Neiv-York, March 28. The rebels having lately taken
and carried away prisoners to. New-Jersey many of the ha
habi|ants of Staten iflaiid, after plundering their families,
‘it became necessary to convince them that the militia and
refugees on that iftand have it in their power to retaliate
when they please : A party, therefore, of militia and re
fugees, uftder the command of Lieut. Richard Seaman of
the militia, and Mr. Joseph Shotwell, a refugee, jnade an
ineurfion on the 20th inst. at night, several miles into the
country,in the town(hipofWoodbridge,broughtofftwo sub
alterns and 11 privates of the rebel militia, \frho acknow
ledged Uiat this party of Loyalists did not plunder any thing
from them- JEJut it may not be improper to inform them,
and they cannot h/at be ifenfible of a very different mode of
afting, ffiould -they still persist in plundering the inhabit
ants of that island.
On Monday evening Capt. Lipincot, with his company
cf a Undated Loyalists,.. returned from excursion into
New-Jersey, and brought in a float* loaded With tar, iron,
ond lufhber, whith he cut out of Egg Harbour, at Chef

the command of a Capt- Rilhop, the Loyalists g ive them a
volley, which wounded Biflnp and two of his horses, on
which the rebels fled with precipitation, three of them

S-A V ANN A H, May 17.
LORD Cornwallis and his army have again
been in motion for fame days, but his man
oeuvres are as impenetrable as his designs. A blow
is meditating which it is hoped will not only ut
terly difperfojthe finall remains of Green’s army,
Ibut also effedlualiy cut off the retreat of all the
draggling parties. His Lordship has given signal
proofs of his ability to clioofe his own ground and
time to fight the enemy.
here-was neither French r.br Spa •. JFi fleet ar
rived in the Indies about a month ago. ‘
Several gentleman have arrived here (irice our
la ft by land from Pensacola, which they left the
beginning of April, at which time the Spaniards
had not been able to effect ans thing of conle
quence towafds a reduction of that place ; their
army consisted of a niotley crew of about 300 c?
men, nnd was encamped three miles from the town,
where th£ Indians annoyed them greatly, by kill
ing the (entries and carrying off their horses; they
had loft about 300 man in different ficirmiflie?,
whilst our loss did not exceed 20; in an attack
upon the fort 2t the Cliffs they were repulsed, and
upwards of 1 50 of ihetp killed ; a veflel with Don
Galvez’s baggage had been taken and carried up
to the town through the Spanilh fleet, and fome
fuiall craft from New Orleans with provisions funk
by the (hot from our batteries; the garrison Were
lately reinforced with 300 Chottaw Indians * and
Gen. Campbell with his brave army were in the
highest spirits, and nowise apprehensive of Don
Galvez’s being able to compel them to surrender.
The rebels have lately murdered several persons
who have refuted to join them. The case of such
peifons is extremely hard, but if any joined them
by such violence they will probably a&ag.inlt
them when it comes to the trial, or not plead they
were forceddhould they be taken.
The (hip Crown Galley, Capt. Webb, from
this port for London, is taken by the rebels, and
carried into North Carolina.
It is said the fix American veflels lately taken by
the Roebuck, together with the Confederacy fri
gate, were all loaded with military stores; chefe
prizes therefore are of the g*eateft importance to
captors and losers.
Last Monday night, at 12 o’clock, two armed
rebel boats from the northward, having on board
76'jneo, and comi%uiHied by and Howfrtl,
bearded-ar.d took- pofleflion of the (flip
Capt. Wade, lying at the mouth of Great Oge
chee river, loading for the Weft Indies. They
said they had been well informed that the Captain
and all his men, except were absent from the
veflel, and refolved on seizing her, go
ing up with the tide without making use of kheir
oars. They had not gone to sea yesterday after
noon, but lay within OiLbaw bar with Mr. Saun
ders the pilot on board, whoifl they had also taken
in his boat on Monday last.
A report strongly prevailed in London that
Charleftown was retaken, but the fame day au.
thentick news arriving of the defeat of Gen. Gates,
many were taken in, and fome looked exceeding
black.—The dime aits and reports are occafiorally
made use of by the fame faction in England and
America. -
