New York, Septemlter 21.—The gov ernment sold $0,000,000 of gold to-day, and under the pressure gold declined to 13g, but rallied to 14}. The committee has found the bond ac counts correct The evidence against Haggerty and Batch seems to bo conclusive. They were arrested upon the affidavit of Comp troller Connolly, who stated that a war rant was out for a pereon of high i>08ition who had fled. Hall has no intention of resigning, pending the investigations. Haggerty, his wife and Balch have been committed upon the charge of stealing the vouchers. Thos. Stein, beating dispatches from the British embassy, was killed in jump ing from a train. He was 83 years old. Samuel J. Tilden, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, was inter viewed to-day. Being asked if what is here entitled the ring is absolutely devoid of strength in the country, Mr. Tilden said: I do not think it has any solid strength. I told Mr. Connolly when he first sought an interview with me, on last Fridav, to ask my advice, that he might as well mako up bis mind that os a polit ical power, he and others connected with the transactions, which hod excited the S ubUo indignation, had ceased to exist.
