The Sports of the Turf.
Race week is at hand, and our city is alive with
Jockeys, Trainers, and all the etectera appertaining to
the Turf. Jockey caps have taken place of Kossuth
hats “Blue and Red’’jackets of fancy costumes, and
stable talk of bad Hungarian, worse Spanish, and indif
ferent French. In sober prose, we learn from the
officers of the Central Jockey Club, that the following
distinguished racers have already arrived, and will con
tend for the purses offered by their Club —viz: Col.
Campbell'* l Monte, Andy Rogers, Diamond and Sam ;
Col Harrison's Gold Pen, Nat Pope, Secession, and
Maid of Edgecombe: CoL Bealle’s Elizabeth McNary,
and Theta; Dr. Nisbet’s Kitty Hays and three others ;
M;,j. Jones’ Maringo, and Molly Jones ; Col. Lamar’s
Robert Bell, and Captain Hamilton’s stable of seven
superior nags. There is every prospect therefore of
£nod sport, and front the character and standing of the
officers and members of this Club under whose sole
control the Track is placed, the public may rely on
good order and fair play.
The Shortest Passage Yet. — The packet ship
Racer, Captain Steele, from New York, arrived at the
liar below Liverpool on the 25th ult, making the pas
sage in less than fourteen days. She was twelve days
from land to land, and was detained in the channel t n
hours by fog.

To the Mayor and Council of the City of Macon—
The undersigned would respectfully suggest to your
Honorable Body, a change in the terms proposed to
be paid for publishing the Proceedings of Council for
the present year, as specified in a Resolution, passed
on the 9tli Jan. \Y e would suggust that the same be
paid for by the square, on the same terms as last year,
believing that it would be alt igetlier more equitable and
satisfactory to both parties. By this arrangement, we
should receive compensation for whatever labor we
performed, and the city would not be subject to the
contingency of paying an amount, where it had not
received an equivalent.
We respectfully decline publishing the Proceedings
of Council, except on terms based oil the principle
above stated.
Very respectfully,
S. ROSE & CO.
Macon. Feb. 12, 1852. RAY it ROSS.
The Finance Committee to whom was ref rred tin- |
above petition, report that the amount proposed by
resolution of the Council Ibr the payment of punting
Proceedings of Council and other matter for the cur
rent year, they consider a full equivalent, and if the
proprietors of the Journal & Messenger and Telegraph
do not consider it so, and are unwilling to continue the
publishing, they recommend the payment of what they
lmve already published, ami the withdrawal of the j
proposition. L. JONES. )

The Commute on Public Property Report having
contracted with M. D. Barnes to take apart and clean
the escapement and dial wheels of the City Clock, also
to wind, oil and regulate the same one year from the
21st .January last for one hundred dollars.
Preamble and Resolution by Aid. Jones :
The increasing dissatisfaction of owners of lots, bor
dering on the lines of Railroad running through the
city, at the delay of the several companies to make |
suitable crossings to'tlie streets in conformity with their ,
c ntract, renders it necessary that the city authorities
should act at once, and with promptitude in the matter.
Be it therefore Resolved, Tiint the Mayor notify i
fnid companies to make crossings wherever he may
think they are required, within a specified time, and in
ease of refusal to take such measures as will compel J
compliance. Adopted.
On motion of Aid. Hardaway :
Resolved, That the l’ump Committee be authorized i
t > have a well dug and a pump erected in the same be- (
•t'veen Mr. Burns and the op|>osite corner on wharf
street. Passed.
The Committee on Public Property t> whom wa
referred tlie petition of Berry Rodgers, Esq, have ex
amined the location selected by him for a Butcher Pen,
which they find to be entirely remote from dwelling
houses, in a retired portion of the city reserve, whore
•there could be no possibility of its becoming objection
able or offensive to any one, and for these reasons,
wouhl respectfully recommend the Council to grant the
frayer of the petitioner.
