just. within the Capas of Delaware, afters Awt but.fmart
engagement, which ended in boarding her; a gallant de
fence was made, but fiie was obliged at length to surren
der j, the crew of the Surprize had been reduced to 3Q
T.dmfs, having previoufiy manned two prizes, and had 28
pri loners on board, taken out of a snow flag from Havana,
prize to the Fair American and Holker privateers of PhE
Luft'phu. The Surprize’* r:gging was much damaged,
but /he had only one mao wounded. The fthooner Ge
neral Arnold, Capt. Loughton, was in company, but did
Hot get down to them till poileflion had been taken of the
prize lhip. Two days before they chafed a (loop on /ho,re
from having Bo,opo dollars pn board, but night
coming on Capt. Ross deferred boarding of her till morn
ing, when he found they had got all their guns ashore,
and ere&ed a battery, which prevented any further enter
prize againfl: them ; they next day font three gentlemen
on board the schooner who were priftners in the sloop,
these gave information of the treasure. Capt Ross has
gained great credit by his cool and undaunted behaviour,
as well in the above afVi m’as Tii retaking the.afo.e menti
oned flag of tr JC3, which hid 160 Ihitifh troops, and
Rebels put on board to navigate herto Philadelphia. •

Philadelphia , June 30. By a person from Winc’nefter
In Virginia, whieh he left last Wcdncfday week, we hear
that a desperate knot of Tories had been difeovered. A
man, formerly a Heftian soldier, had been observed at
Martinlburg several times busy among the Saratoga priso
ners; upon flrnng suspicions of his conduct he was appre
hended, when, to avoid immediate death* he confefied,
after being twice ha r;e 1 up. A party were immediately
fen* to examine the person whom he said was to be their
Colonel, hie name this informant does not recollect, The
Colonel was taken priToner, and, upon feirching: his
houfc, they found a great number of guineas, Oopies of
romir.iffi >ns and other papers, by which it appeared that
Charles Lee, Esq. formerly a Continental General, was
to be their principal Commander. A detachment of the
militia light were immediately font ti Lee’s house,
who, upon their arrival, were informed that he had rode
out i a a great harry, and they went rn purfgit ofMdm.

journey by several pc-rfons from Virginia, who said it was
generally believed Lee had got fafe into the Briti/h lines,

Congress that his ill date of health will not permit him to

of another President, and the ballots being taken, the

Their names Abraham:and Billy, both country
born. Abraham is a flout fellow, about 5 feet 1 1
inches high, of a dark complexion, 35 yeats old,
formerly th* property cf Jonathan Bryan, Esq. has
relations at.hi- plantation ( Brampton) and has a wife
at Mr. DougVsls plan tat ToTTon Savannah river now
occupied by Mrs. Morel. Billy is a flinrfellow,
about the fame height, 27 years old, of a /ellowilh
Complexion, has a wife that lived at the fame
place, but has for these few weeks pad wrought in
Savannah, and lives at a Mr. Cade’s at Yamacraw,
her name is Doll. Both of the wenches are the
property of Mrs. Mcicl. It is thought that they
will be about Mr. Douglafs’s plantation or Mrs.
Cuthbert’s, where they have acquaintances. Two
guineas reward will be given for each of them, on
their being delivered to Mr. Fgtcr Henry Morel
in Savannah, or to th*fubfcriber at Beulie.

exchanged by (he Rebels, and permitted to embark

fore his departure he paid John Mullryne, Esq.
Meflas. Johnilon and Irvine, and several others;
and jifter his departure his attornies paid lfaac

different years of the Ulurpation here, the fub
feriber therefore gives notice, to all to whom he
(or his attornies on his account) p.nd Rebel money,

will leave it to any two gentleman of. cbaradler
(one to be chosen on eich fide) to determine what
sum the fuljfcriher ougnt to pay s on account of, and

received voluntary payments, in gold and silver
money, at the present valuation, from Jame* Ro

they made ; but one of them ben g of a contrary
opinion, (and declining to judge, in his own dale)
it was agreed to leave that nutter to arbitration ;
and the fubfenher if. defirmis ol making thi notice
general, ami propofmg the fame offer to all. This
advertisement is infei red to prevent any complaint
ofhardlhip; and it is earnestly desired that no per
son will confider any thing herein as conveying an
opinion in point of law, 01 prejudging aqy queltion
that may hereafter come on in eitner of the calcs

whom I immediately puifited, and after
coming up with him I was informed that arfinalL
party of white men were then before me going off
to /\ugolta with a negro fellow and a girl about 12
years old. About fixxfclock that day I came up
with them, exchanged fome (hot, and released the
negroes, who talk but little English, and cannot

SAVANNAH, September 6.
SOME people from the back country report,
that the beginning of last week one lame*
Tillet, with a few loyal militia and Indians, fell
in with a pa'ty of 20 Rebels, near Col. OatlceV
11 at ion on the Ceded Lands, when they killed 18
of them ; the other two escaped to their Colonel,
who with the few men left at that poll immediately
fled towards Augusta. • ■
‘Eh arid ay lall arrived here,..the schooner Swift,
Capt. Hunter, in seven days from New Provi
dence. He informs us, that on Sunday the sth of
August, the privateer schooner Lion, Capt. BelL
carried >n there a brigantine, Young, Mailer, from
Philadeipni', bound tp the Havana, with joo
barrels of flour; a If* aft hooper from North C>.
