11 On the 30th of September vve fell in with a Frencfc
Ihip, who engaged us cl >fe for two hour* y and Maintained
a running fight for two hours and an half more, when (he
struck. She proved to be the i’Efpefahcc, from Cape
Francoia, bound to Boiirdeaux, a frigate belonging to the
King, but loaded by the merchant*, and havingonly a let
ter of marque, mounting 26 twelve pounder* on her main
deck, and 2 fix pounder, cm her quarter dock, with 173
men i She had 20 men killed, and 24 wounded. I think
it a justice due to the Captain to fay, that he defended hi*
(hip with great bravery. The Pearl had fix men killed and
ten wounded, among the former was firft Lieutenant
Foulke of the marines, and the latter Mr. Donbar under.
The very cool and determined behaviour of the officers and
(hip’* oompany merit* mymoft (incere acknowledgments.”

honour of informing yout Loniftitp, that tho American
jaioed the King'* Standard ; and 1 at the fame time” gave
your Lordship a circamftancial detail of the reafon* that
induced him to take thi* ft-p, as welLa* of the unfortu
nate failure of a plan, which 1 have the moft ianguine
hope*, if carried into execution, would have been produc
tive of the greatest good confcquence* to hi* Mijefty’* ser
vice, but which trmin*\ed moft fatally for Major Andre,
Adjutant General, who, being taken prifooer, w'a*
tried by a Board of Rebel General Officers, and Condemned
by their sentence to fuffer death ; which fenteoce wa* or
dered by the Rebel General Waihingtoa to be carriedrinto
execution upon thi* unhappy gentleman oa the ad instant.
I sincerely lament the melancholy fauof thi* officer, who
wa* a very valuable assistant to rue, and promised to be an
honour to hi* country, a well aa as ornament to hi* pro
feffion.
“ I had the hosour to transmit to your Lordfttip, ia my
difpitch m irked 104, a copy of the iaftruftion* I ptopofed
giving to M.-yor General Lefiie, whom I had appointed to
comruind the expedition to Chefapeak, in order that your
Lordlhip might be informed at to the principal otue£U of
it.
“ This expedition will certainly fill the firft favourable
wind* the troop* having been embarked;, for fome day*,
and every necelfiry arrangement made for that purpose.

From Toulon we have advice, that the Orphee armed
