Attempt at Rape.—A lady, Mm. Jones,
firing in Ihe Second Ward, waa assaulted
on Monday evening about dusk by a
daring negro, who violently attempted to
outrage her peraou. The lady was hosti-
by passing Itoougli auuto woods between
her house And a neighbor's when the ne
gro seized her by tho throat, and placing
a pistol to her taoe, threatened to shoot
her dead if she raised an alarm. Hating
released herself from his fiendish grasp
she pleaded for moroy, uud finally per-
Miudcd the villain to desist from his pur
pose. Efforts were made forthwith to
arreet him, but it was impossible for Mrs.
Joues to give a description that would
identify him. He is yot at large.
Road Bteamem.—In oar last, we made
some notice of the fact that tho legisla
ture, at its last session, had chartered a
company to introduce Road Steamers,
for hauling road cars or wagons over our
common roads.
The use of steam over common roads
has long commanded the earnest atten
tion of first-class engineers, and much
time, labor and money Lave bet n expen
ded in experimenting. It is believed
that at last the mutter is reduced to prac
tice, and that steamers can be used suc
cessfully on all roads where the grade is
not more than one foot in twelve.
In a late number of “The Sdentijk
Atntrtean," we find an engraving nod full
description of the Road Steamer, with
taain o( wagons attached—
the invention of R. W. Thompson, of
Edinburg—a thoroughly educated engi
neer, as well as a man of large means,
which enable him to continue experi
ments and perfect his invention, till its
practicability is demonstrated and it has
been approved by the most eminent en
gineers in the Old and New World.
The British Government appointed a
commission of military men to examine
these road steamers with the view of
adopting them in the War Department.
The examination was most severe and the
report so favorable that a number Lave
been ordered; among others, one to carry
stores np the rock of Gibraltar, the in
clines being one in six. Varions other
European governments have, after care
ful examination, ordered tbem for draw
ing heavy artillery, and for other purpo
ses. Over seventy rood steamers are now
in order at the works in Great Britain for
India, Australia and other countries.
It is said that a road engine has never
before met the demaud for drawing heavy
trains of wagons on common roads.
Adhesion, without too great weight;
traction, without destroying the roads;
gearing, which would not break when
jolting over rough pavements, and steer
age which would enable tbe engine to be
easily turned, were some of tho absolute
requirements of a practical road locomo
tive.
Traction engines of enormous weight,
having rigid tires, are used for steam
plowing in England. This weight is
necessary for securing sufficient udhe-
sion. Some have been made with teeth
in the face of tho wheels to give them
adhesion, but this dostroys roads when
drawing heavy loads. Inability to use
springs—thus causing the wear and tear
of gearing parts; and the time oonsumed
in turniog corners, present some of the
difficulties which have been in the way.
The main feature of Mr. Thompson’s
invention consists of an elastic tiro made
of vulcanized rubber. The driving
wheels aro about five feet in diameter,
having a twelve inch face, with flanges at
each edge. On the face of this wheel,
between tho flanges, is placed the rubber
tire, one foot wide und live inches thick.
A chain of steel plates one foot long and
three and a half inches wide, surrounds
tho rubber. This ring or chain of steel
plates hus no rigid connection with tho
rubber tire, and the rubber tiro boa no
rigid connection with the face of tho
driving wheel. The steel plates and the
rubber can move or slip rouud independ
ently of each other, and without the con
currence of tho inuer iron rim of tho
wheel. This is u very remarkable com
bination. It enubles the rubber to slow
ly creep round the wheel, so that in going
a mile with a heavy load in tow, the rub
ber tiro will bo found to have crept once
around the iron tire. To this ingenuous
device is duo tbe indestructublc nature of
tho tire. An enormously sudden and
heavy strain upon the soft tire might tear
it, hut the slight slip saves it Tho weight
upon tho rubber tires causes them to
conform to all tho irregularities of tho
road, nud thus is iusured adhesion and
traction, which cannot be obtained in the
alight line of contact with smooth rigid
Fitoraaaoiuauu* of Modern Lancia
oes in the Htate University.—Mr.
Cyprian Wilcox,—appointed to the Chair
of Modern Longuages in the University
of Georgia, to succeed Dr. M. J. Smead,
deceased—was born in Hancock county.
He is about fifty years of age. After
graduating at Vale College, with distinc
tion, lie went Ui Europe to make liimadf
master of Foreign Languages. Becom
ing proficient, he has been a teacher for
ubout twenty years—teaching in Europe,
residing at various points, Berlin, Mad
rid, Brussels, and in Switzerland. From
his known purity of character, and fitness
by attainments, classes of American
youth were sent to him—teaching also
foreigu youth, where he resided, the
English language. Thus he has hud pe
culiar opportunities and long experience
to make himself eminently qualified to
fit him for the Chair to which he has
been invited. He married, some dozen
or more years ago, whilst on a visit to his
native State, Miss Bmythe, of Augusta,
the accomplished daughter of Mr.
Bmythe, once editor of the Augusta
Chronicle and Sentinel, and several years
postmaster of that city. He is thus fully
identified with the interests of Georgia.
The young men of Georgia are presented
a rare opportunity of learning German,
French, Italian and Spanish languages.
The congregation of St. Stephens’
Chapel, will huvo a Christmas tree for
their Sunday School, in their Hall, on
the corner of Walton and Forsyth
streets, cm Thursday, 28th inst., nt 7
o’clock r. m. All, and especially the
children and congregation of Bt. Phillips
Church, arc cordially invited to be pres
ent Geo. Macaulet, Rector.
Opera To-Night.—To-night begins a
short season of four nights of the Ger
man Opera at DeGive’s Opera House.
Only once since the war has Atlanta been
favored with German opera, hence the
people are all the more eager to welcome
it again. The Formes-Hubelmann troupe
is distinguished ns one of the finest com
binations uow traveling, aud its coming
to this city has been praccoded by some
of tho most flattering notices at tho hands
of Southom critic**, ever given to any
troupe. We have no doubt that the
music-loving portion of this community
will be greatly delighted.
Reward op Merit. — John Talbot,
driver for Tallulah Fire Company, was,
on Christmas day, presented with a hand
some silver watch and gold chain. The
watch bore the following inscription:
“Presented to John Talbot, for efficien
cy, by the officers of Tallulah Fire Com
pany, December 25th, 1871.” This was
a most fitting testimonial to a most ex
cellent employee of the company, aud
shows that “tho gallant boys of Tallu
lah” arc os prompt in acknowledging
faithful service os they aro in rendering
it when called upon. Mr. Talbot may
wear his watch with pride, for so tangi
ble a compliment from such a source, is
something to be proud of. Men who aro
promptest in the discharge of duty are
the quickest tojdiscover promptness, und
the readiest to reward it

An important feature is claimed in its
ability to run over soft ground aud mud
dy roads. The clastic cushion prevents
injury to the roads; and acting us springs
or buffers between too rough load and
the gearings, saves the machinery from
dam ago.
The boiler is vertical ami tubular,
made entirely of steel. The coal break

supply. The speed varies from two aud
a half to six miles per hour for freight
steamers, and ten miles per hour if con
structed specially for passeuger service.
With our vast country, so much of
which must be, for many years, without
railroads, they will bo of groat use for
mines, transportation companies, feeders
to railroads and for general carrying pur
poses. In plowing the grain fields of the
Great West, and the sugar nud cotton plan
tations of tho South, they will find n wide
field of usefulness. Harnessed to one of
Williamson’s gang plows they turn seven
furrows of eight inches depth aud twclv
inches width with perfect cose.
