How he Became Jadfr-A Piece of Un-
pwbtlttaed History.
From the Oolamboe bun.
Now (but the official whose name be ids
Ibis article occupies a space in the public
mind as large as it is unnimable, it mu;
interest the people ot Georgia to read a
bit of unpublished bister/ disclosing the
circumstances which placed him io the
high position he so unworthily occupies.
Every one remembers the chaos which
enveloped our State following the sur
render of the Confederate armies. Dur
ing these dark days of uncertainty and
dread many meeti ngs were held through
out the State by citizens known as Union
but honest men, to appoint del-gates to
proceed to Washington and secure order
and civil government from President
Johnson. One of the largest of thebe
meetings wia held at Ooinmbur, em
bracing representatives from a number
of count)* a. It was composed of good
citizens aud tax-payers. Men who wen
origins ly Union men and opposed to se
cesoion, but who did not forget .he ties
of kiuared, and were not false to the
claims of neighbors and friends.
Among the delegates appointed by the
Colombus convention *as Col. M., with
others, who called upon Mr. Johnson
aud were kindly received. The Piesi
dent, knowing of the representation at
Washington from Geor ia, requested
that the delegatee ah< ufci hold a meeting
and designate acceptable men who would
under take to bring aoout ord« r and se
cure peace to Georgia. Tho meeting
was held and Hon. Jamea Johnson sug
gested as Provisional Govercor. He was
accepted by the Columbus delegates, a-
* a fellow-townsman and a man oi
he was
talent aud integrity.
About this time the members j! tho
meeting present, with a show of au
thority, were disgusted to find them
selves outnumbered by a ring oi
Washington haugers-oo from Oeorgia,
led by “bland and childlike” Loob-
rane. One Bid ;eley or R'dlet, of Sa
vannah, was proposed as Uuited Stub's
Marshal. Who is this man ? asked Col.
M. Tnere ho sitB, wis the reply. Ques
tions duly put demonstrated that he wan
not a ci-izen of Georgia, and soon the
hug dropped him. Stone was then se
lected against the protest that no man of
anjp position oi that name lived in Savan
*iben Jno. Erskine was named to fill
the high position as Judge of the United
States District Court. Col. M , ever
on the alert in the interest of bis State,
demanded, who is Jno. Erskine? Mr.
Erskine ia immediately on your right, re
plied one of the ring. But who is ne ?
Asked th« vigilant deleg >te. I assure this
meeting, he added, that I know whereot
I speak and I unhesitatingly say that
iherads «oi a lawyer in Georgia of any
reputation whatever, named “Erskine.”
But the ring nad tne programme cut and
dried, and Jno. Erskine was thrust upon
the people of Georgia against the will ot
the delegates who were pre.entwitha
show of autnon y.

Two of our Atlanta cotemporaries, tlfo
Herald and Constitution have been for
someiime trying tarn tot ogtdo the other
in the sort of enterprise that characteri
zes quack doctors, consisting chiefly in
persistent blowing, flaming handbills, and
a sort ot impertinent intermeddling in
each others affairs. They make them
selves prominent in the same fashion that
a belligerent Uibtruiau at a Dounybrook
Fair forces quiet people to notice him,
by a free use of bis shilteliah and urgen
invPalions to the oystanders to tiead on
tile tail of his coat.
Saving up matter for a whole week,
aud bringing out quadruple sheets on
Sunday may serve to amuse our Atlanta
neighbors, but they are being eufied at
the expense of those who foot ink and
paper and composition bil>s. But then
we never read that the boy* in the fable
stopped flinging stones when expostulat
ed with by the frogs.
We presume the readers oan stand the
fun as long as the priutara. Let the show
go on.—Chattanooga Times.

v Wc copy the following extract from on
editorial iu the Columbv*s Sun in Vegoru
to the ywgftse and pwpoote trf thin
young aud vigorous railroad enterprise:
Kingsboio, the present termiuus ot
the road, is within a few hundred feet ol
the Mulbery, and distant from Hamilton
about lour milts. This embryo town
consists of two dt pot buildings, a well-
kept but oommodicua hotel, the Grimes
House, several small dwelliugs, and tbe
•tore of At. A Kaufmao, winch is one
of the numerous branches of tbe well-
known wholesale grooery house of J. A J.
Kaufman, of this oi*y. Tbe train rescue*
this point at about six o’clock p. m., and

ing, thus enabling Hamilton passeugers
to go and come with but little inconveu
ienoe.
A large force is now at work at Kiups-
boro, under the direitiou of Engineers
Harris a^d Billa* s, preparing the way
for the speedy erection of nearly out-
tbwusaud feet of treatlu and bridging
over and about the Mulberry. Mr. W
C. Cherry it the contractor for the trestle
work, and Maj >r Hamilton Wilkins con
structs the bridge. The timbers lor this
work are now beirg de ivered on the spot,
and in a few duys they will be put iu
place and readv for the sleepers. The
iron is also at Kings boro, f >r the exten
sion, and it is proposed to push the work
ahead with aa little delay as possible.
The structure over and around tne Mul
berry is to be of tbe best workmanship,
and wih prove a costly affair to the com
pany, yet they do n t hesitate to assume
tbe expense in order to secure perfro:
safely to their trains.
Beyond the Mulberry the road bed is
graded to Hamllton, as well as beyond
that poiut, and it will be but a small j*n>,
with the quantity of iron now on hand,
t j oomple e the road to that town m a
very short time. Within hatf a mile oi
Hamilton the track strikes the carriage
road and follows it into and through th«
place, that giving the citizens alithebeu

cated near the hotel, and within a stone’s
throw of the business houses. Already
