Corn aad Flour* We have no alterations ir our local commercial reports from Wednesday.— The only activity in provisions is muni fest only in corn and flour, which ruh stiff. Corn at $1.05 by the car load.— Flour is steady and in good demand. Bacon is flat, with no animation percept ible. The regular meeting of Council to night will be, perhaps, the most impor tant one to the citizens of Atlanta that has bead held m many years. There will be appointed by the Council a Committee of five to cast till vote of the city fur Presides t of the Georgia Western Railroad; and it is of the most vital importance to the city that men should be appointed upon that Commit tee who have no individual interests to advance; but men who have the interest of the city at heart. It la well known that there are several individual candidates for this place—good and capable men; but men whose inter eats, perhaps, are not cemeuted to those of Atlanta. The city’s stock will control the election; and a citizen should be elected who will act for the interest of the city entirely. The people—the tax-payers—should be on hand to-niglit, to watch, and if nec essary, and instruct their representatives in the Council. We have faith that the Council will not dare to uct from interested motives in this election—notwithstanding it is hint ed that there if) a probability rings will be formed, for certain purposes. We venture this much as a note of warning, but promise that should such a thing occur, to ring it in their ears as long os our ink and types last. AMONG THE ROSES. A Wonrtrrfal Paradise of Flowers. Tke lee Macklne. We learn that the Ice Mannfncturing Company have their machine in complete working order, and are now mnkiug ice They will, in a few days, be producing it in large quantities, and expect to throw it open to public inspection soon, of which due notioe will be given. Commencement at Atlaata University. Late last evening we received a synop sis of the report made to the Governor bt the Board of Visitors to the examiuu tions of the students of the Atlanta Uni versity. It is a very lengthy paper, copied by a lady, in a delicate hand, with very pale ink. Neither the editor nor the printers could read it with any satis faction. Anything for a printer to set up in th« night should be written in a very plaii bold hand, with large characters. We learn that all concerned, both teachers and students, acquitted them selves handsomely. Getting (Jataijr. Already we hear predictions from th« weatherwise that no more rain will fall for—oh, ever so long; and then begin t<* calculate the damages which will accrue in such a contingency. Now, it hasn’t been four days since we had a young deluge all over this section, and the water has bare ly receded from the furrows sufficiently to plough. To be sure it would work in calculable damage to the now promising corn prospect; but why do people forever complain ? If its a mind to rain, let it rain; aud if it is disposed to keep dry, let grumblers keep their mouthing to themselves. v That man is unfortunate who has been to LuGmuga aud has not visited the flower garden of Mrs. Judge Ferrell. Equally unfortunate is be who has not had an opportunity to visit it. Most un fortunate of all is he who expects to di« without having visited it While on a hurried visit to LaGrange, during the present week, we were most kindly afforded an opportunity to enter these grounds and inspeot their incom parable loveliness. One enters witL something of a feeling of awe—that Awe which comes of an intense admiration of what is most lovely. We have ofteu thought that nature's true religion is taught by her beautiful aspects more than by her grand appearances. Here we have a happy illustration. No rarer collection of shrubbery and flowers can be found anywhere. Here are all ipuuner of lines, fairer than ever art oonct ived. All man ner of foliage, nature's most brilliant tplendors, beautified and height ened by art, are on every hand, comprising a wilderness of loveliness which is perfectly incomparable. Saun tering along those delightful walks one is continually surprised at the various freaks of genuine art tastes displayed in a mul titude of forms. We never know what we will see next. It is beauty upon beau ty—a succession of loveliness which calls to mind the line of the poet: ‘•And, oh! if then* be an Elysium on earth It in thin! It la thia I" If the garden of Eden was half as love ly as this Adam certainly bartered a mag nificent birthright for a bite at one mis erable apple. Mrs. Ferrell will accept our thanks for the opportunity afforded ns to visit this garden. It is not often that one has such an opportunity to inspect and admire so much loveliness. A VIGILANT POLICEMAN. THE MAYOR'S COURT. A Nymph da Para—All About a Tta-cap —John Saaltk aad Lady. It was with no ordinary feelings of trepidation that we wended oar way to ward the court room yesterday morning. We were fearful lest his Honor had over worked himself trying the 'rioters, and expected to see our good friend Lowry in the Chair of Fate. But on entering t,he room we were very agreeably surprised to behold his Honor in the full bloom of a vigorous manhood; but wo were pained to notioe the absence of Wil liams. We hope he has not been thrown off hia horse and hurt. The assembly present was more select, if anything, than that of the day preceding, among them we notioed Col. John D. Lloyd, of the New Era, whose object, however, was to take notes, and not to answer for any graver offense than driving a goose quill. To our left we were flanked by a distin guished member of the dental profes sion and balloonist. Right of him sat a well known Methodist minister of the Gospel, left of him the brother of a cele brated Alderman, to the rear of him a motley crowd of negroes, and to the front of him his Honor, and Johnson, and policemen 1 without number. We noticed a prominent wholesale liquor dealer, a large number of “town boys” and quite a number of the upper ten whose names do not readily occur to us. Noticing considerable shuffling, his Honor thought well to introduce the beautiful and^ accomplished MISS JOSEPHINE TOMPKINS, and see if her presence could exert a tranquilizing influence. Miss Josephine is a young lady of exceedingly delicate organization and symmetrical propor tion. Her forehead looks like a beauti- Tuesday evening, at Peter’s street rail road crossing, and asked him to shew him the way to prayer meeting. The negro heeitafced. Robert threatened to blow out his d—d brains if he didn’t go with him at onoe. For this manifesta tion of pity, his Honor stuck $10 and costs upon him. THOMAS FINLEY has a four foot high wife. She pays the rent, and he sleeps. They had one cup and one saucer. Mrs. Finley broke the cup the other day. Mr. Finley couldn’t stand it; so he spanked her. Yesterday morning they had a quarrel before they got out of bed. They wouldn’t tell what it was about. An old auntie poked her umbrella at Tom, and that kept him from telling. After they got np they had it out in good earnest. His Honor assessed damages at $10, and repeated his well- known views as to the purposes for which women were made. MOONLIGHT EXCURSION. The Ladles Memorial Association to Visit Stone Mountala—A Gilt Edge Affair. We learn that the ladies of the Memo rial Association, of this city, intend giv ing a grand moonlight excursion to Stone Mountain on next Wednesday evening, July 5th. Preparations are on foot to make this the most pleasant and agreea ble excursion that has yet taken place. The ladies, who are managing the affair, are well known aud appreciated for their social position in society and their judg ment and skill in rendering a party of this kind as pleasant and enjoyable as any one could wish. It is not necessary, we presume, to urge upon our pleasure seekers the advantages of this rare op portunity for a social reunion ; but this fully prepared sculpture of the finest j timely announcement is simply made as Laws vs. Smith. Parian marble, her cheeks resem ble the rose in color and the lily in purity, her eyes give forth such an expression of transcendental sweetness and tender feeling as would melt and subdue the most adamantine heart, a tempting dimpfe rested on her chin, nestliug there like a sly cupid among the roses; and her Ups, with all the lucious fragrance of the pomegrauite, ’seemed an item of news. Fuller particulars will be giveu in time for all to prepare for this occasion. MORE FISHERMEN. A Good Sin uk and J A party of gentlemen from the foun dry of Messrs. P »rt**r & Butler put out mode to waste its existence away in one j lip t i Je Air-Lino Railroad, about thirty Tk« Georgia Watcia Railroad. We like the feeling that is abroad in the city relative to this grand railroad en terprise. There isbutono sentiment and that is in favor of the road. I*s real ad vantage to Atlanta is being understood. It is looked upon as an immediate neces sity—a necessity that must not be avoid ed any longer but encountered and over come. The Georgia Western is a great enter prise. It will be of incalculable benefit to Atlanta. Let it be ran through on an independent schedule. When officers are elected let them be men who will bnild the road and operate it for the last dollar that is in it. Keep it free from entangling alliances and make it on inde pendent, paying railroad enterprise. A day or two siuce, an honest., hard- fisted blacksmith of Atlanta, and a man who is in cosy circumstances, stepped out of his shop just as he had quit work, without changing his clothes. In fact, his appearance was decidedly neglige. In this costume, ho took a nip or two with his friends, and very naturally began joking and talking, just for fun. It oo happened that a member of the police, who has attained some notoriety hereto fore for his vigilance, was standing near the little knot of the convivial friends of the blacksmith, when the latter gentle man jocularly api^led to them for pe cuniary assistance, and closed up by saying that if some one did not let him have money enough to buy a supper, he would be forced to go to the calaboose for bis evening repast The M. P. re ferred to, did not know the blacksmith, and supposing him to belong to that nu merous class known as “dead beats,” collared him, at the same time roughly remarking, “Yes, I’ll give you a meal or two and one or two months with Grant, Alexander & C‘>. °n the railroad.” He was marching rapidly away with onr hero towards the calaboose, intent apon getting at least ouo more vagrant out of town. His friends had to come to his rescue, and explain who the prisoner was, before he was released from custody. The blacksmith thinks the joke was car ried too fur all around. long, lasting, eternal kiss. Such beiug her facial appearance it is not to be won dered at that she should have beans, and plenty of them; but with a maidenly modesty, known only to those of such a tender cast as herself, she selected from the number one the bright particular miles, to Ht-waiiuee Greek. They were absent several days, ami caught vast quan tities of fish, which were cooked and de voured in camps. The party returned yesterday, looking fat and saucy, each man bringing with him a fine string of fish. The whole story is told by the par- star of her acquaintance, upon whom j ty themselves, and no oue else can »lio lavished the fall warmth and wealth tl .|i whether the story is a little “dally of her young hearts affections. But,! or uot . We kuow it is CU8 tomary for Allan!* and !*a »h AIr-Llne Rall- Tlie Directors of the Atlanta and 8a vannah Air-Line Railroad have been in session in this city for the past two days. Though their sittings have been private it is plain from the appearance of the gentlemen constituting the Board that they mean business uml .i good deal of it. Though the business transacted by the Board has not been made public, the im pression has gotten out that the prospect for building the rood is better than it has ever been since the enterprise was pro jected. It is understood that the friends j of the road have determined to build it uud to build it at once. Mr. George \V. Cook, of this city, has been elected a Director rice Mr. — Hod- son, deceased. Dr. Ray'F is in the Kimball House, Room No. 2(5; eutiaucc on Wall Street fit * alas, for the frailty of our human affec tions 1 John did not appreciate the treasure within his grasp, who wished to embrace him and hang upon his neck as a necklace. He spurned hor advances, and did many other things which a gal lant gentleman woald scorn to do. Driv en to distraction by the heartless conduct of “the apple of her eye” she did as many other romautie young ladies would have done. What was life to her with' out John ? Nothing. She resolved to commit suicide. Yes, she would end her weary life, and let her lone-love bo som rest in peace. “Perhaps,” she rea soned, “in after years he will appreciate the love I bore him, and flying away from the busy haunts of men, he will pause o'er the grassy mound which marks my last resting place and shed a tear to the memory of that young heart which broke for love of him.” Brilliant idea ! And fortunate coincidence ! Her mother had brought home that day a large black bottle, filled, she said, with a liquid rat exterminator. At the dead hour of night she would partake of this poison, and the morning’s sun would find her very dead indeed. But the old woman fibbed when she said it was rat poison ; it proved to be genuine mo- nongahela, and as Josephine took a rath er largo drink of it, it is to be supposed that she felt slightly boozy. She then became noisy and troublesome; applied epithets and brick to her friends—and, taken os a whole, was unmanageable. His Honor was deeply Affected at this recital of unrequited afflicted; felt at a loss to sportsmen in this line to bring back huge stories of their success, which they are anxious to have the * 'can’t-get-away club” believe. AN OLD-FASHIOVRD WRESTLING MATCH. A Mooted (location i—Which la Jacob and which la the Angel. At the old Natioual Hotel, yesterday evening, a thousand dollar wrestling match was hatched up between a Broad street stock jobber aud a professional The jobber made the wager and the other accepted. We did not learn whether the money was put up or not, but we did hear that the dealer in stocks was put down several times. The “professional,” though not over two-thirds his weight, was too much for Broad street, and his chagrin aud mortification came near get ting him into a deeper sea. He will not be apt to tackle that chap again for a wrestle. Yesterday the spring term of Mrs. McCaiulless’ school was brought to a close and an examination of the pupils took place. This examination was very thor ough and showed that the course of in struction had been complete in all its detail. The pupils, many of whom are daughters of prominent citizens, acquit ted themselves splendidly, showing their i ure ^ r - L* 00 his business, and fur- own diligence in study its well as the j (■her swore that he and Kuhn had not know what was coming over the young ability of their teachers. It was dne me that the above statement should be made, and from yonr article of yesterday it is proper I should apologize to Messrs. Crittenden A Co.— If my conduot was offensive to these gen tlemen, I respectfully offer an apology.— These gentlemen have made the Kimball House so attractive that it is nightly resorted to by a large number of gentlemen. I went to the hotel and met Mr. Smith there in a public crowd, and spat iD his tioe, and while the “beer may have been put on Hopkins,” yet a number of gentlemen witnessed what was pnt on Bmith. I shall trouble yon no more with cards abont this matter. Publicly I brand Messrs. Kahn and Smith as ma licious in their persecutions of me, and as untruthful and contemptible scoun drel*. If Messrs. Kuhn and Smith see proper to insert advertisements relative to me or my business, or cards relative to this or any other matter connected with me, I assure them that they can do so fearlessly, for I shall now treat anything of the kind with silence and not reply to them, so that with qniUs they can ex hibit a bravery that the public can ap preciate. SYNOPSIS OF THE WHOLE AFFAIR. Messrs. Kuhn A Smith are partners and artists in the city of Atlanta. Mr. Lane is also engaged in the same busi ness. During the last session of Fulton Superior Court, Mr. Lane was indicted for doing some work in his gallery on Sunday, and was fined by Judge Hop kins fifty dollars and costs. In a few days after this there appeared in The Sun the following advertisement: tar AT KUHN A SMITH'S popular Gallery are finished every day aome of the finest pictures ever made in the State. That get* the beer on Hopkins. Junl7d3t Mr. Lane then wrote aud sent to Messrs. Kuhn k Smith notes respecting said advertisement These notes Messrs. Kuhn k Smith refused to reply to in writing, nor were their verbal messages satisfactory. Last Tuesday .night Mr. Lane went to the Kimball House and there met Mr. Smith in a crowd of gentlemen and deliberately spat in his face. A few blows were then passed between the parties, for which they were up before the Mayor next morning.
