•• O AM OCA, TIC STMAOrASTMtU."
In reply to our neighbor of the
Onaatitatiou, in its article jcsterdsv
morning, under the above caption,
we bare to repeat that * we have no
quarrel its make with those of our
Democlttir friends who oonceived it
to he to.tka best interest of the coun
try, under the circninstances at the
time, to vote for Mr. Greeley; but
what we most desire is that they
should profit by the blnnders of the
peat and take warning from the latal
mult* of a Presidential campaign
conducted on a line of ia,se policy
which divided the Democra'ic party
and Mattered its forces, and came
very near deitroying its vitality.’'
What we say on this point is said
in no spirit of crimination. Onr so
licitude for Democratic success in the
Artnte is the prime motive that con
strains us to plesd for Democratic
harmony and unity on the right line
of principles, and to warn our friends
against the intrigues snu scheming*
•f political trimmers and traders who
would Radicalise the Democracy and
-aaorifioe public liberty in order to at
tain their nefarious ends. That the
large bnlk of the Democracy that
aupported Mr. Greeley did it consci
entiously we do not pretend to ques
tion, so far as it was a question of
choosing between ewlle; but that they
did so, believing that they were voting
fora strict maintenance of Demo-
* cratic .principle, we do not and can
not believe. It wai eeemingly foroed
upon them by "trusted leaders,”
whose designs were not ij much
Democratic as they were to promote
central government The “ rank and
file” of the party never dreamed of
the numiuation of Mr. Greeley, the
moet intense Abolitionist and Radi
cal in the country, until it was made
at Cincinnati, and then they did not
believe the nomination would be in
dorsed at Baltimore.
We moBt emphatically deny any
animadversion upon the party proper
in whatever of support from its rank
was given to Mr. Greeley. We con
demn the policy that ignored well-
grounded and long-olieiished princi
ples, the going outside of the purty
for its candidates, and the threatened
diaintogration of the party by so do
ing, and the fatal results following so
stupendous a pieoe of political folly 1
Aa to “ the destructive course of the
Straight element,” we have only to
reply that they showed better diacre
tiun in adhering to time-honored
principles, and refusing to make a
single step iu the direction of the so-
called “ progressive ideas of the day.”
Thev were faithful to the past record
of the party. But the writer who,
himself, voted for Mr. Greeley, upon
the grounds stated in our issue of
Tuesday, does not, and will not, pre
tend to say, that the Straights are
better Democrats than thousands who
voted for Mr. Greeley; but he does
contend that they aoted the wiser
part, though, perhaps, with no better
motivee than those who aoted differ
ently. And in *> contending, and
appealing to the party to avoid simi
lar blnnders in the future, the writer
doee so in no Pharisaical spirit, an
imputation he can only treat with si 1
fence.
.a- We hope onr neighbor will not at
tempt to (train the meaning of onr
artiole in its efforts to make it appear
that we claim Democratic fealty alone
for the Straights, when we do no
inch thing, and sternly repudiate
such pretension. Wo have set up no
mch claim, nor shall we do so. Men
of the beet and purest intentions

The Suva nn'ih Mews, in an article
on railroad monopolies, and the dis
cussion ou the muject by the press,
thinks that its centralising tenden
cies are too appareut and the result
entirely too doubtful, and that the
agitation, nevertheless, is ominons,
and it would be well for those who
have the management of railroads to
take some steps to prevent a series rf
contests which premises to be as dis
astrous as the foolish fend between
capital and labor. Concluding, the
News says:
The question involving the relation
of railroads to the people—to agricul
ture and commerce—is an extremely
delicate one and involves various in
terests. Carefully prepared laws by
competent State Legislature* might
do much to prevent odious discrimi
nations in the transportation of
freights, but the waiter is not one to

Referring to the murder of General
Oanbyby the Modocs, the Macon
Enterprise pronerly thinks no brave
or honorable man, of course, will ap
prove of the treachorous and cowardly
manner In which the man met his
death. The Enterprise as justly at
tributes the prime cause of such
trouble. It says:

lot of swindlers who accompany him
to the stations, and instead of paving
the cosh, they puy off in cheap
toggery—in beads, feathers aud Cin

Condemning the Indian policy of
the Federal Government with specia 1
reference to the murder oi General
'an by by the Modocs, the Chronicle
and Sentinel says that if the Indians
murdered the settlers of the border,
violated their wives, and carried their
children into captivity worse than

were sent to explain to them the sixth
commandment, and offer them arms

The Milledgevillc Union and Itc-

We might us well talk of dissolving

In regard to the Atlantic and Great

man thinks that if our people are
determined to continue tho present
policy ot depending upon the West

In conclusion, we repeat what hM

we may avoid errors in the future.
