On Saturday evening the 28th

were Handing into St. Lucia, in order to land their Tick,

being the fternmoft fliip repeated the figna!, and in a few
minutes the Parfleur anfwffrcd it, and immediately hove
out a signal for the whole fleet to tack and Hand to wind
ward. About fanfet they perceived 22 fail of the line and
two 50 gun ships lying to, and a number of frigates, trans
ports, and merchant /hips, amounting in all to near 200
fail, going into Port Royal, Martinique, clofc in with the
land. A little after fur.let a French Cutter bore down to
reconnoitic the English', but was chafed back again. A

the Etitith fleet renewed lh*,a'<!fion with ‘the- vaji and part

Raflel (Admiral Drake's fliip) had received 14 /hot be
tween wind and water, and fix feet ‘water in her hold,
when Admiral Hood ordered her to bear away fur St. Eu
flatius, where ihe arrived on Thursday lift,'and is flnee
refitted for fca, and on Saturday watered at Old Road 1 .
When the Rulfel left the fleet they were Handing for
Martinique, having tun 25 leagues S. W. from it; the.
French were confideraifty to leew wft, so 1 feversf of them
in a fhattcred condition. The Engliih fleet failed coiifiJcr-
than t,lJt of the enemy, and Admiral Hood, *
we are has intimated to Sir George Brydges
Rodney, by the Ruflel, that he meant to difput* their
paltagc into Martinique.
All the English ships went into the engagement with the
gteiteft alacrity.
Ycflcrday Admiral Rodney arrived here, who has dis
patched several frigates in quest of the two fleets, and as
soon as he receives intelligence where they are will im
mediately fail to join them with the Sandwich, Triumph,
4 and Ruflel. The Panther, of 64 guns, failed a few and iys
ago to join Admiral Hood. We hope that when tin- above
faid fliios join the squadron, and are headed by theit ve
nerable Commander Rodney, they will be umpired with
that old English courage which was formally'a terror to
France and a scourge to the House of Bourbon, (though
inferior in force) will teach their haughty Monarch, tint
he must not insult the Bririfh flic, and mull acEnowße
the seas to belong to Great B fitaln.” ”
Seventeen large ships are now in tire ofllng to (he north -
ward of this ilhnd, supposed to be Admiral Hood’s fleet.
