Boston, October 28.—The f murder, of
Kate Beckon is still involved in mystery.
The Chief of Police, Sarille, requests any
information calculated to throw light up
on the tragedy. Wrapped around the
furnace wrench, with which the murder
was committed, was a copy of the Helena
Clarion newspaper, dated February 16th,
1871, published in Helena, Arkansas.
Any one sending such paper to persons
in this vicinitv should communicate with
the Chief of Folicc, as it might furnish
a cluo to the murder.

Cincinnati, October 28.—The State
Auditor has filed bills in the Circuit
Court, looking to the dissolution of the
Knickerbocker, Equitable, Garden City,
and (Commercial Insurance Companies,
these companies being bankrupt. The
aggregate assets of the Knickerbocker,
including capital stock not paid in, is
$870,000, and the losses $750,000. The
assets of the Equitable, not including the
capital stock, but including the capital
stock not paid, is $330,000; losses $300,-
000; Garden City assets, not including
capital stock, less than $300,000; losses
$2,000,000. The Commercial has rinks
to the amount of $15,000,000, with assets
exclusive of capital stock, stock paid and
unpaid, $500,000.

hint-motion of .Animals and Hints.
Philadelphia, October 28.—A bird
fancier, who had a large collection of
ligeons, Maltese cats, Guinea pigs aud
: ancy dogs, absented himself for the past
week from a shauty on Coates street,
being on a drunken spree. The police
broke open the place yesterday and found
them nearly all dead from hanger. The
health officer has taken possession und
is to abate the nuisance.
UTAH.
Trouble .lppr,hcndcd—Brigham Yeung Left.
Salt Lake, October 28.—Trouble is
apprehended when Hawkins’ sentence is
delivered. The women seem most ex
cited. The Federal officials have re
ceived threatening letters.
Brigham Young has left the city, and
it is evident tnat something important is
lending, bat the Gentiles do not nppre-
lend resistance to the law.

New York, October 28.—Rosenzweig
was convicted and sentenced to seven
years hard labor.
The bill against Tweed, Garvey, Inger-
soll, aud Woodward, nsked judgment for
over $600,000.
to have been in collusion with their pur
chasers, aud the poorest kinds of cotton
were shown us samples of the entire lot
held by the Government, the bidders
getting it by this arrangement, at the
low nrieo of twenty-nine cents j>er
pound, and subsequently selling it at the
market price, thereby clearing the differ
ence. Tho claimants, however, refuse
to base their claims at lower figures than
the market value at the time of salo, and
it is feared the Government will, in re
funding tho money, be a considerable
loser, especially now, that tho British
claims stand a chance beforo the mixed
commission of being allowed some com
peusatiou for their losses.
It is now known at the Treasury De
partment that several of these agents
have defrauded tho Government out of
large sums of money. The accounts
show this, but whut steps the Govern
ment will toko to recover its just dues
has not been decided upon.
Tho President will issue a proclama
tion for thanksgiving on the thirteenth
of November.
It is reported that Creswoll will rec
ommend the postal tolegraph system to
Congress.

instructed by the French Government.
There is no possibility of such instruc
tions.
An Allocution of the Pope is publish
ed, in which, while recognizing the
Bishops appointed by tho Italian Govern
ment, »s possessing requisite qualifica
tions of their olHces, lie solemnly re
pudiates Italy’s guarantees, and protests
against invasions of the Holy See. The
Allocution also condemns tile course of
Dr. Dollinger, aud such ns follow Ins ox
ample in warring against tho decisions of
the Ecumenical Couucil.

says the Treasury Department has direct
ed the special Treasury agent, Hale, at
Savannah, to take charge of the Custom
House at that port, ami settle up the ac
counts of the late Collector, Col. Bobl).
A new Collector will be appointed on the
return of Attorney General Akcrmnn to
Washington.

San Francisco, October 29.—A peti
tion has been sent to the President from
the citizens of Arizona, asking that Gen
eral Crook be allowed to pursue the
Apache campaign, without interruption
by the Peace Commissioners.
Eight men of the Los Angelos rioters
have been arrested. The better portion
of the community lias determined to en
force the law and punish tho rioters.
PENNSYLVANIA.
The Small Pox Its the Quaker Clip*
Philadelphia, October 29.—The week
ly health shows 85 dentl.3 from smallpox
—a slight increase over last year. The
number of cases is largely decreased.—
The disease is still confined to the 20th
ward.
SOUTH CAROLINA.

Charleston, October 29.—Four fever
deaths have been reported iu tho last
twenty-four hours. Two were reported
Saturday.
ALABAMA.
The Mnklax Committee on Their Trmvels.
Demopolis, October 29.—The Kuklux
sub-Committoo adjourned last evening,
after sitting in this place for six days, ex
amining thirty-six witnesses, most of
whom were iu relation to affairs in this
and adjoining counties. General Craw
ford, commanding the United States
forces iu Alabama, occupied one day ami
testified concerning tho condition of the
whole State, with special accounts ftom
about thirty different places.
Tho Committco go hence to Living-
stou, Alabama, whore they will stay
about a week.
NEW |YORK.
The Plight of the Prophet,
New York, October 29.—The Herahl
special from Salt Lake City, of tho 27th,
says it is stated in official ciicles that
Brigham Young is 120 miles south of
this city, with his course still onward.—
It is not kuown to what point ho is
bound. Some think ho Will leave the
country; others that he will find a refuge
iu St. George, 300 miles from here. It
is certainly doubtful whether he will ap
pear for trial, and whether the head of
the church will be seen again here until
the trouble is over.
Delegate Hooper barf gone to Washing-
ington to see the President and endoavor
to effect some basis of compromise.
UTAH.
Salt Lake, October 29.—The Mayor
of the city and four others have been.ar
rested on charge of murder. The priso
ners were taken to Camp Douglass.—
Some wild words attended the proceed
ings, but no violence.
Aaron Hyde, one of tho Twelvo Apos
tles, has fled southward to avoid arrest.
A dead body was fouud near tho city,
with four bullets in it.
Warrants are out for the arrest of Brig
ham Young and his son Joseph, on tho
charge of murdering Richard Yates.—
Tho indictments arc founded upon the
testimony of Bill Hickman, formerly a
Danite, or secret agent of the Mormons.
Hawkins, for adultery, lias been fined
$500 and seufceueed to 3 years’ hard la
bor. Notice of appeal to tbe Supremo
Court was given.
