The President:y of the Semite.
We cheerfully give place to a commu
nication on this subject, over the signa
ture of “South Georgia.” Col. Nicliolla,
whose name is therein suggested for the
Presidency of flic Senate, is a gentleman
of high character, and would, doubt
less, fill tho position -well. The same
is true of Ool Tramme'.l, JudgeItccsc and
others.
We have, however, no special candi
date for this, or any other office. The
chief object with ns is tho maintenance
and vindication of th« rights, honor and
dignity of the State, as Well os the pro
tection of tho interests of the people.
These, we trust, will be safo in the
hands of the Legislature, and we feel
that they will, if wisdom and harmony
govern their connsels and actions.
To this end wo would say, iu the or
ganization of both Bouses, let all here
personal considerations bo altogether
seoomlary lo other, and higher objects.
There will be an unusual array of talent
in both House* of the General Assembly.
Several gentlemen in each, whose names
have been mentioned in connection with
the presiding office, are well qualified to
discharge the duties of it, with effleieney
and ability.
The right course, therefore, as it seems
to us, is for the members of each House,
respectively, to moot together on
tbi-ir assembling, and, in separate
convention, after a free and full
interchange of views, iu prospect of the
entire field before them, with all the
heavy responsibilities resting upon them,
select that man, who may be found to be
most acoeptablo to tho majority.
Harmony and unanimity should he a
leading object
This is no time for Democrats, or any
well-wishers of tho country, to think for
n moment, of entering into a scramble
for either the honors or cmoluuiouts of
office. A. H. 8.
HostKJisviOLE, Ga., Oct. 23, 1871.
Alltmhi Sati: Now, that tho time' has
nearly arrived for the General Assembly
tc meet, and there seems to be some dis
cord among Democrats, as to who should
he elected President of the Senate, I
write for the purpose of making known
what I conceive to be the sentiments of
the people of this section of tho State,
on the subject, and what would doubt
less bo conducive to tho best interests of
the party, and entire State, trusting in
the old adage, “that out of a multitude
ol counsel, there is safety."
Judge Itoeso, than whom there is no
purer und liettvr man, is prominently
spoken of. So also is Mr. Hinton, Mr.
Trammell, and others. Were any of
these elected, thoy would doubtless dis
charge tho duties of their positiou
with faithfulueas aud satisfaction, llut
from what I learn, there is a want of
unity ltiHiu any of theso.
Therefore, let a man be' brought for-
ward upon whom all can anil will unite;
ouc tried and faithful, in tho pure aud
uudetlled principles o' Democracy; aud
devoted to honesty, economy aud the
ticst interests of oar noble old Common
wealth, and fully capable, in every sense,
for the position.
Such a man is the' Hon. John 0. Nioli-
olts, of Blscksliear, Senator elect from
the Third District, lie ranks to-day, in
his profession, as the first lawyer ol this
purt of tha State. Ho was a memlicr of
the Constitutional Convention of 1KU5,
and of tho Judiciary Committee of six
teen, who drafted the Constitution. In
tho last Presidential election he was
elector for Seymour aud Blair for tho
First Congressional District, receiving, if
I mistake not, the highest number of
votes of any elector in the State. At the
last election lie was the nomiuce of his
party, aud by liis untiring perseverance,
condoned with his eloquent aud couviuc-
tug arguments before the people, ho re
deemed his district from lbidioalism, and
seen ret his election by an over whelming
majority.
Ptet too party undo upon tho Hun.
John C. Nieholls, and elect him Presi
dent of the Senate, and of n surety, the
itnrii of belter ibiy« will have amir, culmf-
natiuff, in the Arv/htiuu and splendors of
a meridiem tun. South Geouoia.
P. 8.—Besides the foregoing commu
nication, we have one from a gentleman
of high standing, in Mitchell county,
suggesting Hon. Mr. Nieholls as a very
fitting man for tho Presidency of the
gensta It was received after the above
was in type, and we have not room for it
this morning. Both these letters are

which article was eopisd in the kloruinf

The President, after reading the article

cation of the powers conferred on him by
the Enforcement Act, he will not hesi
