Gordon waa elect ed on the fifth ballot by n majority of ninalean. It will also be seen that Gen eral Gsrdon and Mr. Stephens were the leading candidates throughout the eon- teat. Intense Interest created considera ble exeitemont daring the progress of the two last ballots: and even in the last ballot, while members wore changing their Vbiea, it seemed difficult to tell who would be the successful candidate, General Gordon or Mr, Stephana; bat, just at the beat of the oon- teat, whoa the aoalen aeemed almost equally balanced, » number of the Itopubllonna, and n few others earns to the rescue of Gane.al Gordon and se cured hla election by changing their votes in hla favor. In the election of Gen. Gordon, the people of Georgia will be represented in the United States Senate by a chivalrous gentleman, ageimt whose reputation, privately or punlioly, naught oau be said. It waa n oortcat between military dir- tinotion and civil qualification; there waa no principle involved aa Gen. Gordon, in the lata oontest, stood with Mr. Stephens upon the Georgia platform, and refused to aanetloa the Oiuoinnati platform, though ha supported Mr. Greeley. If Gan. Gordon eball illustrate Georgia as brilliantly in the Sonata Chamber as ha did upon the field, none will taka more pride in hie career than Tun Bun; and none will more readily sustain him, we doubt not, than Mr. Stephens who waa his chief competitor in the contest of yesterday. TITS CBSD1T MOBILISE SC AS DAL. Gan. Farnsworth pat tha spurs into Gen. Mr. Farnsworth did not hood the objeot he had in view by offering the resolution, wbioh is to diroot attention to the fact that Oeneral Butler received six thou sand dollars as oonnscl for the Credit Mebi'ier, and to have it go npon the rcoorils of the House aa a part of the history of the member from Essex. Tho virtuous Forney, in writing npon this subject, says that gentlemen in Con- gross who hare boon investing in the Credit Mobilier cannot “brara U out” on the assumption that they had a right to bny into it. “We desire to give them the fnU benefit of honeot motives,” aays Forney, “bat it is proper tossy that any attempt to lay down the law that a Sena- tor or Bepreaentative can beoome inter- sated in schemes before Congreaaa or u an attorney can go before tha depart ments and courts and take fees to sup port or oppose measure a on which he has voted, or may vote, will be indignantly repudiated!by the people." nr* Ft MSB ASSOCIATES. A case of considerable importance has jnst been decided in the United Htab s Circuit Court iu Equity—that of William C. Bonn, assignee in beukrnptcy, against Louis E. Amsinck and others. The action was a bill in equity brought by William C. Bean, assignee in bankrupt ojol Charles B. Kintzing, ot St. Louis, Mo., to recover the sum of 810,275 83 from tho defendat Is. It is alleged that Kintzing A Oo, became insolvent on tho fourteenth day ol February, I860, and that a compromise waa made, dated the fifteenth day of Febrnary, 1809, by which the creditors were to accept 70 per cent, in three equal pejmetito at six, twelve, and eighteen mouths, with intorest, for which tho notes of the insolvent firm were to bo given. Tho insolvent firm owod the defendants at the date of the compromise the sum of 882,501 05, and the defendants signed to compromise agreement in common with tho most of the other creditors of Kintzing A Co., but with the seoret un derstanding that Kintzing A Co. were to discount their compromise notes far an amonnt equal to 00 por oent. in cash of the indebtedness of Kintzing A Oo. to defendants, upon defendants signing the oompromiso agreement, and which was done. Judge Blaobford decided that in nil compromises of this naturo between creditors tbero must bo open and fair dealing, and that no snoh seoret under standing ns was had in this eoso will be upheld either in law or equity; that the assignee in bankruptcy, as representing all the ereditois, can maintain a suit to reoover money so paid, under section 14 of the Bankruptcy act, and that the com plainant must have judgment for the full amonnt for which the notion is brought, with the interest and oosts.—,V. Wo preeume he wiehre lo be in formed concerning the original derivation and aao of tho torm. Wo will endeavor to explain it. Tho "Credit Ponder" haa long noon tho general title in Franco for associations that advance mono; on laud ed or immovable aecuritie«. Tho "Credit nobilior”waa the namo given to a power- fnl corporation, organized in Franco in 1852, for kdvancing mono; on move- ble proparty. The mime wan adopted cTedently with the purpose of affording n ready definition of the aubjeot of the association. The "Societo Generate de Credit Mobilier" became a gre.t and profitable enterprise. It had special privileges under its charter. It ansisttd materially in tho construction of rail- way* and tho promotion of mining Bohcmca. Among other outorpriaoe in which it waa notably interested were the Government loan on aoconnt of tho Rus sian war, tho Grand Central Railway Company, and the Ooneral Omnibus Company of Faria. At one time, it ad- vanced 250,008,000 francs, and at another timo 375,000,000 franco, to the French Government, its btieinese was bo great in 1856 that it declared a dividend of 40 per cent, on its capital. Whilo it was manifestly the means of doing mnch good in France, it eventually failed. The introduction of tho terms "Credit Fourier” and "Credit Mobilier” into America aro duo to Mr. Gecrgo Francis Train, lie established n " Credit Pon dor" with Omaha lands, which he hawked about the country some years ago. Ue S tve the name ot “ Credit Mobilier of rnorioa" to a corporation with universal privileges, which was organized in l'eun- aylvania. It waa appropriated by Messrs, (lake., Ames, Duraut 1c Co., to serve as the party of tho thud part in the fa mous “triplicate agreement,” by which tho maoogirs of tho Union Facifiio Railroad lot ont tho contract of buildiug the road to themselves, in payment for which they modestly took tho road itself, all the united States bonds, all tha United States lands, ate., at e profit of over 1,000 par cant., on aa entirely ficti tious capital. This is what "Orcifit Mo bilier” means iu the modern American and Congressional use ot tho word. The titloisnot inappropriate.
