Spuingfield, Macs., April 20.—Geo
Bliss, one of the oldest and beat known
citizens of Springfield, died last night in
his 80th year. He was several times a
member of the Legislature, being Presi
dent of the Senate in 1835 a> d Speaker
of the Honsv> in 1863, a member or the
Executive Council in 1848 and 1849, and
a Scott Presidential Elector in 1852. Mr.
Bliss was a lawyer by profession, but de
voted himself largely, especially during
the last half of his life, to railroad enter
prises. He was one of tne originators of
the Western (now Boston and Albany)
Railroad, of which he was General Agent
from 1836 to 1842, and subsequently for
three years i'resident. He was also one
of the originators of the Hartford aud
Springfield road, and' w<*s interested in
many other raiiroad Enterprises. From
t 1850 to 1852 he was President of the
Michigan Southern road, in 1853 and,
1854 President of the Chicago and idis-
siasippi, and again <rom 1853 till be re
tired from active business iu I860, Presi -
dent of the Michigan Southern. He was
ad ictive Director of the Chicago
And Rock Island Railroad in its early
history. He was a warm friend of all
local charities and public enterprises,
having been one of the strongest sup
porters of tbe City Library, and Hamp
den Park was laid out under his direc
tion. He was the father of (Jol. Georg
Bliss, Uuited States Attorney for tin
Southern District of New York.

Gov. Smith, of Georgia, sent me word

fonnd him to be a most genial aud cour
teous gentleman, with a faoe aud bear
ing that acnote great strength of oharao-

He ia strongly hoilt, of med.im
height, aboni 40 years of age, and re
minded me of General Garfield, of Ohio,
though Gov. Smith is not so large a mau.
He ia one of tbe ablest lawyers in tbe
State, and deserves all honor, lor he rose
from the anvil to bis uresent bigh posi
tion by sheer lore* and sterling ability.
He bails irom Columbus, Georgia, and
during the war commarded a regiui >ut
