The programme of (lie Griffin Fe male College closcil lust night with a hrilliant concert by Professor Danne- herg anil his music class. The commencement was a brilliant success, and throughout was attended by a large and intelligent audience consisting of patrons and friends of the Institution, and a large number of visitors and pleasure-seekers from a distance On Sunday, the 25th instant, the commencement Beitnon was preached by Bcv. Ilr. Iirantly, of Atlanta, in the Baptist Church, to a large, atten tive congregation, from Luke 10-42. “But there is one tiling needful.” The discourse was appropriate, set ting forth many strong reasons why woman especially should embrace 1 he “one thing needful.” Monday and Tuesday were devoted to examinations of all the classes from the Primary to the Senior, with many pleasant interludes of music by Professor Dniinolx-rg and his class. The examinations were conducted with rigid impartiality, especially in the higher classes and in the higher branches. Kthieu, Astronomy, Men tal Philosophy. Diplomas C* eferred OaOHOIA WKBTSRR A Saianr (hat Will A few persons in this cilyllreelj cl irge that the Lessees of the State Host are trying to manipulate the Georgia West ern in their interest, and utterly prevent its being built. It is alleged that they have so managed the City Council as to seem e that body to a policy of doing i r accomplishing nothing—vis : to secure such an organization of the company ns will either not try to build the road, or as will be unable to do anything in case any earnest effort is made. This is a startling charge, and one that should arouse our vigilant people to the most determined action, if there be any foundation for iL Atlanta must see to it that tho Georgia Western is bailt with out delay, and that no entangling allian ces or dead weights encumber the enter prise, and that it be built in the interest of this city. It is qfeargeil that the policy has been, and is, to either elect a President and Directors composed or under the control of tbe Lessees, who can be used, con trolled, manipulated and managed, just as the Lessees desire it; or if such an organization cannot bo secured then one that will be powerless to accomplish any thing—whose earnest efforts can easily be thwarted and upset by the tricks and schemes of the State Road Lessees and the moneyed rings which that com pany can bring to thefr assistance. To illustrate: Suppose a President is chosen, whose name, past record, and in fluence will add nothing to that confi dence which is necessary to secure the aid that will be needed ? Suppose that the President who may be chosen, should be unable to negotiate a sale of the bonds of tho oity of Atlanta at a fair rate, and thus be defeated in obtaining the money that is needed to carry on the work ? Or suppose such President should sell tho bonds for less amount than they ought to bring — thus squandering the re sources of the city and so crippling the enterprise that it cannot be put through ? Or suppose he should not try to sell tho bonds at all ; not try to raise means nor to make good use of any that may be raised ; but simply mako a fine show of effort in preliminaries and fail to come down to actual unceasing, never ending energy, such as will secure the road with out delay, against all opposition, should there be any ? Such remarks, surmises and charges are freely indulged in and made, by some. Whether there is any real foun dation for these, wo have no means of knowing; but the bare suggestion of any tiling of the kind is startling enough to stir the people of Atlanta to vigilant ac tion. It surely cannot lie, that such expended, men as Bichard Peters anil ex-Governor Brown, who are with ns and of ub, ami who have most emphatically de clared in favor of tho Koad, intend to deceive us, and cheat us out of tho advan tages of this important enterprise. We cannot believe such men would bo guilty of so base and damning nn act. But we had opjiorttinity on yesterday of judg ing what the tomb will be when the design of the Memorial Association will lie carried out. Valentine, the gifted young sculptor, had placed near the tomb his model in plaster of the sarcophagiil, whioh the Lee Memo-1 rial Association propose to place over the grave. It represents General Lee as aslitp in his nightly bivouac beneath the stars, his military cloak around him, and one hand lightly resting upon tiie sword which lies at his side. The face is copied from tbe bnBt, which Valentine mude just a few mouths before General Lee’s death, and which has been pronounced by fami- lv and friends u sjieaking likeness. The picture is easy and graceful, just the position in which the old hero used to sleep, the couch on which it rests is inscribed witli the coat of arms of Virginia, and other appro priate devices. “ In a word, the model is a grand triumph of art, and has elicited the most unbounded expressions of en thusiastic approval. When the plas ter shall have given place to the pure marble, and the plans of the Associa tion for remodeling the room shall have been carried out, it will be a me morial worthy of ,the great chieftain, entitled to take rank with the finest similar works in thi^world, and will place the name of mlwaril Valentine along side of the great masters.
