|4P” A Quaker’s admonition to a man
who waa pouring forth a volley of ill lan
guage to him was : “Hare care, friend,
thou mayest run thy face against my fist.
jy Before marriage, the mania very
much struck with the woman, and after
wards tfle woman is very much struck by
the man. It is a striking business through
out *
iW- At a marriage ceremony, which is
of the most value, the bride or the bride
groom ? The bridegroom ; for the bride is
given away, and the bridegroom is 3old.
Write your name by kindness, love,
and mercy on the hearts of the people you
come in contact with, year by year, and you
will never be forgotton.
ty An article in an exchange paper, an
nouncing the decease of a person says:
“His remains were committed to that bourne
whence no traveler returns, accompanied by
his friends.”
Goethe said that “man was the only
object that properly interests mAn -_ We
guess the old fellow was mistaken. Woman
is a much more interesting object than man,
anyhow.
A Doctor at Scattycook, Me., says
that is generally caused by .Hem, some
times by catar. Occasionally it is accompa
nied by kick up* or direct. Singing sams and
hims, are a wholesome exercise for it, and
eating punkin pies good food.
jy Mrs. Gage, in a speech at the recent
feminine convention, told the story of wo
man, who, having secured a second spouse
that “nursed the baby,” &c., very accom
modatingly averred that “a husband was the
next best thing about a house to the cook
ing stove.”
jy The flowers fade, the heart withers,
TP*n grows old and dies ; but time writes
no wrinkles on the brow of eternity.
ty Drop by drop falls into the clear well
spring of youth the bitter waters of expe
rience, and there is no filterer this side of
the grave that can restore the old purity.
God has written on the flowers that
sweeten the air, upon the breeze that rocks
the flower* upon the stem —upon the rain
drops that refresh the sprig of moss that lifts
its head in the desert—upon its deep cham
bers—upon every pencilled sheet that sleeps
in the caverns of the deep, no less than up
on the mighty sun that warms and cheers
millions of creatures which live in its light—
upon all his works he has written —“No
one liveth for himself.”
jy The editor of a country paper, hav
ing been taken to task by a female corres
pondent for noticing Dr. Hall's receipe to
prevent ladies from taking cold—viz : “to
keep the mouth shut"—hits back as follows
“We never could make ourselves popular
with old maids. Do what we would —
squeeze ’em behind the door, which they
dearly love, flatter ’em on the sofa—dance
with ’em at parties—take ’em to sleigh rides
and treat ’em to ice cream, oysters, and ‘kis
ses’ —in short, attend ever so gallantly to all
their wants save making them a direct offer
—and the moment our back was turned they
would turn to and show their teeth (false
ones, of course.) Well ‘hope deferred ma

Wife Taming.—The Boston Gazette an
nounces Mr. Paul Pretty man as a teacher of
the art of wife-taming, at the low price of
S6O per lesson. Here are some of his certif
icates :
This is to certify that Mr. Paul Prettyman
has succeeded in subduing my wife. He took
her when in her most restless condition, and
in one hour she was cooking a beaf steak
with the p'acidity of an angel.
Jas. P. Horner.
New York. May 8, 1858.
Mr. Prettyman has full liberty to refer to
me. His art I consider the great desiderat
um of married life. He quieted Mrs. Simp
kins, who was always ngly in double harness
cod accomplished wonders. Not a shirt but
ton has been missing since the date of this
trial P. Simpkins.
Newark, N. J.
gy There are some sad sights in this
world—a city saeked and burnt—a battle
field after a great slaughter—a London in
the midst of the plague —a ship burning at
sea—a family pining in starvation —a jug of
molasses wrecked upon the pavement —a
pair of irrecoverably damaged pantaloons —
but the saddest to us of all is an old bache
lor, stolidly walking towards his end, his
great duties undone, his shirt buttons off,
bis stockings out at the tees, and no body to
leave his money to. Were we such a man,
the mild reproving eyes of a widow or a
maiden lady would drive us mad. But there
is frill hope. Uglier and older men than ai>y
of our friends have married beautiful wivee,
who trained them admirably, and spent their
money elegantly. —Springfield Republican.
Bachelors! read the above, weep for the
past and resolve to lead abetter life hereaf

How to Speak in Public.—When you
mount the stand be puzzled where to put
your hat. Look round at though you were
quite cool and collected, and suddenly put
your hat on the floor. Turn to the audience,
pass your fingers lightly and gracefully
through the hair, and say, “Fellow citizens,”
attend your right hand, put your left on
your vest, on which ever ride in your pri
vate opinion your heart lies, swell out your
chest as though all the goddesses of liberty
in the world had left their respective coun
tries, and had taken board and lodging in
your expansive bosom, and were now strug
gling to find their way out. Repress their
generous efforts for a moment and then burst
right out, leading off with a brief eulogy on
the American eagle, ihe effect will be tre
mendous.
Mvsmcitoes. —The Memphis Ledger says.
“With the subsidence of the waters on the
Arkansas shore, musquitoes are becoming so
thick that the sun sets fifteen minutes too
•oon, its rays being obscured by the swarm
ing insects, as they were by the clouds of ar
rows at the battle ofPharsalia. A man can
stand in Hopefield, and with his stick write
his name in the murky doud. A citizen of
the Swamp tells us that he saw a huge mos
quito sharpening his bill with a tomahawk,
and Charles Gillia 9ays he was taking a quiet
snooze in Hopefield on Sunday, when one
perforated the skin on his left heel upwards
of three inches, and then broke his neck in
the effort to get loose.’’
