The State taxes are being oohecied
rapidly, Tax resistance is breaking

advocated in this article,
orutio dogma (we still ding to old
ora'io dogmas) is, stand qy principles and
not men. Why is it not equally sound
Democratic doctrine to oppobe princi
ples and not men ? What is Graut bnt
the representative of \ party ? «Voold
his removal relieve ns at all ? The same
party would still De io power, aud the
came principles t e-upheld. Another mau
w mid be put in Grant’s place. He might
be a better or a worse man; it would mat
ter very little to us of the South or to the
Demoo. atio party of the conn try what
might be the character of the man in the
Presidential chair e » long as the Radical
party with its infamous, oppressive, anti-
republican ideas ruled and oppressed Ihe
land,
When the Radical party ia overthrown
and a constitutional government estab
lished in the place of the one we aie now
hying nnder, it will matter very little
wnat or who may be the maa who is
President of the country.
This leaving out of sighi principles
and great vital questions and lookin,
only to men, led t ie Pei
f ital Greeley folly
party into adopting gg j
form the most Radical ideas.
The Democracy should, therefore,
fight against the Radical party and the
measures of that party under which we
have b» n and are still so oppressed.
These are exactly the same measure
which Gree ey Radicalism sustained and
under which we would now be living
had Gre dey geen elected and his par y
placed iu power. And those wuo advo
cated the Greeley coalition should not
complain of Grant and his party for cs
rying out the very measures whioh th* y
advocated. Graut is simply executing
tbe reconstruction acts whioh a portion
of tbe Demooraoy said in their platform
last year should remain undisturbed, aud
which they pledged themselves nev^r
even to discuss or disturb again.
Now the only remedy is to strike
st the root of the evil. We most go be
yond Graut. If we wish good govern
ment; it we wish a restoration of tbe
people to their old-time liberty, we most
bght against Radicalis n in every foim,
aud never cease tbe straggle till we ob
tain a repeal of the reconstruction laws.
The President must execute the laws,
and if Democrats say those laws are fixed
upen us and must not be disturbed, they
should not complain of a President lor
xecutiug them. Greeley was pledged
to muiutain aud execute these very laws,
sod bis adherents pledged themselves to
support him and these very measures;
Graut is uoiug nothing more, nothing
less.
The country ia suffering from meas
ures, not men; let us war against those
measures. The people am groaning un
der unjust aud uucons'itutional laws; let
us struggle to free ourselves from those
laws. &}iate lights are ignored and civil
aud personal liberty destroyed in these
United Slates, not because Grant or any
body else is president, bnt beoause the
coontry is cow in the hands of a power
ful aud unscrupulous party whioh is en-
forciug laws repugnant to all Republican
aud Democratic ideas.
Oar oulv salvation, then, as a Demo
oratio, Federal Republic, is iu tue good
old Democratic dogma, “Measures and
not Men.
