The New Dry Dock Ikauiurated
The excitement on the river yes

the new dry dock, by its owners,
Messrs. Units * Jones, who invited,
we believe, u large number of friends
to witness tht| docking of tbo pilot
boat John It Wilder, the steam tug
Christiana and a schooner. These
throe vessels were safely taken in ont
of the wet, the dock accommodating
them at one time quite conveniently.
The steam pumps worked finely, I
throwing out their thousands of gal
lons per hour, and lowering the
water in the dock quite perceptibly
each minute. Those who wore pres-
st'lit expressed themselves satisfied jn
the highest with the dock and its ap
paratus. Messrs. Usiua& Jones liuvu
worked long and patiently in the face
of discouragements and drawbacks
that would nave disheartened many
men. Their intrepidity has given
tlie port of Savannah a great help in
the march of progress, which will
necessarily afford us greater command
over commerce in the future, and (lio

accommodation of shipping.

Dunning a Alan in Church.
ltather a ludicrous seono occurred in a
colored Church in thi. city. It appears
that some time ago one Alex. Sherman,
colored, bceamo indebted for house rent
to his landlady, Nancy Evans, colored.—
Ho was dunned long and faithfully, bnt
always had an abundance of excuses, with
a woful lack of money. Tho landlady's
temper began to got a little milled at tho
treatment received from her tenant, and
sho was not in a very heavenly frame of
mind when sho saw her debtor seated in
a conspicuous portion of the church—
with the colored aristocracy—on Sunday.
Whou tho service closed, the customary
collection wus taken up, and the breth
ren and sisters were invited to como up
and lay their money on tho table. To
the land tally’s surprise and indignation,
among tho rost who started to tho table
with some cash was hor tenant, whom sho
had Ivocn unable to mako settle. As ho
passed along tbo aisle sho caught him by
the coat tuil, and in a very audible tone
demanded her house rent, while she hung
to the garment. But the wily debtor
was equal to tho emergency. Merely re
marking that she “must bo a d n
fool,” he pulled ont a handful of snnil
which ho happened to have in his pocket,
and threw dust in the old lady's eve*.—
This blinded her, and had the effect ol
making her release him. On yosterdsy
