W. A. Robinson, formerly cashier of several prominent banking houses, has been convicted of embezzlement, and sentenced to five yearn in the State prison. The pleasure yacht Jennie Leo, belong iug to Mr. Jcrrolds, of Colorado, was burned to the water’s edge in Long Island Sound, lust night. A nurse and infant of Jerrolds’ were burned to death, The fire was caused by the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. In the case of lleury Hertz, a cotton broker, who sued to recover $25,000 from the owners of the steamship Idaho, for alleged non-delivery of cotton ship ped on that steamer to parties in Liver pool, Judge Benedict to-day decided in favor of tho steumship owners, on tho ground that the cotton was shipped to parties having no right to it, and its de livery to others who wore its rightful owners, though not mentioned in the bill of lading, was correct. General Iiyan, of-Onl>aii notoriety, visited Mayor Hull to-day, with a re quest from the Executive Committee of the Cuban Republic anniversary that the May or take part in the proceedings, and make a speech. Ho declined. The Gen eral then asked permission to fire cannon in front of the City Hull, which could not be granted. CALIFORNIA. San Frakci8Co, October 6.—Mrs. Ja vier, who shot Mrs. Lake, with whom the former’s husband lived, has been in dicted for murder. A match for $20,000 between unnamed California horses is to coma off over the Sacramento course, within ninety days, and another match has been made in which San Francisco truck horses are to trot twenty miles in one hour. Mrs. Hart, the mother of seven chil dren, residing on Falsom street, was burned to death last night, by her clothes taking fire from* a kerosene lamp which she attempted to till. Numerous brilliant meteors, passing from southeast to northwest, have been observed in all parts of this State within the post week. s-e-4 UTAH. Cincinnati, October 0.—A coullngni- tion is raging near Custar, Wood county. The inhabitants aro fleeing. The inauguration of the famous bronze Tyler Davidson Monument took place to day. The city was immensely crowded. During tho spectacle, fire tiers of seats, not properly secured against scoidcut, fell, carrying their occupuuts to the ground. Three persons wero seriously, and quite a number slightly iujured. LOUISIANA. Httlelde—XWMilrr.. New OimBANe, October 6.—Mr. Lo rolites, of Bayow DeOlaire, oommitted suicide by Jumping overboard the steamer Buth. A schoonor was wrecked on laikc Pontchartraiu Tuesday, and three lives were lost.
