One of the Operations ot the
•‘King.”
Governor Bullock, last spring, em
ployed a prominent firm of builders in
this city to construct oYi addition to the
Governor’s Mansion, to be used ns a
kitchen, aud to contain the upparatus for
heating the entire building by steam.
One or two gentlemen, prominently con
nected with the big moneyed operations
by which the people of Georgia have
bean so fearfully plundered, took an ac
tive part in the building, giving orders
for it to be done, directing the construc
tion and promising to see it paid for.
There was no authority of law to bav*
this building put up. It wss alleged to
be neoeumry to prevent the family from
inhaling the odors of the kitchen, and
therefore tha neceeasty for its construc
tion was very good.
This work bos not bean paid for. Bul
lock and hia friends have often beta
called upon to settle the bill, amounting
to some 88,000, and reminded of their
solemn promises while the work was go
ing on to aee that it wa* promptly paid.
It waa only the day before Buttock
left, in his flight to parts unknown, that
he wae oalled upon by theae contractors,
who had long needed their money,
They were assured by Bullock
moat positively that they would be
paid without delay in a very few days;
and that he would aee to it himself. This
promise was giveu by him with the
knowledge on his part that it would not
be performed, for he was then having hit
carpet-bag packed for bis secret flight
That resignation and slanderous address
of his were, no doubt, already written
while making these promises; and he, no
doubt, knew that he would be many miles
away from this eity when those contrac
tors would expect his promise* to be oom
plied with.
