Have been of late no lack of indica-

.by tire monarchiata of Europe, and
that the influence of the “ Model Be-

longer so much dreaded by tbe adhe

and intelligent among our own peo
ple are coming to the conclusion that
there must be something radically
defect ive in a system of government
which, under the name of a Repub
lic, lacks none of the despotism of
kingly prerogative, and under which
there is so little security for public
tranquility, life, liberty and prosper

Ip noticing that the treachery of
Capt. Jack, the leadorof the Modocs,
(which culminated in the death 01
General Cauby and Mr. Mescham), is
received throughout the land with u
cry for vengeance—vengeunce, speedy
and bloody, the Savannah Advertiser
says, referring to the order of exter
mination issued by the Commsnder-
iu-Chief: “In the midst of this cx-
mtement we would commend the
earnest consideration of the senti
ment whieh heads this article. Be
fore the sword and brand are applied,
let ns look at the example we have
set before these untutored, nncliri*-
tian and uncivilised jeople." The
Advertiser then propounds these
questions:
Has the Government kept its
plighted faith to the Indians, to its
own oitiienf ? Has it not acted in
bad faith, with tronchorv and dissim
ulation ? Are there not those in our
own midst who nan bring evidence01
treachery und bud faith on the part
of the Government before which the
strategy of C'aptaiu Jack lose^gouie-
tliing of its horror. Are there not
those in this community who acoepted
the invitation of General Sherman,
alter the capture of Savannah, to
come forward and take the oath of
allegiance, under a solemn guarantee
that, if thev would do so, all of their
property should be restored to them,
saving and excepting slaves ? Was
not the guarantee approved by Presi
dent Linconi, and ibe Congress of
the D nited States then giving it the
sanation and authority of law?
In all artioie on the progress of the
Cuban revolution and the prospects
of tbe early sucuess of the Carlists,
together with the increased opposi

the Island, the Augusta Constitu
tioualisc thinks the time for govern
mental influence in the cause of free
Cuba, on the part of the United States,
is gone by, if it were at any period
advisable. It says there is no
—good reason wby this country

chase, ev.-n if Spain were willing,
and if the Cubans desired it Com
mercially, Uttba would he advanta
geous to this country as an inde
pendent republic. But there arc no
political reasons why it would lie a
desirable acquisition to this oouutry.
Referring to the popular demand
for the extermination of the Modocs,
the Chronicle und Sentinel says that
nothing is clearer or surer than that
the Cauoasian will never brook a
rival rebellious race on this conti
nent, no matter what their natural
rights may be. The tale of the lust
of the Mohicans has been written;
and that very soon will the lust of the
Moduce become tbe subject for the
pen of the novelist uud poet, and
challenge only tbe interest of archie-
logical research to illustrate the his
tory of the man of the Stone Age.

The Griffin Star, discussing the
same subject, has this to say:
It may be true that there are some
differences of opinion between Mr.

to be innocent until the contrary is
proven; consequently we think it

noticed in the Herald’s editorial in
reference to Mr. Hemphill is, that the

but the spirit in which the article
seems to nave been written, looks
very much that way. We have said
this much in justice to brother Hemp

benefit of the whole matter as soon as
we can get the facts.
The Griffin News has this to say
on the subject:
It is to be regretted that these ru
