reminded by tie Northern press of
“bad spirit” ua the prrt of th j 8outh-

oratmat The Washington corre

In a recent apreoh, in the city of
Charleston, a Southern city, always
considered the stronghold of South
ern feeling, called the hot-bed of
secession. Gob. John B. Gordon, a
favorite ot Gen. Lee, and one of the
moet trotted and honored Con-
fed rate ohieftaini, spoke aa follows to
an assemblage of gentlemen, from
both sections ef the Union:
"IgiT* yon the karate dead of both
•rntfes who foaght for principle and
benkad their oonriotion with their liras,
lot both be duly honored.”
The oontrait is so distinct that
none can tail to draw a definite
conclusion aa ts the extent of
malignity that preraila among a cer
tain class of Northern people. It is
but repeated evidence of a hatred of
the Booth and her people, her fallen
heroes and her martyrs to what they
believed to be tie cause of liberty.
Numerous instances are upon record
where Southern women have laid
tender flowers upon the graves of
Federal soldiers, aa they paid this sad
but loving tribnte to the memory of
their own dead.
Howoo«ld a brave and magnani
mona people refase such a sacred
offioe to the dead, of those sleeping
enshrouded in the grey or the blue?
Cannot malignity subside over the
grave, and throw the mantle of
charity and foigiveness upon the
humble mounds of those who fought
bravelf ftfrdka right as they saw the
right? Ia factionalism so bitter that
it must lacerate sons to bleeding
that Only need time and the axer-
oiae of forbearance and forgiveness to
be healed f Ia national Iraternity
and national confidence to be
restored, and national prosperity to
be established and advancod, by
the nuwiaa and malignant coarse
of aucn as oonstitute the Grand
Army of the Republic ? Ia
there any bravery or exhibition of a
disposition to forget the post by auoh
orders.
Doe* not the oharge of "bad spirit”
upon the Southern people by the
North oome with bad grace in the
face of such an order? No! no!
no! The wouda of disaffection and
alienation engendered by the late
war are constantly being reopened by
jnat auoh manifestations of “bad
spirit” by large bodies or organisa
tions of Northern people who claim
to be UnioS'people, but are anything
else than in oh. They malign and
dishonor the dead to express hatred
and contempt for the living.
If we would expect to forget the
asperitlee engendered by the late war
on both aide* we should remember
that the dead of the grey and the
dead of the bine are no longer ene
mies, hut am resting in their grave*.
No true, manly heart would or could
object to plaoinga few flowers upon
the mounds that hide their remains
forever bom mortal view.
E7*The Semi-Centennial Anni
versary Convention of the Episaopa)
Churoh of Georgia, held last week at
Savannah, was quite largely at
tended. Th* opening sermon on the
“Antiquity of the Episcopal Church,”
was delivered by Bishop Stevens, of
Pennsylvania. The annual address
was ddivered by the Bishop of Geor
gia. Bishop Stevens of Pennsylvania,
Bishop Howe, of Soith Carolina, and
twenty-six ministers were also pres
ent*. L Fifteen ohurches were repre
sent^ Bishop Stevens presented a
resolution from the Pennsylvania
Diooeea, tendering oongratnlationa,
sympathy and hcsJtyco-operation.

That’s nothing. Editors are human,
like other folk* We have seen small
editors strapped in onr time, and
more axtmonttaan yet, we saw one
not long since with a brick in his
hat (hid fellows, these editors.

THK SALARY GKAD IB OHIO.
The feeling in Ohio on the Con-
gremional salary grab atam* still to
be on the increase, and will no doubt
enter largely into the aisenseiona
doling the ensuing campaign in that
State. One branch of the State Legis
lature pasted resolutions sometime
since censuring the members who
acoepted the pay, so meanly filched
from the Treasury.
It appears now, as we are advised,
that Senator Allan G. Thurman, a
leader of the Democracy in Ohio,
and one of the ablest men in Con
gress, said at the time that the
nefarious bill patted, that he would
not draw the amount coming to him,
but allow it to lapse into the Treas
ury a* a part of the unexpended
balances. This, it is now stated, will
not be the effect, in which event Mr.
Thurman will except his thereof the
plunder and immediately refund it
into the Treasury.
We make this statement with
pleasure on the authority of a friend
of the Honorable Senator, who is ad
vised at to the fact, and for the
reason tbst it is refreshing in these
times of corruption and barefaced
thievery, to know that even Ohio
bat one honest man in Congress.

The Univenity of Georgia is an
inatitntion which every Georgian
may feel proud. It is one that has
given to onr beloved old State the
greatest number of learned statesmen
and influential citizens. From her
halls have gone some of the most
eminent men of the lost half oentury
or more; and he who would educate
his son well, and at the same time
honor his State, should send him to
the State University.
As this is emphatically a State in
stitution, it is to be hoped the people
of Georgia will ever give it that lib
eral patronage it so well deserves by
reason of its thorough curriculum,
and the high standard of scholarship
necessary to graduation.
WILL or IIHISV JUSTICE CHASE.
The will of Chief Justice Chase,
filed and entered for record in the
office of Register of Wills for the Dis
trict of Oolbmbia, is dated Novem
ber 10th, 1870, and appoints Henry
D. Cook, sole executor. After pay
ing all jnat debt* the interest on six
thousand dollars at 7 per cent, is be
queathed to his niece, Jane Auld,
daring her life, and if her daughters
survive her, the prinoipal thereof to
be paid to them equally. Ten thou
sand dollars each to Dartmouth Col
lege and Wilberforce Institute, and
the amount dne him by his late
brother, Edward J. Chase, is remitted
to his widow. The residue of his
property he bequeaths to hia two
daughters, Mrs. Senator Spragne, of
Rhode Island, and Mrs. Hoyle of
New York. The real and personal
property of the deceased is estimated
at *260,000.
A.OTHEH MISISTBB VALLBN,
Rev. Robert 0. Smith, a faithful
Presbyterian minister, died at his
reiidcnoe in Vineville, as we learn
from the Macon Telegraph, on the
23d inst, aged 63 years. Up to the
time of hia illness, which was only
three weeks before his decease, his
labors were devoted to three vacant
churches in different parte of the
oonntry. For many years he was
identified with Oglethorpe College,
until it was .removed to Atlanta,
when he devoted his entire time in
preaching the GespeL He was a
