut,_from her appearance, seemingly not over ten years, was tried in Hie City Court, before lion. W. K. Chisolm, for the larceny of four huudred aud twenty- five dollars from At is. Long. She confessed the stealing, and in her statement told so many probable tales as to the disposition olio had made of the money, luai it was impossible to know which one to oelioe. When arrested and charged with the theft, she said she had given the money to a negro woman; afterward she staUsl she had lost it, and on the stand yesterday she made the state ment to the Court that she had given it to the detective, who hud told her to say she had lost it, or he would kill her. We are oortain that this is a lie. At any rate, Mrs. Long has not recovered her money, and probably never will. Just before the passenger train for Atlanta left yesterday afternoon, a big burly negro, calling himself El der Gaines, took a seat in the car for white ladie* and gentlemen, and pro posed to occupy it until he reached Atlanta. He was informed that he was in the wrong pew, and would have to take the car for colored peo ple. He refused to move, when li» eremptorily ejected. He ap- to the President of the road, who informed him that the car for colored people was identically the same as those for the whites, and that it was a rule of the railroad company to separate the white and black pas sangers, but to furnish both with the same comforts and accommodation.— To thi* Gaines objected, saying he bail paid first class rates and ought to ride where he pleased on the train. He was then told that he could go on the train in lria proper place, but not oth erwise, to which he replied, that the Supreme Court of the State would have to settle the question. His ob ject was, doubtless, to raise a row, or assert his self-importance. He should have bad a good Vhack or two over the head, and wc are sorry he did not get it The Electric Telegraph In 1187.
