If this intimated charge is correct, no language can convey the enormity of the crime of which they havo beon guilty, mill no denunciation can to too severe. Those who are under the noecssity of sending their boys away from home to bo oducated certainly could not do better than to send them to Col. Johust m, if as well. Advertising. A New York paper very sensibly says nothing is moro common than to hear people talk of what thoy pay for adver tising, etc., as so much given to charity. Newspapers, by enhancing tho value of property iu the neighborhood, giving tho localities iu which they aro pub lished a reputation nbrond, benefit all such, particularly if they aro merchants or real estate owners, twice tho amount weekly of the meager sum they pay for then' support. Besides, every public spirited citizen has a laudable pride in having a paper of which ho is not ashamed, even if ho should pick it up in Now l'ork and Washington. A good looking, thriving shoot helps property, gives a character to .locality, and is, iu many rospccts, a pnblic convenience. If from any cause tho matter in tho local or editorial column should not bo up to your standard, do not cast it aside and prououuco it good for nothing, until sat isfied thero has boeu no more lubor be stowed upon it than is paid for, ii you waut a good readable sheet it must he supported. Yesterday tho uttowlancc \*us not so large, hut near ly all present were more or less interest ed ono way or another. Tho fust cuso was that of JOE ni'EKS, a stalwart negro, arraigned for fast .and reckless driving through the street. Joe's oxcuso was that his horse was a well- knowu spirited steed, which had previous to this caused his several different owners a great deal of trouble aud sonio money. The auimal, Joo said, became frightened aud dashed along Hunter Street forsowe distance before he could be checked; and after getting him well iu hand he rotracod the route at an equally furious rato for spito. Several witnesses did not'hear Mrs. L. swear, or uso any indeoent words, while others proved to the contrary. The thing was mixed so, His Honor dismissed the ease. The next case against her was pre ferred by the same negro, who charged Mrs. Lambert with selling liquor on tho Sabbath. Tho same crowd of wituossos were re-sworn, but not enough truth was distilled from tho whole tea party to war rant a oonvietion, in tho opinion of the Mayor, and she was also discharged in this case. ‘'Atlanta As It 1*.” lHOiKY NUNNALLY, colored, came up with two or three sovtre gashes cut over his os froutU, his right eye entirely goue, aud his face otherwise mangled. Two officers went to his house the night before, liclioviug ho was har boring tlio robbers who assaulted young Maffitt, Sunday night. When they requested Henry to strike light he refused, and began cursing aud swearing at a terrible rate, Tlio officers endeavored to persuade him from making so much noise as they were in the yard near the house, and appre hensive that the supposed robbers would escape. But this only sorvod to arouse Henry’s passions, till at lost ho and one of them clinched, when Henry received a blow over the head. Tho fight lasted sorno tiino, and Henry got the worst of it. Ho was lodged in the calaboose. His Honor reviewed the testimony at length, and entered into a long dissertation on several nice legal points, dissecting Ihe 14th and 15th amendments to the Con stitution, and dismissing tho prisoner with 85 fino aud oosts. It was at least a fifty dollar case, but he got full credit for his wound s, JOHN GABRETT was up for drunk, disorderly and creat ing a disturbance. John was satisfied that ho had cot sworn an oath in two years; that if auy man said he hod ho simply stated the wrong thing. Butsov- cral witnesses took an oath that John did not only swear, but was most gloriously drunk iu tho bargain. This pat the blush on John, and he turnod several degrees blacker. It was no uso, odo could tell from the cut of His Honor's cyo what was coming—the stereotyped 810 and costs. Several cases wero continued till this morning. Iml'ortunt Dcliluii byhli IIonoi-.JiitlK We have received from tho author, Johu Staiuhaok Wilson, M. D., of this city, a neat little work of the above title. It is now estimated at thirty thousand. Pending argument for defendant in this case, the Court adjourned till 10 o’e'.ock a. m. to-morrow. A very interesting question to day was argued before his Honor, tho Ordinary, on a writ of habeas corpus, calling on the Blatc to show cause why Anthony Brown, convicted during tho July Term of tho District Court and sentenced by his Hon or, Judge Lawrenoo, to a fine of 8100 or twelve months on the public Roads, &c., for the offense of larceny from tho house, should uot bo discharged. By his attorneys, Messrs. The Court of Ordinary, after long and ablo arguments, held, “That the suit should bo quashed and the priaonor remanded to jail for tho said six mouths on the ground that a Court can amend ita own judgment JVimc pro lane even after its judgment has been entered on the minutes as the law under tlio Code, is very liberal in allowing amend- mentSj and in especially as the case at bar was one which had been amended in tho furtherance of jnstice. Tho Court further held that it could not, on a writ of habeas corpus, reverse tho decision of tho Judge of the District Conrt; that tho prisoners remedy was by a writ of certiorari granted 1 >y tlio Judge of the Superior Court, aud uot by the writ of habeas corpus sought’for. Trial of the Traction Engine. Tho work of erecting the woudcr/ul Traction Engine, to which allusion has been made several times iu tho columns of tho Nows, was completed on Saturday uftcruoou, and a large number of curious ami interested spectators wero present at tho wharf of tho Empire Steamship Com pany to witness tho first trial of tho ma chine, among them several machinists.— Steam was raised in a short time, suffi cient to put tho eugiuo iu motion, and it was movod off iu a manner astonishing to all. Though not a “thing of beauty," it is not so uncomely iu its appearance as one would think from an inspection of its various ports. Tho apporeut case and graccfulucss of its motions arc not much inferior to thoso of au ordinary railroad engine. Tho position of tlic driver is on a scat in front, with all of the levers necessary for working the eugiuo within convenient reach. A wheel iu front, which is con trolled by the driver with perfect oase, regulates tho turnings of tho engine, whioh aro greatly facilitated by tho fact that tho side wheels may bo worked back wards or forwards, like the wheels of a double engine steamboat, so that it cau be turned around almost within Us own length. Every very ono who witnessed the test on Saturday expressed tho opinion that it was a success, and it is confidently be lieved that thoso who are contemplating its use wUl not bo disappointed. Crowds of persona visited tho wharf yesterday to look at this innovation upon tho present facilities for road travel; thoy wero orriv ing and departing tho wholo day.
