Yankee Sarah-Yade.
BY SAMUEL SLOCUM, OF GOSLIX RUM.
I’m sitting on the stile, Maty,
Sitting on the utile,
But the bull dog in the front yard
Keeps barking all the while;
Why don't you tell your pa, Mary,
Or Joha. If he’s about.
To ask old Sammy Slocum in,
And make the dog get cout ?
Notr. I’m sitting on the fence, Mary,
Before the kitchen door,
But the pesky ugly bull dog
Barks louder than before:
And I thought I saw * shadow. Mary,
A shadow sEm ud tall,
All arms and legs, like Reuben Brown,
Against the white-washed wall.
If that is Reuben’a shadow, Mary,
If that was Reuben’s shade,
’Twill bring the ’spepsy back on u>e,
I'm very much afraid.
Oh, why this cruel treatment,
Why keep me in suspense.
Why don’t you make the dog g' l *° u
And let me off the fence?
I've got a keow and call- Mary,
The calf is three weeks old,
A score of pretty sheep, too,
As ever fed on fold;
And daddy told me yesterday,
When Dapple had a colt.
He'd let me have it, certain, sure, —
Ain’t that Reub Brown a dolt.
And mammy's knitting stockings, now,
To buy a cotton web.
One half the sheets are to be mino,
And half for sister Deb;
And mammy says whichever one
First brii gi a partner hum,
Shell have the punkin blossom quilt,—
Say, Mary, wont you come ?
Gee willkins! you'd ought to see
The rooster and the hen,
That Undo Peleg Sbakleford
Sent me by cousin Ben :
I guess ho wakes the folks around
When be gins out to crow;
If he was here to blow his horn,
He’d bring you ont, I know.
But. Mary, if you won’t have me,
And will have Mr. Brown,
I guees as how there’s other gals
That’s wide awake in town :
But one thing you had ought to know,
Before I turn my back,
That is, that Prudence Patlingale,
Gin your Reub Brown the sack.

beauty oe vottn.
One afternoon, at court, I was standing
between two intimate acquaintances of mint
—an old nobleman and a middle-aged lady
of rank—when tlie former remarked to the
latter that he thought acertain young lady near
us wad uncommonly beautiful The middle
aged lady replied, “I cannot see any partic
ular beauty in her.’’ “Ah. madam,'’ he re
joined, to us old men, youth always appears
beautiful!” (A speech with which Words
worth, when I repeated to him, was great
ly itruck.) The iact is, till we are about to
leave the word, we do not perceive how
much it contains to excite our interest and
admiration: the suuset appears to me far
lcmlier now than they were in other years:
and the bee upon the flower is an object of
curiosity to me, which it was notin my ear
ly days.
HORNE TOOK,
When at school, was aked by the boys,
‘•wl at his his father was?” Tooke answer
ed, “A Turkey merchant.” (He was a
poulterer.) “You and I have reversed the na
tural course of things: you have risen by
your gravity—l have sunk by my levity.”
To Judge Ashurt’s remark, that the law
was open to all, both to the rich and the
poor, Tooke replied, “So is the London Tav

He said that Hume wrote his history, as
witches say their prayers—backwards.
CURRAN.
I oneed dined with Curran in the public
room of the chief inn at Greenwich, when
he talked a great deal, and, as usual, with
considerable exaggeration. Speaking of
something which he would not do on any
inducemeuthe exclaimed vehemently, “I had
rather be hanged on twenty gibbits.”
“Don’t you think, sir, that one would be
enough for you?” said a girl, a stranger who
was sitting at the table next us. I wish
you could have seen Curran’s lace. He was
absolutely confounded—struck dumb.
GRATTANS UNCLE, DEAN MABLEV,
Had a good deal of the humor of Swift
Once, when the footman was out of the way,
he ordered the coachman to fetch some wa

objected, that hie business was to drive not
to run on errand*. “Well then,” said Mar
ley, “bring out the coach and four, set the
pitcher inside, and drive to the well.’ A
service which was several times repeated,
to the great amusement of the vdlage.
LORD ELLENBOROUCH

A Colony of Canaries. —A friend of mine
residing not more than some sixteen miles
from London, has at the present time a whole
colony of canaries living and breeding in the
open air. They arc free as the air they
breathe, unrestricted in their flight, thor
oughly domesticated in their habit?, and
tamo as any heart could desiie them to be.
I will now describe the spot where this fai
ry bird-land lies concealed from the prying
eye of the public. I have seen it often and
revelled in the site quite * f 3i y leisure.—-
On entering the pictures*! *■- mansion the eye
is arrested by an extensive and charming
view from the window. * Seated, or rather
embossed in its own ground*, from the win
dows downward?, there is a verdant lawn,
extern ling by a gradual slope to the margin
of a large open park—there being no mter
niption to an almost unbounded prospect. —
Immediately contiguous to the dwelling
house is an ample shrubberry, beautifully
laid ont, and comprising tress and shrubsofall
kinds. Here the birds nest and hold their
conferences. This shrubbery extends a'l
round the house.
To the left, immediately beyond the flower
garden, and in a shady corner, is a sheet of
water overarched by trees. Here the cattle
resort to drink; here, too, the birds assem
ble to enjoy the cool breezes, when the bla
zing sun banishes them from the park and
open fields. Such is the spot where dwells
this happy family of canaries. Here they
live, day and uight, in perfect liberty; here
they build their nest'; here they lay their
egg3 and rear their young ; here they play
—he-e they sing. Sometime? a nest is found
is in a wistaria immediately beneath a win
dow.” Look at it if you will; pass your fin
ger over the back of the sitting mother; it
is no offence. When the young are hatch
ed, and three dsy? old. look at them, also,
if you will; the parent is pleased, and her
offspring arc fearless. So among all the trees
and all the bushes. T speak from actual ex
perience. It is a most amiable sight to be
hold these pretty creatures, of all hues and
colors, feeding their young. * And how the
papas make the welkin ring with their floods
of melody!
Here let me remark, that the musical pow
ers of the canary, heard in an open park or
shrubbery, are as novel as they are beauti
ful When thus “free” he is heard to per
fection. Birds in confinement are under
restraint. They sing it is true, but their
song is monotonous. It lacks the energy
aud spirit of a roving bard. These birds are
free of the house; they eat at table, fly on
trie young ladies’ shoulders, and make them
selves quite “at home” with the household.
Moreover their food, in choice variety, is pla
ced for them in a very large cage on the
lawn, which they enter by certain small
openings. Would you detain them, a slight
invisible cord, skilfully touched by a gentle
hand, bars every point of egress. They are
your prisoners! For a •accession of year?
has this colony thrived ! and many a treat j
have had while contemplating what may be
accomplished by only a little tact and a kind
ly disposition.—[Wm. Kidd.
For llc3Baxos and Wives.— ln the flush
i and brilliancy of early married love, the first
faint impressions of the future husband and
wife commence. As lovers, their separate
dispositions were in a state of pleasant antag
onism. as a wedded pair, they are presum
ed to be amalgamated, and form an entirety
which recognizes vnutu&l pleasure, mutual
interest, advantages and concessions, as the
basis of their mutual happiness. The hus
band even in the dawn of his marital bliss.
&ould begin to create in his wife’s mind
those favorable sensations which are the
precursors of those more solid ideas which
bind woman to man—by that strong, inv s
ible intercommunion of soul which only
death can interrupt. Tlrs obligation is
equally imperative on the wife,
i In the hey-day of her husband's love,
while his heart beats responsive to her ev
ety wish and his mind is a fair tablet on
which none but Summer thoughts are en
graved, she should begin the study of his
character, so that when the necessity arises
may be able to accommodate her own
more plastic one to it, without effort or incon
venience. Indeed, with both of them this
should early be an object of anxiety, so that
gradually there should grow up between
them a conciliatory predisposition of tone
aid manner which, when broughtin to requis
itlon, would sppear more like a habit than a
daty. Both husband and wife object to any
thing looks like compulsion; they each turn
away from even a duty, when clothed in re
filling garments; and from this it will be
apparent how necessary it is that the soil of
tlieir tempers, ami peculiar mental and moral
i fiosyncrcies. should as early as practica
ble be sown only with these seeds which in
slier years will yield the sweet rmclling
flowers that shed such delicious perfume
over hallowed aud long tried wedded life.
