I® Tlio wrest of Brigham Young Tree • harem scare ’em sort of business. M?*The Courier-Journal aajs: “Wild geese are moving South." The editor of the C. J. will be along after a while. m. It is stated that Blind Tom clear ed 811,000 last year. Tom says he would be glad to Bee one dollar of the amount. *® Pennsylvania will vote next Tuesday. The canvass is lively up there, and a heavy vote win be polled. ■A, The New Orleans Picayune of Tuesday came out in an entire new drees, and looking “as fresh as a daisy. ” Png' It is becoming very evident to the minds of the “latter day saints” of Salt Lake, that thoir “latter day” is ap proaching. STATE MATTERS. New curiosities are developing every day. The latest is a lawyer who studied under John Randolph, of Ro anoke. • I®. Borne malicious fellow suggests the following epitaph for Butler: "Here 11m the 4-Ta eldMt >011, Who caused the world some bother— Hia bone* herereet; his soul has gone To call upon his lather." I®Weston, the pedestrian, will be on the grounds two days during the Macon Fair, and give exhibitons of his el-leg ibility to the title of the champion walker of America. t&~ Parton [Mr. Fanny Fern) is said to be fond of lecturing, and the only reason why he cannot moke lecturing profitable to him is, audienoea cannot bo found who are fond of hearing him lec ture. |® The New York Sun devotes an en tire column to the great national ques tion—"Does Grant get drunk ?” The public would, no doubt, manifest more interest in the question—Does Grant get sober—and if so, how long does be stay so ? I® A Newark paper, noticing the death of Henry Sanderson, the pianist, concludes with the following verse, which is possibly better in conceit than it is in theology: “If piano music's ever heard In Heavon, And Harry's faults forbid him there to go, The ministering angela will come get him— He can't be spared to go below." a® Grant has gotten miffed at Calccazy, the Russian Minister, and asks the Em peror to recall him. The Emperor is Cvar-ry that his Minister should be an Envoy so extraordinary, and asks that he be tolerated until after the visit of the Grand Duke. In the meantime Grant will refuse to see Catecazy, except in company with Alexis. 19* The Atlautic Moutldy, excellent Radical authority, estimates that, during the year 1870, the people of the United States paid, in taxes, to the general gov ernment, ten dollars and sixtwo-two cents a bead; and yet the party that collected thisjenormous tax has the effrontery to come before the people, asking support, at the ballot-box, from the produoers and working men of the oountry, who have this tax to pay. Ptg- Theodore Tilton asks, “Shall our daughters be allowed to read the works of the great masters of literature, which contain passages and allusions of sn ob jectionable character ?” There is some doubt about a correct answer to this con- nundrum; but, if the choice lay between “the works of the great masters of litera ture" and the “Life of Viotoria Woodhull" by Theodore Tilton, tho verdict would be unanimously in favor of the former, the least damaging to morals and good taste. 1® Morton, it seems, lias also been dabbling in “grease.” While ho was Governor of Indiana “he made contracts for sanitary supplies for his State troops in the Western army, which accounts were shortly after paid by the Quarter master General. In tho settling of the State account with the general govern ment, these accounts were found charged up and were again paid. This little game has been now discovered, and steps will be immediately taken to inquire into the course of this irregularity. ” BOOK NOTICES. “The Darwinian Theory,” regarding the origin of the human race, has pro voked a great variety of eomment and criticism, and has been the inspiration of any number of books and pamphlets bearing upon the same, or kindred sub jects; but, amongst them all, nothing rich er has appeared than “The Fall of Man; or, the Loves of the Gorillas”—which Claims to be “a popular scientific lecture upon the Darwinian theory of de velopment by selection. ” The brochure, covering nearly fifty pages, is from the press of Carlton & Co., New York, and is sent out in a very neat mechanical dress sad paper cover. There is a vast amount of humor in the book, and a fa cetiousness, the “ridiculoaity” of which even Mr. Darwin, himself, must appreci ate. For sale by Phillips A Crew, n. “Stolon Waters”—also published by Carlton—is a story, in verse, by Celia E. Gardner. It is advertised as “a compan ion to Owen Merideth’s Lucille,” ot which it was meant to be an imitation. It lacks every oloment needed to constitute cither a poem, or a readable story. There is absolutely nothing in the book—not even smooth versification—which is the easiest accomplishment of the poet Phillips A Crew have it Rev. Dr. O. L Smith, pastor of fit Luke's Church in Columbus, who has just been elected to the presidency of the Wesleyan Female College in Macon, and accepted tho position, tolls tho Sun that he does not intend leaving at onoe to as sume the duties of his now charge. He has made an arrangement by which Prof. Williams, who him control of the Acade my for the Blind, in Macon, will instrnct his classes for a few weeks. A Savannah young man, named Pat rick McGrath, relieved himself of “the burden of life" by severing his jugular vein with a razor. Partial insanity was the cause. Two Spalding county negroes, return ing from a corn-shucking, hod an argu ment on the way, with knives. “They carved in a way that all admired,” and one of them is now in bed, tho other in the woods. Tho Grifliu Star says: “Wo have hud our attention attracted several times of late to the immenso crows of custom ers, and especially lady customers, Ac.” The question hereupon arises, does it look well for the ladies to “crow” in a way that attracts public atttention. Columbus is building a new factory that will oommenco operations with forty looms. That is looming up very well for a beginning. John Williams, a “previous condi tion,” was caught stealing a can of lard. John plead against prosecution and of fered to compromise by taking the good, old-fashioned thirty-nine lashes. The appeal was granted and John felt as he used to before freedom. This was in Co lumbus. One bale to five acres is the most that some planters in the lower counties are counting upon, though some hope to re alize as much as one bale to four acres.
