The following faets are from the En quirer of Wednesday: There were two mm killed in Colom- bns at a 1st* hour Monday night, and a third was mortally, if not aerionaly, wounded. The first of these unpleasant affairs occurred Monday night, in which policeman Charlie Barrow received his death at the hands of George Layfield, a young man, wlio, about a week since, ar rived in the city from St. Louie Young Layfield, while under the luflueuce of liquor, had been guilty of improper lan guage and threats, at the store of Mr. L » 51,170 oo 48,370 50 Western Rallr bonds 10,600 00 Diviceud Central Rail road in June 230.000 00 Gov't tax on same.... 6,250 00 Dividend Southwestern Railroad In June.... 169,205 95 Gov't ti Dividend Central Rail road this day 250,000 00 Gov't Dividend Southwestern Railroad this day.... Leaving a balance of $ 9,980 96 The business of jour own road, os well os those issued bj yonr company bos fal len off very muoh during the past year. This has been caused by a very material reduction in tbe cotton crop tributary to our rood, end also by fierce competition from other lines of transportation which have been opened. 'These lines have not only taken some of the busiuess that has heretofore passed over your road, but they have reduced the rates of transpor tation in some coses below remunerating prices. fcJuch competition would only produce a healthful result if fc there was business in the country to support more thau one line; but, with the limited amount of tratfie, it must result disas trously to some, if not to all, that are contending for the business. Seeing that your road would be obliged to encounter this competition, the board endeavored as far as possible to protect your interests, uud to this end tne Macou and Western liaiiroad has cepn leased. By the term of this lease the stockhold ers iu that company are to receive the sumo dividends that are paid to the stock holders in your qompauy Liberal os these terms uro, there were parties who sought to detoot the lease, and for that purpose applied for and ob tained an injunction. This injunction, after having been sustained by the court below, was carried to the Supreme Court of the State, and by it dissolved. Iu view of tho competition referred to, and the fact that the country does not ufford sufficient busiuess at low rates to support all the linos tout are contending for wh&l there % the board is obliged to acknowledge tuat the pioepcrity off yonr road may be seriously damaged for sc ac time to come. These competing linet must, however, sooner or la 1 , find it absolutely necessary to charge icmuaera- tiug rates ia o. ler to reader ‘ em self- sustaining, and when that 'i done, it is confidently believed that the pre q cts of ydbr line* will brighten. Tbe election for municipal tha city of liome for 1872 has resulted I in tho election of the "People’s Ticket,” As will be seen from the following card, Colonel W. A.
