A couple of duys since a Paris telegram stated that the Pope had advised the French Bishops to support Cbambord. As tho dispatch has not been confirmed, we think there is reason to doubt its accuracy. It is not likely that the Pope would take any such step, and tho fact that the dispatch originated in Paris—the centre of canards—is sufficient reason to be careful in giving credence to it. i! Address d*c27-wly J. G. GIBSON, Eaton ton,*Oa Death of Dr. Coskerry. Tho death of Very Rev. Dr. Coskerry, Administrator of the Arch-Diocese of Baltimore, following so closely upon that of Archbishop Spalding, leaves that Dioceso without a head. Tho loss of these prelates, both of whom stood so high in the Catholic Church, is very se rious, and cannot be very readily filled. They wero men of mark aud strong in* telloct. Many speculations arc indulged in as to the probablo successors to these posi tions. The most general impression seems to be, however, that Right Rev. Dr. Bailey, Bishop of Newark, will suc ceed to the Archbishopric, while Right Rev. Dr. Lyucli, Bishop of Charleston, will hecomo Primate, and, probably, be invested with tho Cardinulute. Tliitl Savannah Affair. A day or two ago all the Suvauuuh pa pers gave an account of a cow-hiding affair which occurred in that city last Saturday, in which an Atlanta man figur ed to the discontent of a citizen of Sa vannah. • Though no names were men tioned in connectiob, yot 'the papers of that city .colored tho matter a little in their own favor. We learn from a gen tleman who witnessed the transaction that tho Atlanta man did not draw a pistol until several blows had been struck with the raw-hide, and even then ho did not draw it until the Savannah mail made a motion, ns if to draw one. Thcro was no grappling in the case; on tho con trary, tho Atlanta man used his best endeavors to get out of tho way. The cow-biding took place about 4 o'clock in tho afternoon; hcnco thcro was plenty of time for an interview' with the Atlanta mau, as the train did not leave for three hours later. There must have been some aggravated causo for this action on the part of the Atlanta man, as he is believed here to bo a very quiet, law-abiding, unobtrusive gentlemen, and a good citi zen. Many of our youug writers seem to be afflicted with tho passion for notoriety which fools mistake for fame, and tho wise regard as a misfortune. Iudeed, this passion is fast becoming the bane of our civilization, and tho man who caonot succeed in getting lionized docs his best to get itemized. Whoever yields to the pernicious passion gets victimized in tho end. The quiet performance of duty, wherever one’s lot may be cast, is a hun dred times more wholesome, satisfying and noblo than this vulgar itching to be talked about, and the iucessant pulling at the coat-tails of society to attract its no tice.—Golden Age. Mr. Chan dler said his frank on these documents was a forgery ; bat, as the whole Liberal Republican movement was a fraud, he was rfot surprised that those who were en gaged in it resorted to forgery.
