The Wisconsin Democrats have nomi- mated ex-Senator Doolittle for Gov ernor. Darden, who killed McCarthy, attemp ted to butt his brains out. He had bail a bad dream. Gambetta lias proposed to the French Republican Union the dissolution of the ? resent Assembly on the first of May, 872. Iuthe Wisconsin Democratic platform, the 7th resolution deprecates and de nounces every outbreak of lawlessness and violence at the North and South, and declares that the acts of Congress which authorizes tho employment of a standing army to garrison the places where elections are to bo held, and con stitute a local police in States, and which empower officers of the Federal admin istration to interpose military force for the purpose of aiding a political conven tion, are subversive of free government and a perpetual menace to the public liberty. San Domingo is tranquil. At last ad vices it was financially relieved by the receipt of the proceeds of tho United States San Domingo loan. The sugar and tobacco crops in Hay ti ore large. A churoli iu Balano, Italy, has been struck by lightning. Thirty-two were killed and injured. It is said that Longfellow strained the tendon of one of his foro legs, and will bo lamed for life. It is ulso said that $200,000 changed bauds on the quarter stretch ulonc. Morrissey won $50,000. The owner of Helmbold won at least 860,- 000. Gambetta’s bill proposes the dissolu tion of the Natioual Assembly on the ground that their discussions have proved fruitless, and provides for tho election of a Constitutional Assembly. It also pro vides for the resignation of Theirs when the Assembly is elected. A special to the Loudon Times states that the discussion on dissolving the As sembly is creating the greatest excite ment. A conflict is apprehended. South Side Square,{Hartford, Indiana, has been burned—loss forty thousand dollars. Supposed to be the work of uii incendiary. A witness in the Buffenbarger case says Mrs. R. had told her children that he came to see her under the impression thut sho was 1311 UVuburger’s daughter; that when Colburn fouud out that she was Buffenbarger’s wife, he blipped card into her hand, with words on it to the effect that he would not marry while •fee (Mrs. 13.) was a married woman. On the cross examination the witness •aid Mr. and Mrs. R. seemed to live very happily together, and she never saw any- jured. St. Louis, August 24.—Dispatches from Huntsville, Missouri, say 1,200 ex Confederates met at Roanoke Fair Grounds io-day. Governor Reynolds, General Shelby and others addressed them. Politics were not alluded to. Tho meeting passed the following resolution: “That it is the duty of all to turn their bocks upon tho past and grasp manfully the duties and responsibilities cf He future.” MISSISSIPPI. Tho bwooietor which WAS Wednesday afternoon on the Now England const has extended Southward, with diminishing pressure, and is now off Capo Hatteras. South and Southeasterly winds have boon very generally refuted dining the day from South Carolina to Maine, with cloudy aud variable weather. Light local rains have lieen reported from New Jer sey, rain fell last night at most stations northeast of Georgia. Smoke and haze still continues from Michigan to New York, and oulv light showers wore report ed last night from the lower lakes. The cloudiness has increased very generally in the Missippi and Ohio valleys, and a severe local storm is now reported from Southern Illinois. The barometer will probably continue to fall along fho entire Atlantic Coast, with riaiug tem|»ratnre ami light south west winds from Virgiuia and Kentucky to New England. The conditions will be favoruble for local storms over this small area to-night; aud on Friday the burome- ter will probably coutinne high, with clear and pleasant weather. FOREIGN NEWS. J Spirited .tceannt of the Ureal Rare, Saiutoga, August 24.—Amid uluiost breathless silence, broken only by some betting, a man proclaiming to lay Silk) to @30 on Longfellow, the flag fell. At the first attempt to start the horses Helmlwld at once took a lead of three lengths, lmt in going around tho upper turn Longfel low closed the gap and before reaching tlie quartet lKile, had token the lead from Hehnbold. Ho led a length along the bock stretch tuid at tlie half mile mark was a length aud a half in front, which space lie kept open along the lower side to tho home stretch turn. A burst of np plausc greeted him as ho went under the string on tlie first mile, u clear length and a half ahead iu 1 :M, both horses under a strong pull. At the turn Helmbold drew a little clo ser, and lay at Longfellows' quarters throughout the next quarter mile. As tho half-milo polo was passed ho reached his opponent’s saddle girths. On the lower stretch Longfellow begun to draw slightly away; and ns they went under the string on the second mile run in 2:00, ho was exuctly a length ahead. He re tained this advantage to tho quarter; but at tbo linlf mile Helmbold was again at his saddle girths, haugiug to him liko a shadow that would not be shaken off.— Tho murmured applause of tbe vast as semblage burst iuto a thunderous shout of irrepressible exultatiou ns Helmbold closed and collared Longfellow, ia com ing up tbo homo stretch, passed him, aud weut under the striug on the third mile a clear leugth ahead iu 5:43. The great Kentucky track, already be ginning to hoist uumistakable signals of distress, the bookers of Helmbold became frantically jubilant at this unexpected change in tho aspect of affairs, sod shouts of exultant applause rent the air. At the upper turn Holmbold was two lengths nhead, and ho increased his lead to three lengths at the quarter. Along the back stretch ho steadily drew awsy from his already beatcu opponent, and the six lengths advantage ho hod at the b df mile he made into a score along the tower stretch. The race was virtually over, for Helm lwld galloped up the home stretch ami under tho string an easy winner, twenty lengtlis ahead of tho much distressed Longfellow.
