[Dr. Thompson mads a speech, which, by special request of Council and Mayor the reporters were enjoined from making mention.] A running fight was bod on wooden shanties within fire limits. They were ordered demolished. About this time several petitions which were granted at the opening of the ses sion were reconsidered and rescinded. This threw the proceedings to about where they commenced, consequently the report first made is valueless, except as a matter of rauuicipnl curiosity. Various amounts were ordered paid to policemen for absence. Some discussion arose as to tho correct policy of paying them Ibr absence, when not in pursuit of their legitimate business. A motion to buy a male end cert for the Firet Ward, was lost Treasure’s report for Augast is as A Man Fatally Stabbed with a Bowie Knife. About two o'clock yesterday afternoon, a most bloody aud serious stabbing affair occurred at the corner of Marietta and Brood streets, in which James Little waa futally stabbed by one Benton O'Neal. The weapon uoed was a large bowie knife, tbe blade of which measured eight inches in length. The out literally disem bowellcd Little, who fell after walking a few steps. O'Neal was arrested and carried before Justice Johnson, who committed him to jail. A preliminary trial will be bud be fore him this morning at 10 o’clock. It appear* that these men were former If partners in the painting business, bnt bad dissolved the co-partnership. In ■ottling up their old business there was ■ome disagreement, which resulted in a lawsuit. Yesterday they met at the above named corner, when an altercation occurred with this sad result. The Athens llraucb, from Union roint, is 40 miles tbe Wnabington Branch, from Barnett, is 18 miles, and the Augusta and Macon Rood, which branches off at Cainak, is 78 miles—making in all the 307 miles, Hon. Jno. P. King, of Augusta, is ths President. 8. K. Johnson, Esq., is the 8uperintondcnt;Ed. A. Werner is the local agent at this point It is an important link in the great through coast line from New Orleans to New York, via Columbia, Wilmington, Richmond, Ac. It is iu splendid condition ; seveu miles of new iron bars just been pnt down over a bad and rough space just below Carnak, and soon twenty-five miles more of new rails will bo laid iu places needed. Then the road wilt be ready and safe for the immense transportation which aa nuully traverses this great artery. The local travel over this road is good, owing to tbs populous country through which it itssses, and the numerous towns and villages along it* length. The freight earned during the post summer has not been os good ae usual on aocount of hard times generally prevail ing. For the mouth of August of this year there went down the road from thia station, freight to tho amount of 826,000.
