hot day. At the breakfast ‘able, Mrs.

chickens and eggs.
“But, Mrs. Grant,” said 1. “how can
we go on hor-'cbuck ? You know Col.

“ W ell,” replied Mpi. Grant, chuck

Now I must confess 1 felt a little du

Mrs. Gi ut ordered bumbo to saddle the

Mrs. G. that I felt cold, and that I had

judging from their backward g-ances,
full of nmcUhif, and their chuckling.—
■Soon after, wc reached the main road,
where my three companions struck into
a canter. I knew nothing of the road,
and had a desperate dread of being left
alone in those woods—the resort of run
away negroes —where I blight get Tost,
for I never could understand a Southern
country-road ; sol must keep With them
at all hazards. By this time my chill
had passed, and its awful consequent fe
ver had commenced. The burning Au
gust sun, too, was pouring its rays down
upon my devoted head. r lhat mules
gail was like that of n dromedary’s, and
hard to hold, to that decree that my
anas were strained with tub exertion. —
Mv head ached almost to bursting. 1
felt hot, wild and sick. However, 1 fol
lowed after my mischievous tormentors,
the male trotting like mad, and as soon
its I got within hailing distance I called:
Oh ! Mrs. Grant —(bump ! bump !) —
Lena! “(bump!) and stop! I caul iid >
so fast! (bump!) This awful mule
(bump! bump!) will be the (bump!)
death of me ! (bump ! bump ! ad infini
tum !) Oh, mercy ! I’m so sic!-:! ”
Mocking laughter alone answered my
touching appeal, and I rode faster and
faster, till I thought 1 should fall from
that detestable brute’s back. W ild vis
ions glanced through my brain, and I felt
as if I was possessed of a demon —or,
riding one ! In this style, and in a hall
delirious state, I rode for sciuo three or
four miles further. In vain did i beseech
S the trio to stop. They had no idea I
J suffered so much, and half angry at their
1 tiv ■chief, and half reckless with fever, I
j ut length gave up the idea of trying to
| convince them I was really sick, aeter
! mined to keep on the mule if I could,
hill if I must, but at all events to take
the chances, philosophically.
At length we arrived at the bed of the
Kewaunee, a small creek, running through
low, swampy ground. The water was
now nearly dried up, but for several
yards there was mud, which looked as if
it might be pretty deep.
Lena's pony, with her active feet, and
her mistress’s light weight, passed over
without difficulty. Hannah also, though
more slowly, made the muddy passage
safely. 1 lingered behind.
“Now, girls,” said Mrs. Grant, “that
place looks suspicious, and, fat as I am,
I'm atlaiikof bogging; but l shall, beg- i
ging you to excuse me, ride ‘ man sash j
ion: ” Now Mrs. Grant wore, summer .
and ‘winter—(l suppose you will be i
shocked, fastidious reader,) —but she did j
wear red flannel drawers, made some- ■
what after the manner of a gentleman’s j
: unmentionables, and when she drew her ,
right leg over the mule, and braced her- j
self in the saddle, she presented such a i
truly remarkable and unique appearance, 1
that, sick as I felt, 1 joined Lena and
Hannah in a scream of laughter.
Just behind us there was a short turn
in the road, which hid the view, but 1 i
heard the s >und of a horse’s feet, and in !
a moment a “Ilillo!” of the most per
fect astonishment I ever listened to.
1 looked around, and at my side stood
a fine horse, whose rider was a remark
ably good-looking young man, whose
eyes were unnaturally large with won
der and mischief. 1 looked again at Mrs.
Grant. She cast a glance over her shoul
der, blushed scarlet, and gave her shirts,
including her hoop, a sudden flirt, throw
ing them over the mule, thereby nearly
covering him, except his long, rat-like
tail, his ears and legs, giving him the
appearance of having a very large bell,
or open umbrella, on his back, below
which, on either side, could be scon two
very- robust calves enveloped in red
flap riel, and below those two feet a trifle
smaller than a valise, in the stirrups.
M rs. Grant whipped the mule, and
said, “Gp-ic®, Bock!” but Rock was
pleased with his position, or /*o. b / he
was stubborn ; at all events he did not
• “go on, ’ but, regardless of Mrs. Grant’s

you seemed a child; but your face once

presented this good-looking, complimen

and said, “ Excuse me, Miss Vernon, but
allow me to feel your pulse. I think you
are sick.” I was. indeed, very sick. I
felt every moment as if 1 should fall to
the ground., ‘-Yes,” he continued, “you
have a very high fever; but, fortunate
ly, it is but a short distance to Mr.
j Smith’s house.”
Wc were now joined by Mrs. Grant
and her black attendant, and we rode
slowly to Mr. Smith’s. 1 have an indis
tinct impression of being assisted from
that mule by Dr. Greene, who half sup
-1 ported me up the steps of a clean, com
fortable log-house, of hearing the voice
of a strange lady, of being led to a bed
room, and of being helped on to a bed.
For two days after that all was delirium.
Strange faces moved before my eyes;
strange voices sounded in my ears, and
visions of mules in red breeches, pretty
girls and young men dancing hornpipes
in mud-holes, fat ladies cramming mud
ihto negroes’ mouths, ar.d a variety of
such crazy nonsense, induced by lever,
racked my brain ; but on the third day
1 awoke to consciousness, and found my
self in a small shed-room, (which to the
1 uninitiated 1 will explain to be a small
room built from the main house, extend
