Saving Money
The Lavonia Times, in a short edi¬
torial paragraph, says:
“Savings deposits at 893 savings
banks show an increase of over
$500,000,000 in a year. It is good to
know that our country, with the
greatest producers and the greatest
spenders, is increasing its savings
deposits.”
The marked growth of the savings
banks accounts is one of the most j
helpful and encouraging signs of the .
times in America. As long as the sav¬
ings bank prospers, we may rest as¬
sured that all of us are not spending
all we make. When we can find some
money to put aside after we have
met our routine obligations, we are
| i doing pretty well. While Editor Bur
ton refers in his paragraph to the
savings banks of the country gener
ally, it is good to know that Georgia
is not falling behind in this respect.|
T. R. Bennett, Superintendent of
the State Banking Department, has j
recently issued some figures show-:
ing that at the close of business in
1924 the people of Georgia controlled
assets in state banks aggregating
practically 8282,000,000, and those in
j national banks a little more than the
$205,000,000. At the same time ■
| deposits in both the state little and less na
] tional banks amounted to a
than $353,000,000. We do not know
j how much of this is in savings banks,
but we imagine that a great deal of
it is. Mr. Bennett concludes that
Georgia's banking and financial situ¬
ation is much better now than it was
a year ago. All of us will agree with
him in this. Eighteen banks were j
chartered last year in Georgia and
four increased their capital stock,
giving the state 559 state banks with
the opening of the present year, with
45 branches. I
The saving habit is one that grows
on a person if it is given the least
encouragement. Many people learn to
j save money in the cities in Georgia
I through the institution of Christmas
i savings funds by the banks. These
! brought home to those who built up
J a nest egg in something this way the importance regularly
of putting away
and reaping the benefit at the end of
the year. Bankers tell us that savings
accumulated in this way are not all;
recklessly spent at the end of the
year and that many a savings bank !
nest egg has been laid through the
operation of the Christmas club.
Just where all this added wealth
I in the savings banks may be a sub -1
jeet for debate. There are some who
believe it has been caused by the
prohibition law and others by the
preaching of the virtue of thrift and
the establishment of savings banks
