Bjg^Wlien the English telegraphers struck it was not a “stroke of lightning. BgU Things are “warming up” in France, notwithstanding the thermome ter is reported 10 degrees below zero. B&* General amnesty will hardly com mand the attention of Congress before the holidays. _ B&- “Resigning young men” are now’ annoyed about the nobbiest things in cards for New Year’s calls. lgfc,A Louisville woman attempted to kindle a fire with kerosene. The coro ner’s jury “returned a verdict in accor dance with the facts.” BcHT The New York World last week published a very elegant obituary of the Prinoe of Wales. The Prince will prob ably live to read it, IgLAn effort is being made to induce Hon. John A. Bingham to oppose Sher man, for United States Senator from Ohio. They think Bingham can bang him. XKa^The Internationales are to attempt a parade in New York next Sunday. This will give Fisk another opportunity to immortalize and cripple himself by running out of the way of danger. BgL-The Washington Chronicle actually admits that colored schools ought to be separate and distinct f rom .the whites. The Chronicle appears to have no regard for Sumner’s social and Civil Rights theo ries. _ ^ BSP* The unmitigated cuss of the Sa vannah News is the only individual who could possibly have remarked that talented manumitted citizen of Alabama committed suicide the other day by stand ing too close to a mule.” Be&* The latest disposition of Fish is to send him to the Court of St. James, vice Schenck. It is to be hoped the Gov ernment will not send him as a fair sam ple of the best Fish the American market affords. _ JBQrAt the Grand Duke’s reception in Boston, James Russell Lowell, refer ring to the late purchase of Alaska, said our relations with Russia are now of the most cordial and intimate kind, for the Emperor has made us tbMpepen. a#»ijis ploye JBsaT* Akerman, it is said, has had the broadest kinds of hints that his legal acumen is no longer absolutely essential to the management of the law depart ment of the Government. But he is not delicate and does not take a hint well. A Vermonter always needs to be spoken to plainly. Bay* It is said that Graut would never havo recommended general amnesty in his message, only ho had the best of as surances that any amnesty bill that might be passed should not bo general. It was a good campaign card to play, and he knew it, and used it, though amnesty is the last thing he wants. The papers have, for a week, been laying plans by which the people of England might escape the troublo likely to ensue upon the death of the Prince of Wales. The Prince, however, may, pos sibly, provide a means of avoiding those troubles altogether by getting well. The thing is not improbable. BGF The Washington Correspondent of the Savannah News, under date of the 12th, telegraphs the following of Georgia matters and men: Akerman’s resignation has been placed at the disposal of the President. Lochrane, signing himself Chief Jus tice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, has written a letter to the President in favor of Robb. He says that there is no cose against the latter. The effects of this letter are neutral ized, however, by information conveyed to the President* that Lochrane is em- yed as Robb’s counsel. , E. Bryant has arrived here. He comes on for the purpose of working against Blodgett’s admission to the Senate. Chamberlain’s Ku-klux dispatch has created considerable feeling here, and will be used by Morton in favor of seat ing Blodgett Blodgett’s friends are moro confident to-night, but can give no substantial reason for it. The confirmation to-day of OlarR and Wilson, the first as Assessor and the Sec ond as Collector of the First Georgia Distriot, was a great triumph ove/ Krzyzanowski, who has been working hard to defeat them, especially Clark. It is rnmoied here to-night that Judge Erskine will have to give way, in order that the President may provide a snug place for Akerman. Ex-Senator Wil liams succeeds Akerman as Attorney- General. GEORGIA MATTERS. The Gwinnett Superior Court has been postponed until March, in consequence of sickness in the family of Judge Da vis. Savannah is rallying all her re sources to raftle a music box. Hams •aye he most have it, for if there is any organ on which he can play it is a music box. Savannah has had a turn with the non- explosive. They thought a cannon had “bursted” in their midst A Catholio Fair is progressing in An- gusto. Rome registers 610 voters, of whom 395 are white, and the balance motley. The Athens Watchman marches up with a capital dog story, as follows ; Thehouseof Mr. Jesse Gann, wo learn, was lately burnt together with all the furniture it contained. The fami y made a narrow escape, and would have perished in (he flames, probably, but for the re markable instinct of a dog. The faith ful creature, seeing the danger, not only set up a loud and ferocious barking, but by jumping against the door finally suc ceeded in awaking Mr. G., who had barely time to save the children from the flames.
