It is nothing unusual for a com petent book-keeper to make out a report in pencil l>efore making a formal report A* L. Harris, sworn, and testified that the paper 1 landed him is the one McCal- la gave him, after repeated solicitations the report of the earnings and expen ses of Western and Atlantio Hood, and so stated it when he gave it to him. That he told McCalla hb wanted the statement for the purpose of Incorporating it in the annual report. In the report was an amount of $154,000 to tho credit of L P. Harris, us Treasurer of the road. Neith er oge could - explain how that was, us everybody would know that I. P. Harris did not loan the rood thut amount of money. Witiiefes remarked to XcUalla at the time that he did not like the looks of that item. McCalla then told witness lie could make a littlo “star" At that place, and refer to it at the bottom in a note explsiuiug that the $154,000 to Harris’ credit was for bills payable. Tho wit ness did not make the note at the bottom os McCalla suggested. Both he and Mc- Colla concluded that the statement would not look right. J. O. Alexander was sworn, but before he was examined |iiu attorney objected on the grouud that Alexander was under a bond for his appearance in court, as be ing connected with this matter, and, therefore, could not be forced to testify, os being liuble to implicate himself. The Court so decided. And farther, that ev idence going to show that McCalla hod made such propositions as the above, were irrelevant, and the prosecution could not go outside of tbe charge prefer red in the warrant for his arrest. The State agaiust Cicero Lowety, charged with cheating and awindling. We learn that a dispatch was received in this city yesterday, that Rev. A. T. Spalding, the new pastor elect of the Second Bastist Church, of Atlanta, left Louisville with his family yesterday morning, and will probably arrive in this city by the afternoon train of the State Road. The Convention was called to order by Chief Engineer Patterson, of the Macon Fire Department, who wel comed the delegates, in a few pertinent remarks. Jno.
