JkaJ- Dick Yates is to deliver a course of lectaies this winter. They are not temperance. The Now York II orbi says "Syn dicate” is a word “selected to give a sort of strutting dignity to a very equivocal transaction." That is a good word to cover rascality. Bair Massachusetts has htul a genuine “Ku-Klux outrage.” Some of the par ties have been indicted, but the others have escaped so far—it being inqtossible to identify them on account of their hav ing been masked. M. An English preacher, we are told, declares, as one having authority, that there are twelve times as many women in Heaven as men. It is difficult to on derstand how a divine can make such I statement in the face of the fact, given upon Bible authority, that, upon one oc casion, there was silenoe in heaven for the space of half an hour. A dispatch published a day or two ago gave a rumor tliat General Mc Cook had retired from the Gubernatorial canvass in Ohio. The rumor prol>ably liad its origin in the fact tliat he has been so prostrated by the laltors of the canvass during the hot weather that he is obliged to withdraw from active participation in the canvass. B&~ A parcel of Louisville boys have organized themselves into a "Young De mocracy;" and the Courier-Journal has wheeled them into resolving something like the "New Departure.” When those boys get old enough to vote they will be wise enough to know that the Courier- Journal is old enough to be very foolish. t$r The West Point, Mississippi, Democrat asks; "What is the difference between the man who calls himself a Democrat and endorses the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, and the man who does the same thing and calls him self a Radical?” The conundrum is a hard one. It could be just as easy to tell the difference between the Courier- Journal and the New York Tribune. The latter endorses the amendments because they are Radical measures, and the former endorses them because they are not Democratic measures. GEORGIA NEWS. COLUMBUS. The following paragraphs ore from the Enquirer of the 23d : Our community was startled yesterday by tho announcement of the death of Mrs. S. Wilkins, who died at 2 o’clock Tuesday morning, after a very few days’ illness. The Eagle and Phoenix Manufacturing Company of this city, now have orders from D. H. Holmes and other merchants of New Orleans, for the shipment of 1,200 pairs of their celebrated cotton blankets. The Watchman of the 23d has the fol lowing : Tho drought still continues. Every thing is drying np—com, fodder, cotton, garden vegetables, and everything else. A bad prospect for turnips, potatoes, peas, mid other Fall crops. On Saturday night—or, rather Sunday morning—about 2 o’clock, the stable of Dr. H. R. J. Loug was discovered to be on fire. The firemen repaired to the place promptly, but the flames had gained such headway that they could not be extin guished. The horses escaped, but we learn a carriage was burnt up in the build ing. An excursion train, chartered by the colored people of Atlanta, reached this place on Saturday evening, and brought to our town a large number of the color ed denizens of that plcae. A big dance at the Town Hall Saturday night and various other jollifications followed. \\ r believe these sable visitors remained over until Tuesday, and, we are pleased to re cord the fact, behaved themselves, gen erally, in a very orderly manner. MACON. ' Three items from the Macon Ttiejrapk of the 23d: An interesting revival has lieen pro- grossing during the present week in the First street Methodist church, under the eloquent and powerful ministry of 1U*\. Dr. Hicks, the pastor. Our worthy and spirited Mayor re turned from Atlanta quite unwell on Monday last, hut nevertheless, endeavor ed during the day to look after the work going on at the fair Ground*. The eon- sequence was that he was taken very sick late in the afternoon and has been con fined to his lied since. The heavy job of connecting the Cen tral and Southwestern debits by nul, which has been going on for the last twelve or eighteen mouths, is now nearly finished—the w orkmen lieing engaged in putting up the last pi'-ee of trestle work across the ravine in the centre of lower Poplar street. NEWSAN. The V-ffH'kr of the 23d furnishes the following Items: The man, Hardy Smith, supposed to hare stolen the hone of Duke Cole, Esq., two weeks since, has been arrested and lodged in jaiL We are pained to learn thst Mr. Henry W. Keller died on Monday night i.., residence of his father in this chj. We learn that a negro man KrsjftEsscs.’Sji terrible monster. Onr mfornmnt state, that the whole community were in de tained pursuit ol this demon, and that he would probably be arrested. Thos. Teal, Pascal Griffis and Soasn Knowlea were recently arreted under present committed to the jail of thia eonnty, charged wuh tea killing of John Griffis, in Heard ooaaty, ea Uw lWh of UrtNovember. In «**rd toU* gmlt of these parties, we are not adriaeil. Mrs Knowles is the widowed daughter of the mardefol **•**• XAToarrov. The Preu rml Mmen'jrr of the 23d gives the appended items: The Baptist Association of the Central District of Georgia, commences its An nual session at Harmony, Putnam ooun ty, ou Friday uext, the 25th iust. We have heard some complaint of the cotton throwiug off its young bolls. One gentleman told ns that he noticed lull* as large as patridge eggs falling off. This is attributed to the cool, windy weather. We saw the rattles that came off of a suakc killed ou John li Hudson's place, in this county, lost Saturday. It wan a very largo snak«-, and had fifteen rattle- and a button. Several more of the negroes implicated in the riot of the Ktli iust... have been ar rested, tried and convicted, since our last issue, uud yet there are some who have evaded the vigilance of the officers so far. MILLEDGKMLLK. The following are from the Union: By order of Judge M. R. Bell, Ordi nary, an election will be held on the 22d of September next for Tax Collector of Balwin county. We learn that the Trustees elected for the several wards, held a meeting last week, and determined to employ four teachers, two for the white children and two for the colored, iu this city. Three months schools will be taught as recom mended by tho State Commissioner, to be paid for out of the State Fund, and if there is any deficiency it must be made up by the patrons. SAVA SHALL The Aries of the 23d has the following On Saturday a lady residing iu the southeastern portion of the city attempt ed to commit suicide by taking ou over dose of laudauum. It apjH'ars from the l»est information that the lady, who was a widow with a family of children, had some time previous married her present husband, a widower, also having several children by a former marriage. Tho old story of unhappiness between the two on account of the two families of children was again repeated, and on Saturday the wife attempted to put an end to her cxis- tency by taking poisou. The following items are from the R> publican of tho sumo date: Wo learn from an official source that the break on the Ceutral Railroad has been repaired, and tho trains are now ru ning through on regular schedule time. Two boats loaded with negroes from tho Carolina side of the river arrived here yesterday. They proceeded in a body to tho Exchange for the purpose of regis tering, iu order to vote at the coming municipal election. Fortunately notice* of their coming reached the officers, who were waiting for their arrival, and pre vented them from committing perjury. Wo were visited yesterday by another storm of wind and rain, which for a while threated to rival that of Friday last, iu fierceness. The wind blew a perfect gide from the north and west, accompanied by a light, misty rain during the morning. About 4 o’clock in the afternoon the wind shifted around to the east, and the storm abated, passing off in a heavy shower. This is doubtless the storm predicted in the weather report by telegraph last night os prevailing along the south At lantic coast. A large meeting of tho Republicans of this city was held in the fourth district on Monday night last, at which consider able enthusiasm prevailed, and a great deal of patriotsm was unbottled for those thirsting for its reviving power. J. H. Devereaux was chairman, and sjiocehes were miulc by E. E. Howard and others. Resolutions endorsing tho present admin istration, and pledging those present Ut use their utmost influence in favor of the renomination of Grant, were adopted. The meeting also endorsed and sustained the actions of Collector ltobb, and then adjourned, Rumors were current upon the street yesterday of yellow fever in the city of Charleston. His Honor, U. H. Foot man, Mayor pro tem, telegraphed to Charleston, as to the true statement of facta in connection with the report, ami received, we are informed, in uuswt-r, that a few cases of u mild type of the disease had occurred in Charleston, con fined to children, but which readily yield to medical treatment, no danger of an epidemic being apprehended. Our own city still maintains its excellent healthy condition, as will be seen by the weekly mortuary report: but two deaths among the whites, and seven among the colored, during the past week, being a decrease of five iu favor of the year 1*71, for the corresponding time. VALDOSTA. The Sun says: Jndge O’Neal has sold his residence in town, and—it is said— that he anticipates resigning his position as Jndge of the Aiapahu Judicial Cir cuit., and removing to middle Georgia.
