THE ATLANTA SUN 1m. daily and weekly. THE SUN PUBLISHING CO. Hon.AJE. STEPHENS POLITICAL editor. THE SUN. VOL. Ill •« DMA MIW WONDERS OF IRE MOON, from th. #n nch ioD“ (loniuil, by Mm M. a Bus. ud edited by luu Miickel. M.w York; Sc.ib.u, Aui.tboig A Co. Atknte: M. Lti.i A Oo. One of tbs ohief objeotioos to works on aoienoe is that they an always so heavily written, so abetroee in thought and so musty in dry detail, as to repel l be student whose perseverance is not equal to his need of knowledge. This faet has become so apparent of late years, ihatmany writers have abandoned the old style and endeavored, so far as the suojeot would admit, to popularise it aud thus open new avenues of pleasure, as well as instruction, to the masses. Abbott hss been one of toe most suocess- ,u) in this line; while the sorld owes to the Chambers, of Scotland, a debt of gratitude for breaking through the laws of custom, and making the study of matters of faot as entertaining ns usefuL The work under notice (wbioh does credit to both author and publisher,) is a valuable and qnaint addition to our as tronomical literature; and unlolds the mysteries of the moon in suoh an inter esting manner as to onptivate the atten tion of the reader. Those of us who have never studied the “ orb of night" have opened to ns by this work a pleas ant study, claiming tire attention of the marvellous as well as the searoher after truth. The work can be had of M. Lynch A Co. _ SPIRIT OP TUB OSOROU PRESS. [Our State cotemporaries are pub lishing but few leading editorials on publio questions, and hence we hare found nothing for a day or two of important interest to publish from them in our columns under the above caption.] The bond question still, however, is under discussion by some of our cotemporaries. The Atlanta Consti tution made a statement a few ago to the effect that —tnere are vital facts connected with the Bullock bonds that necessarily the Bond Committee could not get, because they could not secure the witnesses. These facts will throw a flood of light on the bad bonds, will show up toe dark practices of some of the bondnolders, and enlighten us as to the real innocents, in whose equities alone is there any merit which the State should recognize. The Augusta Constitutionalist, in referring to our neighbor, knows of “nothing which will justify the State in reopening the question and involv ing us in fresh trouble and expense. It has heard of no ‘vital facts’ which the Bond Committee was un able to discover that any other Com mittee will be able to ob'ain.” In conclusion the Constitutionalist says: We assert again that no further investigation is needed or desired. The wnole scheme of fraud and vil lainy has been thoroughly “probed,” the bona fide aod the “innocent” purchasers have been discovered, and the “equities” have been adjusted. The report of the committee was re ceived, its recommendations calmly discussed and almost unanimously adopted. Let the matter rest just where it is. Our neighbors of the Constitution thinks that it is to the State’s inter est to settle the matter definitely after proper inquiry; that it is the imper ative requirement of the State’s honor to inquire properly before definitely settling the matter, and comes to the conclusion that— An investigation docs not carry with it the pledge of acceptance of any proposition. It simply shows our willingness to do right The man or journal that opposes a fair hearing by the State to her creditors puts her in a false position. And when it is done on the ground that our people can’t be trusted to resist corruption in the inquiry, the State’s selt-im- posed degradation is then complete. The Brunswick Appeal, in an arti cle on the Brunswick and Albany Railroad, discussing the litigation and claims against that road, says that the bondholders, having lost hope of securing their advances from the State of Georgia, claim that the property should be turned over to them, as they furnished every dollar heretofore expended in its construc tion. The Appeal further asserts that —before the question ol priority is determined, we cannot reasonably hope for a termination of this im portant suit, save by compromise. Unless each interest—(the lien and general creditor, the stockholder aud bondholder)—agree to agree, it will be seen at a glance, that the case can be prolonged and its end delayed by either party at interest, for perhaps even years. _ ATLANTA, GEORGIA. WEDNESDAY. APRIL 9, 1873. NO. 870. surrounding country. O140 hundred hands will soon be employed upon it We shall give nctioe of its progress and prospects from time to time. Oar lumi nary is in the ascendanoy here. We left this plaoe with many attruo tionSf 00 the night train, with that oolig- ing conductor, Ospt Edwards, for Athens. We arrived at daylight, and found a fine span of horses and phaeton at the dsp it, quite ao improvement upon the old plan of getting to the hotel. This outfit is owned by Messrs. Gann A beeves, whose card may be fouad in the Athena direct jry, in another oolumn of Th* Son. They keep constantly on hand a fine lot of horses and vehicles for hire and sale. Persons wishing to lire or pnrohase would dr> well to give them call. On our arrival we were sorry t_ learn the old proprietor of the Newton House, Col. Wha r ton, had departed this life the Friday before. He was well fit tea for his business, a good citizen, 1 member of the M. £ Church, a Mason, and an Odd Fellow.. Hisson-in.-law, Mr. Conrad, who was his clerk, is carrying on the business, and we hope he may be cqme the proprietor. His bouse ii worthy of praise, and we trust will oon tinue to receive the patronage of the public. We called at the office of the Athens Watchman, and found our friend, the worthy editor, Ool. Ohnsty, at nU post, fallj recovered from the effects of jte night’* lodging with three or f »ur t e- tween two and three hundred pounders, not all in the same bed, but all in the same room, at the Walton Court. W* were glad to lo trn his paper ha j a good circulation and is doing well. We abo called to see those gentlemen of the quill, OoL Grant and his- son, of the North East Georgian. We spent some agrees- bl moments in thetv sanctum. We were informed their paper is rapidly I (rowing in favor and i> creasing in oirou- ation. Both the Watchman and North E ist Georgian ore good advertising me diums. We learned the University is in u flour isbing condition as also the Lucy Oobb Institute aud Madam Sosnowski’s Select School for young Ladie 1 are ail doing well. ’Tie with feelings of pleasure that we mention the business men Of this plaoe. There is no town in Georgia that oau boast of a nigber toned or more intelligent class of merchants. Among them we would notice Mosers. Sumiuej ANewtou, who do a large business iu hardware, ag ricuhural implement*, etc.; also Messrs. Cnilds, Nickerson A Co., whoarelaig* dealers in hiidwaie, mill findings, agri cultural impemeuts, Chicago farm pumps, etc. We noticed Lome fine cir cular saws, of which they sell a great many. We would mention our old fneod A. S. Dorsey, who is a large dealt r in dry goods, groceries aud assorted merchan dise, and who is aUo agent for the justly celebrated Sou Fowl Guano. The above are all reliable firms, whose cards may be lound in the columns of The Sum. There are many other mer chants in this plaoe who do a large busi ness, whose cards we should be pleased to insert in Th* Sum. dcprke’s opera hall s an extensive building recently erocted at a cost of above forty thoumiud dol lars. The Hull is large and commodious aud will seat eight huudre 1 persons. Toe statue, its paintings', scenery, aud indeea all its appointments are said to be the most complete of any in the State uud have been gotten up at great expense. Troupes in passing through Georgia would do well to visit Athens, whose pop ulation is near six thousand. The citi zeus are refined and intelligent. Music und the drama, indeed all the liberal arts would be fully encouraged here Before closing our letter wo would re turn out thunks to one of Athens nobie- muu, Dr. J. A. Hunicutt to whom we ore under many obligations for favors shown. We regret we could not accept his invita turn to visit him at his elegimt residence in Cobbhum. We were happy to meet oar young irieud the Hon. A. Mitchell, who is look ing very well. Littls did we think that the iasy mannered school boy of a few years ago would rise so rapidly as to be called to fill important posts of trubtand houor at so early an age. Gov. Hmitn has manifested good judgment in ap pointing bim lo fill the place he now oc cupies, that of Judge of the County Court. The appointment has given en tire satisfaction. Our efforts in behalf of The Sun for this wee* will now olose and we hasten home to enjoy aSibbath day's rest be fore we again announce ourself On the Go.
