Pettus, three milea from Washington, were burned on last Tuesday about four o’clock in tbe afternoon. Fire was ao- oidental. — Oapt. M. A. Knight committed suicide on thy 25th ult, in Bonham, Texas. 0«pt. Knight was formerly a resident of Elbert oounty, Ga., from where he removed to Texas, shortly after tbe close of tbe war. — Tbe German bark Anna, Pohst master, was cleared Thursday from Sa vannah for the above port by Knoop, Hanemann A Oo., with 2,552 bates up land ootton, weighing 1,197,127 pounds, and valued at $225,000. —The Baptist Convention of tbe State of Georgia assembled in tne Baptist Church in Rome on Wednesdaj. The delegates embrace many laienttd and distinguished divines, besides a nnmoer of lay delegates from all sections of tbe State. —A sail boat belonging to Monahan, Parry A Go., upset in the Savannah river near tbe barge offioe, and two men who were in her came very near beii g drowned, but managed through assis tance to rtaoh shore, hot were rather damp. —An axle of one of tbe oars oi tbe down freight train on tha Georgia Rail road immediately preceding tbe down night passenger train broke in two one mile above Berzelia, Thursday morning, causing the oar to let down ou tbe track, and a consequent obstruction to tbe passenger tram. — Front present indications more than an average crop of wheat will be real ized in Catooja and tbe adjooeut coun ties. The very severe and repeated frosts ol tbe winter, gave rise to the gen eral expression of opinion that the crop would be out short; to tbe great relief of all, however, toe staud is very fair, and tbe area sown is more than usaal. —Abram Brown, a highly colored oiti- zen, was before Magistrate Russell, of Savannah, tor undertaking tue tragic role of Cain, and shooting with a pistol at a friend and brother three, several times. No casualties, Abe being a la mentably poor marksman. He was knocked uowp and several wheels passed over one oi his feet, which ren dered amputation necessary. It ii be lieved the unfortuuate negro went to sleep while under the influence of liquor —A rumor that two citizens of War ren couutj were to fight a duel on Sun day last, created considerable excite ment in Warren ton on that day. We understand there was good foundation for the rumor as to the duel, but a* mis take as to the time, and that the chal lenge was given and promptly accepted. As immediate friends of the parties con cerned have failed to secure au awioible adjustment we suppose the "field” will be resorted to in a few days. — fn an effort to prevent tbe collision of "Gazelle” steamer and Hook and Ladder truck, near the corner of Broad and Mclotoah streets, Augusts, Mr. Newton Heggie bad one rib and his nose broken, and waa suffering considerable from bia injuries yesterday. Mr. Harper B. Gampoeli was also run over by the hose carriage of Vigilant, No. 8, the tongue of wbioh waa broken, and re ceived painful injuries, one of his arms being hurt, end his body considerably braised. —On last Friday morning two young bloods, D*vid Burnell and M. Myersou, met at the A A G. B. U. depot in Quit- men and had an altercation, which grew so spirited that the former 4 ‘ went for” the latter with a chair—which weapon woe rendered ineffective by the party of the second part g» tting out ot the way. As soon as possible they sur rounded and stopped the frightened an imal, disentangled the unfortunate be ing who proved to b<* Mr. 8. M. Good win who had been plowing in so si join ing field owned by Mr. Varner. Mr. Goodwin was dead and much mutilated. —In the United States Conn, in Charles ton, on Wednesday, in the matter of James P. Low and thtf Blue Ridge Rail road Company, against the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railroad Company, officers, agents and servants, it was or dered that an injunction issue to restrain the d* fendants from doing work upon any portion of th9 line of the said At lanta and Richmond Air Line Railroad, wbioh ia upon or within the right of way of the aaid Blue Ridge Railroad in Sontn Carolina; and it ia farther ordered, that the defenaants have leave to move for a dissolution of this injunction upon giv ing five days’ notion thereof, and still farther ordered, that a copy of thia order be served on Colonel J. ULBANINOI. — The Sultan is reported seriously ill. — Twenty thousand ooal miners in Leioeaahire, England, have struck. —There is a fine prospect of an abund ant fruit crop on the Mississippi ooast. — Ths trial of the Tiohborne claimant on the charge of perjury, is iu progress. —A dis[ atoh states that Ben Butler will oerteinly be the next Governor of Massa chusetts. — It is proposed to have in New Yoik a grand international billiard tourna ment, at the three ball carom, open to the world. —The farmers on the border of Hinds oounty, Misaisippi, adjacent to Big Black, oomplaiu of the loss of fat cattle that have been borrowed in a felonious man- — The shareholders of the Atlantio Caole Company, at an unofficial meet ing, adopted a resolution favoring a con solidation of companies and an amalga mation of their interests. — A mass meeting of Democrats to pro test against ths refusal of the British Government to recognize the bpanish Republic, is to be held in Trafalgar Square, London, on the 5th of May. — The motion on demnrrer in the Stokes case oame up Thursday in the Supreme Court of New York, and was argued at length. Tbe decision of the court is not expeoted before the !6th of May. — A London dispatch states that tbe body of Earl De La Wan was tound Thursday morning in the river Gann. His suicide waa the result of mental de pression, caused by the death of a lady friend. —An act loaning tha Ohiokasaw School Fnnd, whioh amounts to about $1,200,- 000, to tbe Mississippi valley and Ship Island railroad was passed by tbe Mis sissippi Legislature before its adjourn ment. Alabama Items. — Two prominent Radical politicians are having a fuss in the courts of Mont gomery. P. G. Clarke, of Perry, had R. H. Knox, County Solicitor of if ont- f ;omery, arrested on the oharge of pub isliing a libel, whioh consisted in the statement that Clarke baa oeen an inmate of the penitentiary in Calilornia. I he case was brought before Justice Ooiemau, who bound Knox over to next term of the city court iu the sum of $1,000. — Ou the petitiou of J. F. Dretsjr, deputy clerk, etc., Judge Woods of the United States Circuit (Jogrt, Mobile, has ordered that the olerk of the District Court of the Uuited States for the mid dle distriot of Alabama, and his deputy, be and they are hereby re quired to trans mit to this court, without unreasonable deluy, all tne original papers in all civil causes pending iu said distriot court, and acomplete transcript of all the doox ets, minutes, orders, judgments and decrees, in nuoh causes as the same ap pear on record in said dint not court. North Carolina luma. — The Raleigh News learns that there will be no Agricultural Fair at Goldsboro this year. — The fires in the woods in Columbus county are snid to have destroyed about one-third wf the turpentine lox^s in that county, besides doing a great deal of other damage. - Col. William R. Myers, of Charlotte, baa declined the appointment as Honora ry Commissioner to the Vienna Exposi tion recently tendered nim by Gov. Caldwell. Col. Thomas H. Brem, of the same place, has been appointed to fill tha vacaocy. — One of the most important cases to be tried before tbe Roncombe court is that of the State and N. W. Wooofin vs. Thomas D. Gutter, an indictment for Itbei. B. The oompany will operate in Rockbridge oonnty, in that ate. —Commodore James M. Watson, who died in San Franoisoo last Friday, was born in Virginia. Ha entered the navy in 1823, ana had the reputation of being on* 1 of the best officers in the naval ser vice. At the time of his death he light house inspector lor California and Oregon, and resided at Vallejo, Cal. —Daring the past twelve months $1,000,000 worth of bnildmg improve menta have been put upon lots in Rich mond, and the prospeot for thia year is even better than it was at any time last year. Bricklayers and other mechanics are in great demand, and to some extent building operations are retard d in con sequence of the insufficient number ob tainable. —The Baptists of this State last year resolved to raise $300,000 to endow Rich mond College, and so vigorously have they carried out their determination, the gentlemen having oharge of the enter prise will be able to report at tbe semi centennial celebration, to take place in May, that the amount baa been seonred. Tbe First Ohnroh in Richmond gave $25,000, the Second $12,000, and the Third $11,000, and there are others yet to make their subsoriotiona. 'T$sn$im!
