Thiubday Mohnino 8eitembeb28 SU IS -ST It UK ES. g 1fft. “Poly-marricd" is a Western eu pbouiom. Polly married is very common everywhere, where girls are Msry-ed. Mr The Albany (Go.) News pays Gen. Toombs quite s tribute. See it in an other column. Mr Massachusetts goes back on Bnt- ler; but that is not altogether unnatural, as dogs have, before, been known to de vour their own offspring. W Lewis Hanes is announced as the editor of the Carolina Era, a Radical paper, published in Baleigh. The Hones family will no doubt feel grateful to observe that he omits the y from his name. ■&. The Harrisburg Slate Journal soys : "There is no doubt the Demo cracy calculate on succeeding in Phila delphia by fraud.” It is funny to see how fearful the Radicals are of being beaten at their own game. The Cash-Book is the name of a new paper that oomes from Jackson, Missouri. That completes the list— Journal, Day-Book, Ledger and Cash- Book. Igq. Our neighbor, the Constitution, is very anxious for unity in the Democratic party—but on which side? Is it for or against the acceptance of the “fraudulent amendmcnts"as "verities" and "fluidities?' That is the only point in the case. <9" The Forest, Mississippi, Register, puts the matter in this way: "It is said the marks of the chisel made thousands of years ago upon the oolumns of rained cities, in Egypt and Persia, are fresh as if made but yesterday—the sun seeming to preserve it. Marble (Manton) in this country crumbles under the effect of a few rays of The Sue.” The Macon Telegraph says: "The Atlanta locals soy the mosquitoes are in tolerable up at that famous ‘summer re sort.’ Now, we can acoount for our mis sing stock.” True. There is not a mos quito in Atlanta that did not arrive on the Macon and Western trains; and when they get here they are the worst famished little wretches the world ever saw. Ma con blood is getting too thin, and Macon hides too thick to furnish comfortable subsistence to the most enterprising mos quitoes. The Courier-Journal says: “The man who invited Warmoth to pistols and coffee is named Llulla—Llulla with four Is. He is evidently an ’1 of a fellow.” The public appeals to the Courier-Journal to know if it has not used that same joke about os often as is consistent with a claim to originality. A good thing may bo repeated two or throe dozen times; but if repeated oftoner than that it begins to grow a little stupid, ns tho people be gin to foolishly imagine they have seen something like it before. Mf Pertinent to the woman’s social Reform movement in Washington city, the Washington correspondent of tho Louisville hedger telegraphs as follows: "Tho womnu’s movement here has now become an intolerable nuisance, oad the papers here, irrespective of party, are calling for its suppression. At the meet ing held on Friday night, for the osten sible object of considering the subject of the social evil, the speeches made by both men and women were a gross outrage on publio and privato decency. On the stand where sat the members of the Woman’s Clnb were gathered about a half dozen reclaimed courtesans. ” If the truth were known good and pure women are not mixed up with this slum movement. The movement will result in no good. This parading the foul iniquities of "the house of the strange woman” before the public, excites a morbid desire to know more about them,'and, in the end, good that may have been desired, fails to ap pear, and a great evil orops out The social reformers of Washington will be foul society instead of purifyng it GEORGIA NEWS. MONHOK COUNTY. The Advertiser of Tuesday furnishes the following: Yesterday gave us the first indication of fair weather that we have had for two weeks. A few bright days will greatly improve the "situation” in the cotton fields. We alluded in our last issue to the probable rate of taxation in this county forth* current year. It is now evident that the authorities intend to create an other "striking” fund. The official order oalls for two hundred and fifty per cent, on the State tax; or, in other words, $10 on the <1,000. The State tax is 40 cents on the <100. Thus it will be seen the (ax payers of the county have to ante to tbs tune of $14 on the $1,000. kvavstk. The Chronicle <£ Sentinel has the follow ing paragraph : The Southern and Atlantio Telegraph Company seems to make business. Its line is now finished from Washington City to Charla-ton, and is to be rapidly to Savannah and this city. On yesterday Dr. Morris, sod other gentle men representing the company, were here for the purpose of eecuring the right of way through the streets. MACON. Tho Telegraph notices tho arrival of water packed cotton in that market: The Telegraph baa the following from Xhuks county: Crops are short in Banks. WeMd a very destructive rain storm about tbe time of the Savannah gale, that prostrated our eon, and much is damaged by bdpg mbmarped by the •Wfiowing streams. The oern crop will be a hall orop or a little more, but I do not think tliat it can reach two-thirds.— Cotton ia opening prematurelv—lint light and short. Farmers are blue, and say but bolt a crop, bnt I think, with a late fall, of which we have indications, we will make two-thirds of the yield of 1870, though the rains of tho last two weeks are injuring some by causing second growth. In making your estimate you may not count ns more than one-half or five-eighths of 1870 with certainty. OOLCHBl'S. B. G. Stern, a well-known merchant, died Sunday night. A $75 cup is to be the prize st the boat race during the Columbus Fair. UIUXOGBVH.LE. The Beamier of the 25th says: On last Friday, a Collector of Taxes was chosen for this otunty to supply a vacancy caused by the absence of tb duly elected incumbent—and resulted iu an overwhelming vote for Mn L. N, Calluway, lus maj< >rity being 423 in a total of 1407 polled. Gen. 0. A. Evans, on Friday cvenin, last delivored an addross at the Goo Templars' Hall to a large audience of Templars’ and citizens. SAVANNAH. The News of yesterday has the follow &r. James Russell, who wo mentioned last week as mysteriously disappearing from his home, has turned op, all right. We learn that hon. Charles E. Holmes, a late aspirant for the Stale Senatorship, and who received three votes in the race, robbed a strange white man the other night of ten dollars in money. BAUNDEBSVmLE. The young men of Saundersvi’le have concluded that a tournament is absolutely necessary to their happiness. The Georgian of the 27th, lias.the fol lowing: A little boy got lost in the woods in this county, one stormy evening last week, and was not found until after hours of anxious search and far into the night. He was finally discovered by tho yelp ing of a dog that had accompanied him. Dr. A G. Thomas, we are gratified to learn, has accepted the call to the care of the Christian churches of this county. miscellaneous QUmertisemeiils. I miscellaneous ftbocttiscmetUs. J. IUJUUOX. | J. A. WHOLESALE GROCERS, AND ©BALERS IN GEJTEKoitj si If; *1.171 Riots WlncMy LlquorK, Commission Merchants and General Toombs and the State Road Thieves. Gratefully remembering all that Geor gia lias done for him, General Toombs ios nobly tendered his services, without fee or reward, to assist in tbe investiga tion of the State Itoad frauds, and the punishment of tho thieves. He lias al ready devoted much time and patient la bor to the matter, and will leave no stone unturned in his future efforts and deter mined purpose to unearth tho hidden treasure, aud bring the plunderers to the bar of justice. All eyes are now turned to him as coun sel for the Commonwealth, and we are proud to know that he not only appre ciates the responsibility that rests upon him, but that he hnsgoue into the inves tigation and prosecution with a high sense of duty to his grand old mother, and true devotion to her honor aud her welfare. Who doubts his fidelity or bis ability ? As true as the needle to the pole in his fealty to his people and their liberties, grand in tho conception and vindication of the right and God-like in intellect, he has given the world assurance of a man to be trusted, and there aro none to ques tion his integrity, impugn his patriotism, or disparage his power. Knaves and fools may affect disregard for his great qualities of hood and heart, but in their souls they lie and tremble with fear at their own convictions of his towering genius and power of intel lcct. Mr. Toombs seeks not to implicate or persecute innocent men—all such will find him ready and bold to proclaim their innocence and vindicate their lion- nor; but rogaos and tlicir accomplices will be unable to escai»e liis vigilance or avoid his search. They are just as cer tain to be unmasked and held up to pub lic scorn and exposed to tho vengeance of offending justice as the coming of any event within tho rango of human agency. The people may, therefore, dismiss all apprehensions that the investigation is to result in a farco, and rest contented on tho perfect assurance that their cause is iu safe hands, and will bo safely con ducted^—Albany (Go) Notes, 22d Sep tember, 1871. miscellaneous. 1,500 BUSHELS Red Rust Proof Oats AT Mark W.
