INDIAN WAR.
A letter, received in this city
tieman at Detroit, (dated 24th of
June) dates that “the Sack Indians
aud Oiowas has sent in their chit s
to council at Malden. They are
fpreadiug the war belt in every di
rection —their object is war with
the Osages on the MilMippi. They
applied for th 6 afftltance of tiie
Hurons, who anfwet£ 1, that they
were in treaty of peace (made at
Grenville) with the U nited States;
that they had buried the hatchet,
and would not take it up again.
The Sacks and Oiowas replied,
Wc fliali then know how to treat
you when we cpiffe forward. ,, -~
The Osages, it is laid, will claim
the protection of Weft Louiliana ;
and it is believed that the United
States will be involved in the war.
The troops ought to be returned
to this place, and the fortifications
{lengthened. We are, indeed, in
a miierable situation for defence
the citadel in ashes, the fort defer
red, and only a few draggling sol
diers about the ship yards.
The letter, from Which the a
- intelligence was taken, con
tains a deferiprion of the • fufferfngs
to which the inhabitants of Detroit
have been reduced by the late eon

RALEIGH, (N.C.) JULY 29.
On Tuesday last, five prisoners
made their el’cape from Hiflfbo

Nathan Holtfclaw, and John Jtft

been convlfted at the last Federal
Court for this diftridt of forging or

Bank Notes, and Collins and
Holtfclaw held for trial at the next
term for like offences. Jcfter was
charged with horse Healing. A
reward of ipe dollars is offered by
the (heriff for each of the counter
feits, and twenty-five for the horse
stealer. It seems there are two
doors (an purer and an inner) to
the entrance of the goal. When
the goaler enters the firft door,
fame perfou always attends for fe
ctirity, to lock it after him before
he opens the fecund door. On the
goaler’g entrance on Tuesday eve

as usual ; but by fome means, the
inner door was open, and on the
goaler*s opening the . outer door,
the above prisoners all rulhed up
