The numerous arrests, daring the i>nst
week, |of the miscegenationists, has occa
sioned some comment. Among respecta
ble white men there is but one opinion—
tlmt stern and decisive measures should
bo taken to rid the community of this so
cial .-.tench. There is no justification
whatever for such a crime, and certainly
there is no reason why ilia offenders
should not ho severely punished. Tho
parties to such transactions aro ulwaya of
tho most sunken and degraded classes of
both room, nud tlio white women aro
scorned and despised by all block men
who have any worth or self-respect.
But such a thing as a raid upon these
miserable creatures could not pass with
out arousing tho patiiotic ire of unprin
cipled und knavish demagogues, whose
only chance for notoriety is in the defence
of crime. We liovo been informed, on
apparently good testimony, that on lust
Sunday evening, iu tho negro Church on
Wheat Street, these arrests wero made
tho subjects of consideration. Alderman
Finch, tho negro who mis represents tho
tho Fourth Ward, mado one of his char
acteristic attempts, and declared tho ur-
rests a flagrant outrage, expressed sym
pathy with tlio criminals, called upon the
negroes present to start a subscription for
a “Defence Fund,"nnd declared that they
ought not to rest content until they nre
free to marry ns they please.
Such i3 the story which has been re
lated to us, and wo liavo no doubt of its
subotautiul truth. Thcro is no subject
more calculated lo arouse tho bad feel
ings of the human heart than this. The
prohibition of marriago between whites
and blacks is intended fur the equal pro
tection of both, and for tho preservation
of morality. It protects tho negroes from
intercourse with tho most haso of white
men and women; it protects the whites
from the presence of crime and the annoy
ance of a train of vagrants. It is a law
tho enforcement of which is of incalcu
lably more benefit to the blacks than
it is to tho whites, for while the latter
havo tho means to ho out of tho roach of
the demoralizing effects of its violation,
the former would havo to live with it in
their very midst. Snell utterances ns
those made by Aldertnan Finch will only
redound to the injury of his owu race,
aud lead to a state of feeling certainly not
ugiecablo to those whose mistaken notions
of right producod it. Ho is only acting
tho part of au unscrupulous demagogue,
nud if he continues his incendiary har
angues, ho will yet causo his people to
exclaim; “Save us from our friends!’’

REMARKS.
Thcro has been a much healthier feel
ing iu the market to-dny than yesterday,
and tho amount of business exhibited a
very praclicablo improvement. Prices
havo remained pretty stiff, and sales
were, for Iho greater part cash transac
tions. Tlio great amount of building gft-
iug on, renders building materials more
than usually lively. Notwithstanding the
immense amount of lumber shipped to
this city—nnd it was greatly in excess of
tho supply of nuy previous period—it
has met with a ready sale. There have
boon quite a largo number of mills nt
work to meet tlio demand; butn groat
deal of very inferior lumber lias been
put upon tho market. Tho mill of
Richardson & Crauksliaw, near Adairs-
villo, has found an unusual demand from
Atlauta, nnd has boon compelled to run
night nnd day. Wo havo been informed
that all tho others havo boon equally well
patronized. Lime, cement, unils nnd nil
other articles for building, aro in ready
demand, and wo believo largo orders nro
daily filled for parties in towns nt a dis
tance. In the brick Hue wo havo heard
considerable complaint of tho inferior
supply on hand. It is alleged by those
who ought to know, that thcro is much
grouud for improvement. Wo hope this
will soon bo remedied, and complaint
cease to exist. Iu breadstuff's tho demand

Crawfori>villh, Go., July 31, 1871.
Eds. Sun: Will you, or some of your
numerous readers, explain tho following
phenomena to mo ? There is a gin fac
tory iu this place, and upon a quiet day
or at night when all sounds of business
aro at an cud, a faint but distinct pop
ping or cracking cau be board continual
ly in all portions of the shop, or wherever
a neio tjlu is sitting. This sound does
not conic from an old gin. Upon turn
ing tho breast, or cillinder, of one of
these new gins which os been set aside
for several days or weeks, this crocking
becomes a ioud popping sound. “Tho

is that it is caused by currents of elec
tricity; but if 60, why not the same in

some of ye college boys can explain the
difficulty satisfactorily.
