Closing Exercises of tire South
ern Female College.
LaGkanoe, December 15.
Last night the closing exercises of the
Southern Female College came off at the
beautiful new chapel of tbe institute. They
oonsisted of a rendition of tbe charming
little operetta ot “Leila," in which the
music class of the college acted the prin
cipal characters. The wholo affair was
conducted by Miss Bailie Cox, the ac
complished daughter of tho Principal,
and was enthusiastically reoeived by tbe
large audienoo in attendance,
In tbe short space allowed in your col
umns it wonld be impossible to particu
larize, and this fact I regret On the oc
casion of tba closing exercises of the
Spring term I bad the pleasure of being
present, and then remark, d upon the
novel and charming featnro of several
beautiful young ladies executing the most
difficult pieces upon violins. Last “ J - u *
this was repeated with ten fold
upon those present
Mies Eula Ferrell, as “Laila,” was a
charming little fairy, and did her part so
well thut she gained the applause and
hearts of the entire audience.
Tbe term clc ed with a roster of one
hundred and twenty-five names, and this
number was attained under considerable
difficulties in the way. Now Prof. Cox
has completed bis new college building,
and the next term oilers unsurpassed in
ducements for tbo eduoatioa of young
ladies.
Prof. Tools is an invaluable adjunct to
tbo institution, and I repeat what was
said last summer of Prof. Suliirmaker,
that he is one of tbe best musicians in
tbe South.
Tbe performances lastni^bt were high
discouraged and sick st heart when we
reflect that criminals guilty of the high
est crimes known to the penal oode, some
of whioh it is a shame to apeak, are
turned loose upon the oountry without
merited punishment by Executive par
dons. For the last faw yean it reruns to
be tbe rule that it a person obarged with
crime however wicked or infamous, if be
oan but command money or is supposed
to hs of some political importance, ho is
sure to receive sn Executive pardon either
before or after conviction.
The Eatonton Press and Messenger,
says: On Tuesday night last, about
thirty-two Swedes arrived at this place.
Seventeen of this number are taken by
citizens of oar own county, and the
bal an oe by persons in Jasper county. Mr.
Foss, tbe agent, brought one hundred
end thirty to Augusta, ell lor Georgia.

Hbsvt Uobbsuit.— From Mr. Thomas
F. Turner, conductor on tbe Maoou and
Augusta Railroad, we gather the follow
ing: It seems that a day or two ago Mr.
David W. Dickson, tbs well known plant
er of Hanoock county, was robbed of $8,
000 in gold and silver coin. A negro named
Warren was suspected of having commit
ted the robbery, bat hs disappeared the
morning after it was committed. Tuesday
this negro got on the pres ringer train on
the Macon and Augusta Road, to Warren-
ton. Mr. Turner bad been given bis de
scription, and requested to keep a sharp
lookout for him, and, after satisfying him
self of the identity of the thief, he promp
tly arrested him. Warren nr searched,
and on his person was found$142 25 in
silver and 639 in gold, besides several
papers belonging to Mr. Dickson. He
was bronght to this city, and delivered
up to tbe proper authorities He will be
sent back to Hancook county for trial.—

Akerman was summarily disposed of
to-day. His resignation vj received last

Akerman gives out that he will not ao-
cept the vacant Judgeship in Florida,
but will return to Georgia after tbe tenth
of January, the day fixed for tbe surren
der of bis offioe.
Georgia gains two Representatives by
the Apportionment bill whioh passed the
House to-day.
