Fact.
Mis? Q. is ore <>l the b. st of women;
Mi s Q. is al-o ve ry pretty, mi l is aware
of thfe” fatt, as every pretty woman al
ways is cognizant of her own beauty.—
And Miss Q., pi-.-. -essing sufiiciei t means
to indulge ;< taste for fii e dresses, is usu
ally arrayed in the lerg'h and breadth
of the fashion. Miss Q. is a S mday
schocd teacher and delights to ir -truct
the young in religious duties, and lead
them in the way in which they should
walk. It would puzzle her to say which
she would rathv rgi , c up—her fintndress
es or her Sunday School class.
A few Sundays ago Miss Q, started
for Sunday School, a little late, and, of
course, walked rapidly, and paid little
attention to anything she met or passed.
She was thinking all the time of her Sun
day School class, and hoping rhe wasn’t
too late. When she reached the school
room, the opening'prayer was over, an
the clas es ready for their tea* hers. Si
went at one.; to her children, who
like little birds in a nest,'awaiting lie
spiritual nourishment which their- pi<>
tector was to bring to them. With i
mouths ail agape and ears open* and, they
longed for :tti o; pnrtftnlty to answer he r
questions. She was teaching them the
Catechism, and illustrating the meaning
of its questions and answers. This day
they were to study the third question—
“ What did your Spot sors then for
you?- ‘ —and its answer—-“ They did
pron ise and vow thr, e things in my
name. I'm-L, that 1 shor.Ll renounce the
devil and ail. his works, the pomps and j
vanities of this wicked world, and ail tlie
sin- and !u-ts of the fle.-h ; secondly, ih it ‘’
1 should believe all the articles of the |
Christian Faith ;ad thirdly, th tI ‘
should keep God’s holy will and Com
mandments, and walk in the same all the
days of my life.”
Miss Q. asked what the works of the
devil meant, and the children answered,
mentioning many deeds and states of
mind to which this phrase applied.
“ And wh ;t, children, is meant by the >
pomp and vanity of this wicked world?”
“Mother says,” replied one, “tl.-.t
they mean those things that folks do f>r ;
show and get proud of, and yet don’t!
amount to nothing.”-
“Well, that’s a good definition of,
vanity. Something that appe.rs 1: rge
and grand, and vet is *tno ue. Now, 1
children, sup*-ose you shou 1 see wlot ■
looked like, a great house, that was ; 11
painted on the outside and looked grand
and line; and suppose you should go in
side and sec that there was only one
person to live in this whole house, and
that was about ten times as large as he
needed, what should you say the h"U-<
was built for ? ”
“ Vanity ! ” was the unisonous re
sponse.
“ And now what’s Pomp ?’’
Imagine Miss Q.’s horror and the
childien’s amazement, when to the word
“ Pomp ” there was heard a good hearty
“ Bow-wow-wow ! ’ A whine succeeded
to the hark, and from under Mis Q.’s
dress jumped out “ Pomp,” a beautiful
King Charles Spaniel, which was a de
served favorite with the Q.’s.
And th--n the trilth flashed upon her.
Beneath her ample Cr*n*l*ne she had
brought Pomp to Sunday School! We
snare our readers the recital of Miss
Q.’s blushes, the giggling of the child
ren, and the queer looks of the other
teachers. Suffice it to say, that 1 li>s Q.
was so struck by this singular illustra
tion of “the Pomp and vanity of this
wicked world” —that, like :* sensible
woman, she has abandoned hoops.
