The quJtion, novc to be de cided, is not whether a republican government is calculated merely to fee lire civil liberty, but. whether it has fhengtli, and energy, f’ufficient to maintain, by force, the rights ck honor of an independent nation. But tfie a 7 rters of our riglrs were not th> n denounced a* the advocates <d war, the iltflroyers of trace. No ! they were sages, patriots, her <es, then the objeds of a nation’s love, and confidence and hope, and now the objects of its gratitude and ad miration. But th./i we were an ti nned pec pie. Ikuty Ipirit. inordi nate ambition, infatiabie cupidity, had not then crofted the waves of the Atlantic. Engaged in a com mon and glorious cause, the people from Maine to Georgia, were friends and brethren. National in dependence was the ohjed, and, thanks be to God, the reward of that fraternal union. Let us be u nited noia, and soon we fluli con vince the enemies of America, and every foe, every rcviler of a repub lican government, that its energies may always be called out, to defend and to protect our country againit oppreflion, from whatever quarter it may come. Woe be to the world end to this nation, dpecially, if ex perience fiiall prove this opinion to be fali'e ! But this proof can never come. The charge above (fated, upon the character of our constitu tion, will inevitably produce its own refutation. The people of Ameri ca have aflerted, in the face of hea ven cc the world, that man is com petent to fdf government. In a little time, disregarding all minor confiiderations, they will unite for the purpose of fa sporting this allei tion.
