Tho Watchman of the 20th has the fol
lowing item:
A man calling himself Kirkjuitrick,
from Jackson connty, who had lived
some months past as a laborer on Loog
Creek, in Oglethorpo county, lately took
off the daughter of another tennnt upon
a plantation mule of Mr. S. H. Cox, and
went to Washington by night. They
were married next morning (Sunday) and
returned to the plantation Tuesday in a
hired hack, without the mule, which he
■aid would not lead and was left on the
way. After remaining with his new wife
a few days, he borrowed another mule
from a tenant and a saddle from a negro,
to bring the first back again—since which
time he has not been heard from. He is
said to have a living wife and several
ehildren in Jackson, and claims to bo an
sgliortnr in the Methodist church. He
is of good sddress, fair spoken, and ap

The Telegraph of Wednesday says:
Gen. Wm. M. Browne who, toe the
post two years, has been a citizen of this
oitr, left yesterday for Baltimore, where
he will make his home hereafter. He
has made an engagement with the Ga-
eette of that city, and will have a propri
etary as well as editorial interest in its
future oonduct. We learn that he will
still continue to have editorial control of
the Farm and Home.
With but one or two intervals, it has
rained here every day for the last twenty.
days. The reports from the cotton fields
are perfectly awfuL This weather will not
hav* to oontinue much longer to make
the destruction well nigh complete. It
does not lack much of that point now,
and in some plaees nothing at alL We
saw fifty bolls from Jones county yester
day, gathered at random, all of which
were more or less rotten—some totally
worthlesa, the others of little or no val
uation. Bat few people even dream of
the extent of tho horror of the situation
at tbs cotton crop. And the new moon
indicates that the rain is to oontinue
worse than ever.
A gentleman of this city who has just
returned from a trip over the Muscogee

to meet the great hereafter without the
shadow of a fear.
We are glad that “W. P. S.” visited
Norcroes, but regret that he did not,
while here, make a visit to “the happy
family” at tho Orphans’ Home. Had lie
conic here he would have discovered that
this is not irn “asylum" in tho dreary
sense of the term—but a home where
lovo is—a home where peace and happi
ness prevail—a home where the orpliuns
gather as equal members of one common
family and share the benefactions that
Christian people have provided for us.
Naturul parents could do no more for
us than U dune by the good people here,
who stand in the tight of father ami
mother to us. They exercise a living
parental oarc over us all, seeking our
comfort and our advancement in mind
and morals. We feel that they ure safe
guides to us, who otherwise might be
fro ward and wild. We have taith in
their counsels and we know wo have their
love.
And their good works and untiring
care are not without fruits. Last Sun
day witnessed a harvest season. Seven
teen orphans gathered around tho alter
of the church, candidates for the solemn
rite of baptism and admission into the
church. It waa an nnnsual but a happy
spectacle, and at once appeared as if God
were smiling bis approval upon tlio good
work of His people.
The services at the church were at
tended by a large, intelligent congrega
tion, all of whom appeared interested in
the solemn services.
In a year we expect to have a new
and commodious church, in whieh to
worship, and then we invite the people
to oome and worship with us, and, look
ing into the happy faces of the orphans,
understand how great a work the good
Lord is doing through his people.
