Conley’s veto message was up in both branches of the Legislature yesterday, and, of course, the election bill was passed over bis objections. It was natu ral that be should have objections. It is his only chance to be Governor fee time, and be is loth to yield It. Thougti the points hp mokes against the bill are tnldd rfpoffthe merest fpfiblhes, he ap pears to consider them good reasons for holding fast to the good thing he has in tie Senate did not delay matters by a needless discussion of the message. The previous question was called at once, and flit taken, and the bill carried by the required majority. In the House there was some discus sion. hfr. Husstll, of Chatham, made a most aspqjhle argument in favor of the srr bm - Huspeechj “ d * Ur. Bath, of Hiller, made the ablest speech he has made during the session. It wss a calm and deliberative argument against ttw Veto, answering aH the points made by the Acting-Governor, and show ing conclusively that the bill was legal and Tight and onght to have been passed. We regret exceedingly that Mr. Jack- son, of this county, disappointed liis Democratic friends and arrayed himself wiDjtbs opposite psrtyia the considera tion of this bill. He spoke in favor of sustaining the veto and voted the same way. This occasioned a great deal of SUqUMW and was ths principal topic of conversation yesterday afternoon. Many were ready to blame him, and some were very harsh in their censure. But it must be remembered that Mr. Jackson is a young man and a very young politician. He has erred in this instance, it is true, but the lesson will probably be of benefit to him in the future. He will learn that one who hopes to gain favor as • politician cannot leap patty liny* at pleasure; but mutt stick to the lend marks and abide by the principle eof the organization with which he is allied.— Mr. Jackson fnade a most unfortunate - step, and one that is regretted by alt hie friends. Col. Hoge made a capital record for himself. His speeoh was regarded as one of the best mode during the discus sion. It was a cool and convincing ar gument against the veto, and in every way a credit to himself and to his side of the qnestion. Che House passed to Mil aver the veto by an overwhelming majority, making a good record for itself npon a most im- n portaat constitutional question. It is now a settled fact that an election for Governor will be held on the third Tuesday of the ensuing month, and by tbe time the Legislature is ready to as semble in January, a Democratic Gov ernor will be ready for inauguration.
